Jan. 15, 2009 - Radio Shack "what it's like"

Here is an entry about all the weird things that happen at Radio Shack (where I work). This may cure you of any desire to work retail!!!! LOL  It is really not that bad. I really enjoy it. But, to borrow a line from an old TV show, "you meet some pretty weird people in this business." The stories of today are still fresh in my head although today was not that unusual here are the highlights. I walked in the store at 8:59 and I see one of my co-workers across the room. His back was turned and I saw out of the corner of my eye MONSTER GLASSES!!! You know like what the clowns wear to look silly. I thought he was just playing a joke on me which is not so unusual. The other day he said "I bought you a truck." My heart starts pounding. "Wow" I said to myself "this guy really does make a lot of money here" He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of keys, placed them on the counter, and reached in his pocket again and pulled out a match box truck and handed it to me. You see why, now, I would not be surprised that this dude would try to play some kind of a joke or something so I played along. Well...... It was not a joke. Those were his glasses. But I am starting to get use to them now. Today (the day I penned this post not the day it was posted) I sold a 40" TV, laptop, and a T-mobile family plan 2YC in a 3 hour shift!! That does not happen often.

Today my co-worker, (this is a different one not the one with the really big glasses) walked in carrying a dying poinsettia. I asked him "is that a poinsettia". "Yep" he said and continued to place the plant on the counter. "Those taste good" I said jokingly of course, but by the tone of my voice he did not know this. He paused in mid stride holding the highly poisonous plant an inch off the counter. He moved only his head to look at me..... "Oh," he said "that explains a lot." Ouch!! He was joking of course. I think. But we all laughed hard. This happened along time ago. One time this guy came into our store and was looking for a Bluetooth mouse for his phone. (there is no such thing) there are Bluetooth mice and keyboards for laptops. Nothing for a phone. As my co-worker was trying to explained this to him I was congratulating myself because I was not the one that had to deal with this customer. And all of a sudden this guy said "Shhhhhh!!!!!!" We all froze. What is this guy's problem? The whole store was completely quiet, except for the TVs and the radio. they kept on blaring. He waited about five seconds then said "The Lord just told me to read though the Bible again." he paused as if in contemplation, then said "where should I start Lord?" waited again and said "He said to start at the beginning." Me and my co-worker just looked at each other not sure what to think. He got the impression this guy was making fun of him and wasting his time so he walked away. And the guy, now calling friend on his phone to tell him of this religious episode walked out the door. That was probably the most uncanny thing that happened at radio shack since I have worked there. One time there was a shoplifter came though the store after shoplifting at another store. I was not there unfortunately. A co-worker answered the phone. It was the store that got burglarized. They described the man that just walked though the store as the thief. So my co-worker ran him down and turned him over to the cops who were right behind them. I wish I could have been there!!

Every day there is a blast! Just when it gets to be same old same old an uncustomary customer walks in.

I began this entry a few weeks ago but did not finish it till now so not all the information is current.

Thanks for your comments!

Andy

Thanks for your prayers. On HSB I have four blogs but I don't use two of them very often at all. I have never been skiing and I don't really have the guts to anyway. I'll talk to you later.

Boy oh boy sounds like a .....uummmm....blast. Sorry Andy but I really am not seeing the fun in working in retail. Wear is the sweat and adrenaline and the satisfaction of knowing that all of the cows are doctord and the fences are fixed and the stalls are clean? No really I am gald that the Lord has worked everything out so that you can have a job!!!!!!!

There is lots of satisfaction in having a fellow walk into radio shack, say just pricing out your laptops and seeing him leave with a brand new laptop, mouse, laptop case, and a five year warranty. ahhhh.......
There is LOTS of satisfaction in retail.
I hate it when they put it on there credit card though. Especially the customers my age.

No problem, I'm sorry I didn't come and comment sooner but yesterday was a pretty busy day. All afternoon we played on our new Wii. :) It is so much fun. I did the Wii Fit last night and this morning and now every time I move my back hurts. But oh well, I guess it's worth it. I'm going to stop talking/typing now and go do Spanish. :D

Hello, I'm BookLover's sister. I figured that since she told you about me I'd better come over and say hi. Yep, I'll admit it -- I've been lurking for a while. :o) I really like your blog, and I came over from Amber's profile (you know her IRL, right? I asked her about how you and JessLBee and them all knew each other, but I can't remember all the ins and outs of it -- who lives next door to whom and who's met whom...).

I'm sort of envious that you get to work at Radio Shack. Of course, it's not like I would be getting a job in the first place, but I would love to work in a place like that!! Electronics are right up my alley.

I'm going to add your profile to my friends list, and I'd be glad to have you visit my blog sometime.

I love those cloud pictures! We don't really get any intersting clouds here... What kind of camera do you have? Does Radio Shack sell them? I don't think I've ever seen them there. (in the few times I've been there...)

wow that one is pretty creepy about the guy that thought he heard God....It was kinda a very general message, that would be like me saying God told me to shovel our entire property and then said 'start at the road" (the road touches about a quarter to 3/8's a mile)
and you are right, you have cured me from wanting to work in retail!!! or at the very least Radio shack.
so what have you been up to?
are you excited for tuesday?

wow, you did sleep a lot. Why did you need to catch up on sleep? Did you stay up late or something.....?
Yeah it was windy! But it was a warm wind, but not a mean one. I bet it was pretty worse on the lake though.

Thanks for the website address.....it was pretty cool.
