Digestive System Lapbook

Posted in Lapbooking

We are just about finished with our unit on the digestive system. We had a lot of
fun putting it together . Now for the big reveal.....
I do not know why my photos always come out blurry in blogger
but for some reason they do. Maybe it's the photo taker. lol

Let's start on the right hand side at the top. This is a mini book on
different kinds of Cells and how they work. We show little photos
inside of a nerve cell, red blood cells, Skin cells and muscle cells
along with an explanation about what that cells job is.

Below that is a mini book about Anton Van Leeuwenhoek . Mr.
leeuwenhoek figured out how to magnify objects by looking through
a rain drop at an insect. He created a microscope that magnifies 3X
smaller than most had at that time. The microscope photo on front
came from clip art at the microsoft website. This mini
book opens like an accordian. You can read the pages they
are in pencil and my photos are to blurry. (sorry)
You can however see how it opens.

Below that is a diaogram of a cell. This was done by my 2nd grader so
It's fairly simple. We labeled the Cell membrane, cytoplasm and Nucleus.
I also pulled out the old mircrosope and we inspected some of the
different slides that came with it and our own saliva. Interesting...

Down the Left hand side...

You will see a diagram of the digestive system. We colored this
along with the body we created on big paper of my child and
he cut out the shapes of the system and pasted them on. We also
read the book What Happens to a Hamburger by Paul Showers.
The coloring page comes from Dover publishing company.
We also did an experiment that is in the book and mashed up
a bananna to see what food looks like after being in the stomach.
(Note my son wanted to keep this.lol)

In the center....

We talked about the food pyramid and what our favorite food is
from each food group. Which food group we should have more of
(grains) and which we should have less of (fats) Thats the little triangle
book it opens up like this...

This worksheet came along with our K-12  program. It was supposed
to be 3-D but we wanted it in our lapbooks. Below that you will find
a food journal we found on the net. For one week we tracked the
foods we ate to see which foods we should eat more or less of.

At the very top are some game cards that go along with a game board
that is on the back of the lapbook.

You only move one space for each correct answer. We used colored dice for
our game pieces. In the past we have used mini erasers. The questions
pertain to the digestive system . There are a few freebies like you
ate some fruit today move 2 spaces. There is also a move back card
for eating to much candy.

Oh and the front cover I dont have a photo of but I took pictures
during the lesson and that is the cover plus the title.

Penguin Math

Posted in Lapbooking

We are continuing on with our Penguin lapbooks.
Today we worked on some Penguin Math.
We will be doing some more in the future.

I printed out the Penguin cards from Sea world.
If you missed it go here
Sea World.
We made a big chart measuring every inch on the blue
paper. The really neat thing about the Penguin cards is
that they say how tall the pengins are. You can measure
in Inches or Centimeters.

We also measured how tall each of
The kids were and marked to see
how much taller or shorter they were
from the tallest penguin to the smallest penguin.

Princess was about a head taller.

Super boy would be about facing a Emperior
penguin.

And Spirit boy in all his joy could not
get his arms to be as tall as the tallest
Penguin.

After that we did a math worksheet on
penguins that I got from Lulu.com
You can download the entire lapbook
and the math worksheet here.
Penguin Lapbook

I hope to play more penguin math games
from this site. I am really looking at the
penguin bowling. Penguin Math

Enjoy, let me know if you do any of these
I would love to come and see.

Penguin Lapbook --- Little Blots of Faith

Posted in Lapbooking

LB-Laplinks-Medium.gif

I have tried to post this 3 times now. Each
time I had trouble with my internet provider.
Here is crossing my fingers. lol

Valeries topic for this month on Little
Laplinks is Penguins. The kids and
I have already begun to start working
on them. We started out with a simple
craft. I just like to start things that way.
I wish I could give you the penguin pattern
but I drew it myself. :)

While the big kids were working
Spirit boy and I decided to go fishing.
We have done this before but thought
it went with the penguin theme.

It ended up being a fun way to work on
colors. First we fished for the green fish.
Then the yellow etc..

Here are some of the links I found
in creating a penguin lapbook

Penguin printables

Penguins from Squidoo

Sea World Guide to Penguins
This has some great printables. Including some
penguin cards and a map of where Penguins live.

* I am adding this later. Today we
did some fun penguin math. Go and see.

Little LapLink Pilgrims

Posted in Lapbooking

* Updated with finished Lapbook Photos!

LB-Laplinks-Medium.gif

Welcome to Novembers edition of Little Laplinks. This months theme is Pilgrims. If you arent fimilar with lapLinks then let me tell you about it. It's a fun way for homeschooling moms to share ideas in creating these wonderful lapbooks for elementary students. Valerie chooses a theme . Then we all start looking for Links for that theme. Then we get to work creating our lapbooks and last we display them on our blogs. Lots of fun!!

So let's begin. ... Here are my Links for our Nov. Pilgrim Theme.

My first link is Clip art that you can use while creating your own worksheets. I dont know if any of you know but on the microsoft website you can get free froms and free clip art that downloads directly into you programs. Its so easy to use Thankgiving Clip Art

Although I have several book on the first Thanksgiving I thought it might be fun to also read on the web from Scholastics.. Check that out here.
Read about the First Thanksgiving at Scholastics

This next link is actually a link within lots of Links. There are absolutely tons of links on Thanksgiving and pilgrims for you to look through.
Thanksgiving Theme Tons of Links

You might want to try Squidoo. At the bottom are some examples of thankgiving lapbooks. There is a link there that you can get a free Thanksgiving Lapbook from Hands of a child with a special code. Its not all about Pilgrims but it was pretty neat!
Thankgiving Lapbook Theme from Squidoo

Next you'll find some neat links about Pilgrims. You can visit a plantation virtually and lots of other neat links.
Pilgram Links

You might want to try this link too . It has some pilgrim fact cards for download which would be so neat in our lapbook. Pligrim Fact Cards

Although most of these things cant be done in a lapbook there are some great ideas to go along with them. Check it out.
Lots of Activitites to go along with your lapbook

You might also want to go to Living books for the ears. Radio shows for homeschoolers. They are offering a free story about the pilgrims stuggle for religious freedoms. I check this site often they usually offer a free story a week. So there might be more.
http://www.livingbooksfortheears.com/

Come back in a few weeks to see our completed books :)

I am back today to post the photos of our Thanksgiving lapbooks. I have to admit that I barely used the links above. I ended up going with a free lapbook that was offered from Live and Learn Press. Since Baby was so sick this was more practical to have the research and work finished for me. I have to say I really enjoyed this lapbook. It was very through. I didnt even use everything. I think I can probably make another lapbook from the things left over next year. Maybe more on the Native American side of the story.
If you want to check out Live and Learn press go to...
www.liveandlearnpress.com

On to the photos. Since both Superboys and Princess books were the same I only posted one today. I had planned for a preschool on with baby but since he was so sick we didnt do one.

This was our front cover. We used some photos of the pilgrims for something a friend sent me on sizes. Then they used our letter tile cards to create the word pilgrim at the top.

This is the center two pages. Here we learned terminology we would need to know as we learn about the pilgrims. We learned about the compact, the leaders ,the names of the children and the hardships for the Pilgrims at different stages of their lives.

This is the side. We learned how long the pilgrims were on the mayflower. What was on the menu compared to todays menu and  What the first thanksgiving was.

In the inside we made a graph to use during Thanksgiving to decide what was the best to eat. Dark or white meat. We also took our leaves from our thankful tree and added them to our books and made our own personal Thankful trees inside.

So let us know which is it Dark meat or White meat.
I personally Like white. :)

Christmas Carol Lapbook

Posted in Lapbooking

A friend last week sent me an email about looking for a lapbook for a Christmas Carol. I searched around and didn't find one. So I searched some links for her at 4 am. lol and came across some really neat ideas. I was thinking of making one myself. Then I entered some book contests on Pay it forward and won some books one is The story a Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens!! So I guess you know we will be making a lapbook now on this too. I thought today I might share with you the links that I found in my search. I will post the lapbook when we are finished with it as always.

Tour Dickens Home Online
Here you can tour Dickens home online and learn all about his life.
There is also a link about how to create a timeline of his life.

Comprehension questions

Scrooge for Mayor lesson
This is a really neat lesson in what scrooge would do if he were mayor after his changes. You learn about life in london and what the issues would be in the time period. Then children are to create a poster or brochure saying why Scrooge would be a good mayor.

Unit on Christmas Carol

Vocabulary lists, Biblical references that go with the story,Comparing of the 3 ghosts, what ghosts would visit you. Lots of fun ideas.

The story online

Traditions of Christmas
Traditions of that time period and Traditions that we do now.

Worksheets and Puzzles

Lesson plans for 2nd graders.

Lots of fabulous idea. I love the idea of comparing the Grinch with Scrooge.

If anyone is going to do a lapbook on a Christmas Carol too please leave me any links you may have. Thank you

Right now I am off to create a craft for Company porch and to work on our printouts for our Thanksgiving lapbook. :)

Pumkin lapbook elementary edition

Posted in Lapbooking

I hope you enjoy our pumpkin lapbooks.
Here are "Princess" and "SuperBoys" books.  The first one
here is "Superboys" He wrote pumpkins to practice his handwriting
in print at the top of our book.

This is Princess lapbook. She wrote her title in cursive.

Both children did the 5 little pumpkin (my revised version)
This can be found at my file share site.

http://www.4shared.com/dir/3867461/f56540a6/sharing.html
Along with a few of the others worksheets and things
that we made. Just look under the pumpkin
files for downloads.

Here is the inside of our books. On the top
left hand side . We have a pocket that says pumpkins
around the world. Inside this pumpkin is a cootie catcher.
I got this idea from Jamin. I know you all remember making
these in elementary school. The children learned about all the
colors pumpkins can be and drew them on the outside of the
cootie catchers.

We found out the pumpkins can be white, yellow,
green, blue, yellow, orange and Red. So I left the children
pick 4 colors. This was also great for Superboy as he has
been trying to learn howto spell color words.

Then we looked at different countries and what
they do ordont do with pumpkins.  Inside of our cooties
catcher we wrotethe country and underneath is their
tradition with pumpkins. My son wrote numbers by
each country because spelling them proved
hard. :) The facts about the pumpkins came from this site
http://www.pumpkinnook.com/commune/world.htm

Next down on the left side is how pumpkins grow.
We found this link at
http://www.kizclub.com/holidays.htm We made it
into a simple book of the life cycle of a pumpkin.

Next down on the left side is a mini book of pumpkin
facts. I actually go this printable from a lapbook made
about Halloween.Sorry dont remember where I got it from.
It had all the answers with it. I just read them to the
kids and they filled them in.

In the center I made the anatomy of a pumpkin and
the children drew the parts as we talked about it. This
printable is available inmy file share folder.

On the right hand side Princess created a book
of words that remind her of pumpkins. Pumkins, harvest,
etc.. and then tried touse the letters in those words to create
new words. The bottomare spices that are put into a pumpkin
pie. We got to smell some of the different spices. Later this
month we will actually make a pumpkin
pie and play in pumpkin pie play dough. :)

"Superboys" top right pumpkin is different then
"princess" he did abook that I wrote for him. He had to
read it then draw a picture
illustrating what the sentence means. I got this silly story from..
http://www.kinderkorner.com/pumpkinpatch.html

It goes like this..
This is Jack o Happy
This is Jack O sad
Now you see him sleepy
Now you see him mad
This is Jack in pieces small
But in a pie he's best of all.

*Note I do not know why my post has all those spaces starts and stops. It looks wonderful in the edit so I'm not sure how to fix it. I have tried a few times and it still comes back to that. So I hope its not to hard to read. I will let it at that. :)

Pumpkin Lapbook!! Toddler Lapbook

Posted in Lapbooking

Yeah we finished our pumpkin lapbooks and it was so much fun.
I have two levels of lapbooks I am showing in two posts.
First is my toddler. He is 19 months old. He doesnt talk yet
but is very aware of what is going on and enjoys gluing , coloring
and looking at books. So here is his...

At the top Baby colored  a pumpkin .All of my kids did the
5 little pumpkin poem .My version is a little different . It is in my file share which is here http://www.4shared.com/dir/3867461/f56540a6/sharing.html
This is Babies 5 pumpkin play board. I drew the fence for him and made felt pumpkins that are velcro underneath so he can stick and restick for fun.

Thats a close up of them and the velcro backs.

This is center of our lapbook. The right side is pumpkin faces that have velcro beside the faces. Baby has pieces that match these faces that he can velcro them beside their matching pumpkin. The pieces come from this site. http://www.preschoolprintables.com/filefolder/pumpkin/filefolderpumpkin.shtml  since baby is so small I didn't use all ofthe matching pumpkins I only picked three. The pieces are stored in a a baggie on the left side which you will see shortly.

The top center is a pumpkin shape face. Baby is to small for the shapes but he had fun trying to find where the eyes, nose and mouth went. The printable came from this site...
http://www.kidssoup.com/Halloween/Pumpkin_Crafts.html

At the bottom we did a Peter Peter Pumkin eater nusery rhyme.
Peters wife is laminated and pops out of the center hole. Here is the link to Peter Peter.
http://www.first-school.ws/activities/alpha/p/pumpkin.htm

Now for my left side. You see at the top a zip lock baggie book about how pumpkins grow. That printable comes from this site . http://www.kizclub.com/holidays.htm  At the bottom is the storage for our figures. You can see Peters wife is on the top . :) Since baby is so little I tried to make this lapbook interactive for him to play with. He loves being with us when we are learning and likes to dig his little hands into things so its best to have something for him to do.

Little Blots of Faith PUMPKIN LAPBOOK!!

Posted in Lapbooking

Little Blots of Faith is hosting a meme Called LapLinks.
Every month Valerie will post a topic idea for a lapbook for young children.
This months topic is Pumkins. What you do then is post some links of places that you have found that have to do with pumpkins that might be used for a lapbook for little hands. I have decided to join in on the meme.. I have not had  time to check out some of the other fellow participants as of yet so I hope I have not copied to many of the links.

On  Kids Soup webpage I found two really neat ideas for a lapbook . The one is a cutting activity called the "Little orange house " and a pumpkin matching game. I also like the 5 little pumpkins craft and poem but think I would like to change the poem for my children. Something like this maybe..

5 little pumpkins are sitting on a fence.
The first one says oh my its getting late.
The second one says I smell autumn in the air.
The third on says the leaves are everywhere
The fourth one says lets have some autumn fun
The fifth one says I 'm ready for some fun..
Plop goes the apples and out comes the pie.
We are all so happy to see the moon so high!

Then it would be really cute to create the pumpkin scene and use velcro on the pumpkins so they can be added with the poem. I am thinking of making this the front cover of the book.

I also found in
Kids Club
A print out of the life cycle of a pumpkin. One the page I linked to the printable is titled how a pumpkin grows. I think this will make a good mini book with in the lapbook.

This link is my favorite by far
http://www.kinderkorner.com/pumpkinpatch.htmlI

want to type up the Jack happy Jack sad story for my beginnger reader to add photos and read as another mini book.  There are other wonderful things in her to do I havent gotten to look at all of them yet.

Here is one more link to check out Mrs. Nelsons Class

I have also done in the past with my preschool class a whats inside the pumpkin book. After you dry pumkin sees you can create a pumpkin book. With seeds and yarn for the stingy things inside a pumpkin. You can number each page and then add that many strings and seeds for each one.

When My pumpkin book is finished I will post some photos so check back...

We are headed to the pumpkin farm on Friday so might add some photos to our book.

3 Branches of Government Lapbook

Posted in Lapbooking

"Princess" was having a tough time learning the 3 Branches of Government.
To be honest some adults have trouble with it. So we
decided to create a lapbook on just that topic.

For the Cover we found some art from the net.
We found a great photo with the preamble on it as well as the
state capital.

In the inside we decided Branches sounded like trees. So we created a paper tree and added the branches with mini books.

The White house at the top is representing the Executive Branch.
We have the Judicial Branch next.
The state capital for the Legislative Branch.
Then below that branch we have Congress (library of congress)
and the House of Represenatitves.
Each of the mini books inside has facts about each branch. In particular what job each has or what power each has. Very fun and by George I think shes got it. :)

Some other resources we used..

4th of July Lapbook

Posted in Lapbooking

4th of July lapbook. For my cover I used a coloring page and copied into word pad . Then made it smaller so I could title the Lapbook God Bless America.

On the right hand side. I have a song On a flag. Very cute about America.
Also a bible verse Psalm 119:45 I have gained perfect freedom by following your teachings. I found these printables at this site.
http://www.christianpreschoolprintables.com/blog1/  Valerie has some other cute 4th crafts . You will have to scroll down a bit to find the lapbook printables but her other fireworks crafts are cute too.

On the other side we have the liberty bell. That reads Leviticus 25:10... Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. Below that is a picture of the United states and children are instructed to color their state red and the states touching yours blue.

In the center I have a book similar to Valeries. It has her God bless America page, then declaration of independence, 13 stripes , 50 stars for counting, and a page to draw fireworks. I think Valerie did an accordian book. I also added America and the children have to think of a word that starts with the first letter of each. The other apple book is held together with brads. I actually found the apples at the dollar store. I wanted something to remind them of the math facts they did this year. So I added a math fun. Each apple has a problem on it to complete.

Then for fun I put a fourth word search and a dot to dot on the back.

We are going to do a few other things to. Using the books American People and Nation by Michael J. McHugh and Our Nation under God. To go over what Independence means to us. I also want to check out the Besty Ross Website and take a virtual tour of her home.

Just for fun mind you.
