Train up a Child

With the rearranging we are doing this week
Of our home. I simply leave you with this..

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words , for they become actions.
Watch you actions , for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your Character, for it becomes you destiny.

Train up a Child

Today for Train up a child I want to
talk about the curriculum we are using for
our bible training this year. I always feel
like I sort of skimp on this area. I did mention
before in another post that I had asked our
discipleship coordinator about any resources he
may know about. I think I decided on purchasing the
Rod and Staff readers for the kids to practice their
reading skills on. I am still debating on the workbooks
since we have another reading source. I just
wanted the bible stories as a silent read for each
child. I require them to read 15 min. per day on their
own. Why not 15 min. of bible reading or reader.
I think it will be good practice to have readers at their
age level. For some reason it is hard to find good bible
reasources. Wouldnt it be great to have Bible pockets
made just like the history pockets. I love those.
Maybe I'll create some bible pockets on my own for
The kids. They remind me of lapbooks in a way except
you get to store all the material in one space. They
are from the Evan Moore publishers. I think it
would be fun to create resources for this .

I know my train up a child is rambling today.
Thats sort of how I feel. Do I buy the Rod and Staff?
Do I just use our childrens bible? Do we create bible
pockets, lapbooks , or just read the bible? So hard
to decided. Training up a child can be hard sometimes.

Train up a Child- VBS

As I mentioned before this week were are emersed in
our VBS activities at our church. It has been full of fun and
a little tiring for us volunteers. I have the squeaky beaker
class which are the preschoolers. (Doing the Power Lab theme)
I have 21 children from ages 2-5 . It seems each night
we add another child to our list.  So we must be doing
something right. I have 5 adults not counting me and one teen.
Which I think we need.  It is so exciting and fun to see the
children learning about God and having such fun doing it.

One way that small children learn is through interaction.
Through hands on things they can touch and understand.
For example... On Tuesday we learned about Jesus
healing a blind man. I made oatmeal and used it as
the mud that Jesus used to heal the man. I took my little
man Spirit as the example. As I told the story I smeared a
little oatmeal on his cheeks. Then I told of how
he washed his face . I used a wet wipe to take it off
and the man was healed. The children related to this activity.
They were were telling everyone about the oatmeal mud and
how Jesus heals. It was so exciting to see.

Play is another way to get the lesson or bible story
in their minds. Yesterday we talked about Jesus
walking on water and the storm. We used a parachute
to tell the story. We gently shook the parachute fast
and faster to represent the storm. We talk about
how if you doubted you would fall in the water and
would be able to walk on it but Jesus was there and
would still keep us safe. Then we counted to three
poped the chute up and hide underneath it like a tent.
Telling them how Jesus takes care of us.

After awhile we were doing some games and the
station leader asked the children if they heard the story
today. They all yelled yes. She asked them who was
in the story. Children yelled Jesus, Peter .. and then on
child said ME... The story was so brought to life with
that parachute that she had imagined herself in it. How
awesome is that!!!

Another eye opener if little ones is to let them explore
Things around them. The day of the walk on water
lesson we also played in water. We did an experiement
To see  if items would sink or float to try to show
Them how miraculous this story was that Jesus walked
on water. Pretty amazing!!

These are really great things to do with children
to get them excited about God. To remember the story.
Some of these things we can do at home to show
are children how excited about we are and to help
them remember his word and want to know HIM.

Train up a Child

Over the summer my children like to ride their bikes. We
don't have a very big yard but there is enough room for
them to travel down the sidewalk and around the yard.

(This is Princess new bike for her birthday)

Most evening we wait till the weather is a bit cooler and
head out doors for a bike riding afternoon. Each of my
children approaches bike riding a little differently.

When Heart was small she took a long time before she trusted
riding on her own. She rode a lot with training wheels.
As she grew I began to worry that she would never want them
off so I pushed a little and took them off. She was upset
with me at first and mom spent a lot of time holding
her up. Eventually I left go and she took off on her own
and was surprised at how easily she had done so.

Princess started with the training wheels as well. She loved
to ride fast. After awhile I noticed that her training
wheels had become bent. As I watched her ride her
training wheels barely hit the ground. SO I took them off.
She was upset at first and began riding by drifting
around the yard with her feet up. She came in to me to
tell me that she just couldnt do it. Would I come out and
see that she needed her training wheels back on. I went
out and had to laugh. She says look mom this is all I can
do. I asked her to do it again and as she drifted I yelled
put your feet on the pedals and goo..... and so she did.

Superboy(8) still uses his training wheels. He even was
hesitant to ride with them on. He kind of wobbles back
and forth.  Outdoor activities really arent his thing. He much
prefers sitting with his crayons and drawing on the
porch. At times he wants to play too but wont get
on his bike he sort of runs along beside the riders. Keeping
 safe on the ground.

Spirit(2) is the opposite. He  loves to move and
ride. He started about by scooting around on a firetruck,
not long after a trike type bike and now a two wheeler with
training wheels. Mommy is almost more hesitant than he is.
He got on his bike 2 days ago and already is balancing
and beginning to push the pedals. I know it wont be long
before he is going around the yard .

As you can see each of my children learned to ride their
bikes in a differnt way. Each of my children are different and
Each will find and search out the Lord in their own way.
They may be timid, they may watch from the side
for awhile, they may jump right in, or they may be there
and just not know it yet. Either way it is my job as their
parent to protect them (helmets, elbow and knee pads),
to guide them as they go (holding them up or telling them the
next step), and then letting them go. They may fall ,
they may be afraid, they might go for awhile and then
fall again, or they may soar. Either way I will guide them
as needed and in any which way they need me to be
there for them. Each different .. Each one day at their
own time will find and know the Lord.

Train up a Child -- Taking Care of the Family

It has been a long week for Superboy. I love him so
much but some how he has grown up not doing things
For himself. I blame that on the fact that he has
2 sisters. When he was little and it was time to pick
up if he fussed a little the girls would jump in and help
him. To this day they still do that.  Last week I
asked Superboy to clean out his dresser since it
was so messy. He fussed about it for a bit and all
was quiet. I thought he was working on it, until I
went upstairs and saw his sister doing it for him.

After having a long talk with sister I decided I better
get ahold of this now. I dont want him to grow up and
be a burden to his wife one day . He just doesnt focus on
what he is doing most of the time. Here is an example...

I ask him to take a blanket upstairs. He walks past it
talking about how he will take it up when he goes upstairs.
He opens the fridge and walks away leaving the fridge
door open. Then he sits the milk on the counter . Pours
The milk and leaves a big milk mess beside the glass.
He drinks his milk leaves the mess and the glass on the table.
Off he goes up the stairs.

This is where I come in.. LOL I call him back and have
him complete all the tasks he should have completed.
He has had a rough week because I have done this
all week long. I want him to remember on his own with
out his sister or without me reminding him. It is going to
be a long summer. lol

Train up a Child --- Attitude

Does your Attitude reflect Gods Glory?
Does your Childs attitude ?

The story in the bible I want to look at
today is the story from Daniel.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were brought
before Nebuchadnezzar. They were to worship the
Gold Idols that he placed before them.
These three bravely but respectably denyed
Nebuchadnezzar. They stood alone and did not
follow the crowd. They could have simply said
God knows my heart . Lets save ourselves and
bow down. God knows who we worship. Since
they would not do this they were placed in a
fiery furnace. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
completely trusted God. They said if we have
faith in our God he will save us and if he does
not we will still be saved because we will be
delivered from this situation. They completely
gave it to God. When Nebuchadnezzar looked
into the firey pit he saw 4 figures. The 3 were
not burned , singed or even smelled of fire.
The fourth was Jesus keeping them safe.

We want to follow this example as we go
through trial in life. With positive attitude
and completely trusting God he will reach
out and save us.

A positive attitude is for you to
control. It is in you to decide if you will happily
serve your Lord and Saviour or if you will
grumble though. Even if your situation isnt
as grave as these three. Let them be an example
to us to happily serve our Lord with a positive attitude.

*Note this is also a great lesson for
teens about standing alone. Not following the
crowd. One day when the face God they
and they alone will face him. It wont be
a gathering of peers. God wont say well since
so and so did it I guess its ok.

Train up a child--- Leading the way!

Lead the way!

Yesterday the children and I went to our local state
park . I may have mentioned before that our local library
is doing letter boxing this year. We were given a field guide
book to use. The theme for this year is bugs which is a
great theme to go along with the letterboxing. There
are several parks involved with this in our area. Yesterday
we visited one such park. This park has 3 boxes hidden
in their park. We so far have located 2. The kids were
getting hot and tired so we will look for the 3rd another day.

The idea of the journey is to use you guide and blindly
follow the directions until you reach your destination not
actually knowing where that might be.....

Pass the bird houses and continue straight ahead
Facing the bridge across the water, turn left
and walk along the edge of the water. ....

I allowed the children to lead us along. taking turns
reading the direction and leading the way. At one
point we made a wrong turn and almost missed our
mark but Daddy saw the way and turned us around.

At another location we ended up almost where we started
making a loop of sorts.

This was a lesson for our children in many ways.

Our  Bug Guide was our manual
(  as is our bible) We must follow what it says
or we may get lost and although we at times
make a wrong turn. Moms and Dads
are here to help them get back on the right track .

As so goes my favorite bible verse..

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart. Lean not on your own
understanding. In all ways acknowledge him. He will
make your path straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Kids finding their letter box. Not a great photo but you
can see they were all smiles.

Train up a Child --- JOY

Here are some quesitons to think about...

If you asked your children would they say
you are Joyful?

Do you see yourself as Joyful?

It can be really hard to be filled with joy all the time.
Especially if you have a large family or if your children
seem to be negative all the time.

If you feel this way then why do you feel the joy is gone?
Lets figure things out. What is the reason for the
lack of joy . Is it lack of organization or managment?
Is there confusion with the children
about the rules or who is in charge?
I love this quote from Micheal Pearl of No greater JOY.
"If the joy of the Lord is the Christians strength, is not the joy
Of the parent the child's strength."

As usual with parenting this puts a lot of
pressure on Parents. You may not be
feeling inside joyful all the time
but are you not Joyful of the Lord.
Take that and apply it to your life. If
your child wakes up in the morning unhappy
and then you greet them with more unhappiness
then your day will be full of frustration.
Put that smile on anyway and let your child know
how glad you are to see him or her in the morning.

I have a child with adhd, anxiety disorder and dyslexia.
Some days are long and hard. If I am feeling down and my
girl comes down stairs in the morning feeling frustrated
already then will my sad heart not bring her down more.
It is my job as a parent to bring her joy. I always greet
them with  excitement to see them each day
and a big hug. We end our day this way too.

Someone once asked me how do I bring my child
to God and even recently I was
asking myself this very question.
When you are working in the ministry you bring Gods
grace to them through your Joy of Jesus Christ. That Joy
bubbles over to the children. I have obviously found my
answers in that... Joy in Christ is brought to my children
though me. Through my Joy in Him. If I dont have that
complete faith and Love . Then they wont either.

Allow your children to see the Joy you feel in the
Lord. Think how amazing he is and wonderful.
Even if life is hard and a struggle God is so Good.
Isnt that reason enough to feel that JOY.

Now take that and pass it on to the ones
you love the most. :) Spread the JOY

JOB 33:26  He prays to God and finds favor
with him, he sees God's face and
shouts for joy; he is restored by God to his righteous state

JER 15:16  When your words came,
I ate them; they were my joy and my
heart's delight, for I bear your name,
O LORD God Almighty

Rhyming and Song

Train up a Child.....

My son stuggles a little with speech. Eventually he will pick up
on the words and what they mean.  At first I was really concerned...
Or I should say I was recieving much pressure from his Ped.
After I calmed down a little and really thought about it and Prayed about it.
I decided to sit back and let him develop on his own. OH now
mind you that doesn't mean I have put my head in the sand. I do make a point of
naming things around me as he repeats them. We also read and read
and read books. I  also have noticed  he picks up words quicker
with songs. Litte tunes like the wheels on the  bus, itsey bitsey spider,
5 monkeys jumping on the bed, and Patty cake. I really enjoyed doing
these songs with him and found some other great ones on the
net I had not heard of before. Then I started searching for some
bible based songs and found some good ones.... Like this one that I
learned when I was little and went to sunday school.

Here Is The Church

Here is the church,
(fold hands with fingers inside)

Here is the steeple.
(put index fingers together to form steeple)

Open the doors,
(part thumbs)

And there are the people.

(reveal fingers, and move them around)

Close the doors,
(put thumbs together again, concealing fingers)

And hear them pray.
(hand to ear)

Open the doors,
(part thumbs)

And they all walk away.
(unfold hands; fingers "walk" away)

Thankful Thursday

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you so much for such a glorious day. The flowers are blooming
I hear the birds chirping from the window and everything is so green.
I thank you for the time the children and I spent yesterday out
side. It was so good to be out in the fresh air.

I Thank you for the Old School House magazine. I recieved my copy
yesterday and was so excited to open it's pages. Right there in the
front was an article about burning yourself out . Making sure that when
this happens that you have a strong base for homeschooling. That
strong base Lord is You. Without you I could not be doing this or making
it through each and everyday. Thank you for your guidance and patience
with me.

Thank you also for the chance on Saturday to visit my first
homeschool convention. I can hardly wait to go. I ask that you
watch over us as we drive to our destination. That we will get there
in a safe manner. As I move through the convention I ask that you
give me the guidance to choose the right curriculum for my children.
That I may find the right bible study for them so that I can
teach them to know you better.

May you blessings abound us.
In Jesus Name
I pray
AMEN

Train Up a child -- Learning disablities

I have started a few posts recently on Learning disabilities
I have so much more to say on this topic but decided to
talk about dyslexia today on Train up a child. Click my
side bar for more on this topic. I will be adding a lot here
in the next few months.

How do you train a child that has a disability such as dyslexia??

One that........

Asks endless questions but seem disinterested in the answers.
Can remember TV shows but can't remember her telephone number.
Good kid  but struggles to understand and learn.
Rushes headlong into work but gets every problem wrong.
Loses school work, misplaces books, forgets where she is
Or where he/she is supposed to be.
Leaves a trail of belongings.
Prefers to play with younger children.
Likes routine- is upset by change and is
reluctant to try anything new.
Wants everything done the same way.
Can do something on day and not the next.
Extrodinary talents but cant manage daily life.
Impulsive and easily distracted.

With all of this stacked up. How do you teach a child
like this to love God?

Prayers- Pray over your child. Pray for understanding.
Pray for God to help guide them through life. Pray for
His loving light to shine through.

Read- Read the bible stories to your child regularly.
It may take longer for them to remember them but repetition helps.
Have them draw while you read to help enforce
the story.

Hands on- Create hands on experiences that go along
with the lessons at hand. Being able to touch and feel
things will bring it to life for them.

Your Faith- Lastly allow you love of Christ to shine
through in your daily life. If you are excited about loving
God then they will be excited also.

Train up a Child

When I think of my heritage it is sometimes scary
to embrace who I am and where I have come from.
In essance it defines who I am.
For example.. My grandpa was
a worrier. He always was concerned about all of his
grandchildren and children. To the point that sometimes I think
that is may have made him sick because of dangers
one of us may have to encounger or deal with. I find
myself a worrier to . Past down from each generation.
Maybe not a good thing and yet I still worry.

I also come from a family of farmers. Our family has long
since put the plow down but each year Grandpa would tend
a garden. I to always feel that pull when spring comes to plant
something. Since we live in an apartment that is hard to do
yet I still feel the pull to grow something. In all honesty
I dont have a green thumb yet I still want to try. lol

Even though my step father is not blood related
I still have some of his traits as well. He gave me
the gift and love of animal, especially horses. They are
So gracefull and beautiful.

He also gave me the love of Art and drawing because
he took that time to do these things with me. My point of adding
my step father is that all relationships form who we are
including our blood relationships and non blood relationships.

My great grandfather who I have never known was
a pastor. A pastor of the same church I now attend.
I remember my love of God being so strong. Something
always pulling me toward Him. My point is this...
Some things are passed to your child because
its in him. Somethings are passed because its learned.

What things do you want to pass to your child?
What legacy will you leave?

Happy Birthday to my Step father, My
grandpa (see side bar) and my uncle !!!
I hope you all have a great day in
heaven and on earth. :)

Train up a Child -- Time

This week as many of you may have noticed I
had a bit of a rough week. In the midst of just
little things one after another going wrong I managed to
make the most of it. Yet it was enough
to stress any mom. I decided to stop and have
a little fun time. I used to do this with my oldest
daughter when she was little it was such a fun time.

I got out my paints , brushes, and toothpicks.
I then did Princess nails. I used acrylic paints
to paint little daisys on her nails. The boys
wanted in the action and I painted
snakes and dinosaurs on their arms.

I dont know if I taught them anything at that moment
maybe just that mom loved them enough to
stop and play . That I care and love them.
Hmm thats just about everything isn't it.

Teachers Psalm

The Lord is my helper; I shall not fear in guiding these pupils.

He leads me to the heart of the truth and
prepares the mind of the pupils for the truth.

He gives me a vision of the immortality of these lives.

He leads me to see the sacredness of teaching His book.

Yea, though I become discouraged and despair
at times, yet shall I lift my head, for His promises cannot fail me.

His word will not return to Him void, and my
faith undimmed shall burn through all the coming years.

You walk before me that the seed planted shall grow.

You shall stand by my side on Sunday (and everyday) and
speak through these lips so that His children
may feel that Father God is near them.

You shall cause each broken effort to gather
sheaves through unnumbered years. My joy
is full when I know that every
effort in Your name shall abide forever.

Surely Your love and care shall be with me
everyday of my life, and some day I shall live
with those who turn many to righteousness  for ever and ever.

Train up a child... with Love

Guide with Love.

I know this is easier said then
done yet the bible mentions love
many times . Its not that we dont love
our children its just hard to always guide in a loving way.
We each have our frustrations and trials. Yet we must
try every day to guide with love. I know that personally if
I take the time to gently lead the day goes much
more smoothly  then when I am anxious and quick to judge
without to much question or communication.
As the saying goes... You can catch
more flies with Honey then with vinegar.

Hatred stirs up dissention,
but love covers over all wrongs.
Proverbs 10:12

God is love; and he that dwelleth
in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
I John 4:16

Let love and faithfulness never
leave you …write them on the tablet of your heart.
Proverbs 3:3

A new commandment I give unto you, That
ye love one another; as I have loved you….
John 13:34

We love him, because he first loved us.
I John 4:19

Train up a Child -- Being there for you little one

Every Year I like to help with Vacation Bible school at our
church. In the past I have helped with the little ones and
then years later moved out to the craft area
so I could see all of my children pass through.
This year however I have decided
to help with Spirit boys group. I have done this for all of
them when they were to small for mommy to be comforatable
in leaving them alone . Now its Spirit boys turn.

As a homeschooling mom it might not surprise you
when I say that I believe in being involved in what my children
are doing. I want them to see me working and playing
beside them. So I help out in whatever they are doing
to encouage them and let them know they
are so important to me. By helping with VBS
for my other children I get into the complex
realization that Spirit boy is probably to small
to participate on his own. Then I decide to participate
at his age level. To be there to watch over him
and guide him where needed.

I strongly believe that when they are young
you keep them close to you. Allowing them to
watch and participate in whatever you are doing.
Yes , this makes things take longer when
accomplishing tasks and Yes it
can be frustrating at times. However as time progresses
you reap the awards by seeing your older children
able to function in society in a respectable way.

As an example I know that during Vaction bible
school that my teen will be able to actually help
now and know what is expected of her. I know that
Princess and Superboy will be able to enjoy the
activities on their own . I know that Spirit boy will
have me with him to guide him and learn a new
behaviour. All the children will have me at their
finger tips if need be. Each are now at a different
level of being able to enjoy this event. This
goes just as well for home activities. Each being
able to complete things at a different level
and then eventually into adulthood.

When they are little keep them close
and teach them well.

Train up a Child- Prepare for Christ...

In preparation for Easter I had this fun idea for youth
that in the coming years I know I will use again and
with my family as a tradition.

For our family event..
I read the resurrection passages from the bible.
We had left off with Communion and prayer at mount
Olives. We read Luke 22 47-71
Then Luke 23-to the end of Luke.
It is pretty long for the little ones you could use
a childrens bible or story book as well. For my
10 year old I like to read now from the bible.

Then we prepared this craft.

I cut the crosses ahead of time from craft foam.
I gave the cross to the children and told them
to write with sharpie what Easter means to them.
I gave them some flowers to glue on as well.
Then we taped a dowel rod to the back.
(the ones pictured above are from youth group)

That evening in youth I took the children outside
and we stuck them in the ground. This was a
very profound moment and the children were quiet.
We prayed around the crosses and some jumped in
with their own prayer.

I did take the cross out because they were calling
For a big rain storm and was concerned they wouldnt
stay together. So to display them for Easter . I put
a few rocks in the bottom of the flower pot and some
easter grass. Then stuck the crosses in the pots.

The children talked about this even  the following week
as well. I really enjoyed this and hope to make this
a tradition in our home.

Train up a child--- Teach them young

TEACH THEM YOUNG!!
REMINDER TO SELF

I honestly don't know how it happened. Somehow
I have left this one small thing go. Spirit boy
is still fighting me with his
bottle and he is 2 now. I know better I honestly do.
I have had children before. It wasn't a shock that
it was time to take it. Yet for some reason I still gave
It to him. It just was easier that way. This
time ,with this baby,
Spirit boy seems younger. More baby and
immature than the rest had. So I allowed it. Here
I am today sitting here while he cries and cries for
his naptime bottle. I have managed to get him to nap
and bed time bottles. It has gotten to the point now
where he chews on them and I have to buy more.
Well not this time. As they have been chewed we
have thrown them away. We are down to one. I
know what my mistake was. The longer you wait
on these things the more attached they become. The
harder it is for them to change.

I realize this goes the same for all of my children
not just the toddler with his bottle. I can't take
a moment off because I dont want something my child
does wrong to become a bad habit that stays with
him. Which is hard, oh so hard when you have your
own bad habits. lol Yet if we allow manners to go
out the door just this time at dinner then next time
they may go , and the next and the next and
before you know it manners are gone. I am not
saying to be militant about it . Yet just dont
look away to long, like I did with my toddlers
bottles. I was busy with this and busy with
that and before I knew it he still had that bottle
and was really to old to have it anymore. Its
a balancing act for sure. Making sure they are polite,
eat well, sleep well and the list goes on and on.
I just have to remember not to look away to long. :)

*Note by the time I finished this Spirit boy fell
asleep without his bottle. :) Now for bed time. Ughh.
