Frugal tip # 11 - Porridge (Oatmeal) for breakfast!

Posted in Frugal Living

Porridge for breakfast is really cheap (Rolled Oats from the bulk bin section of the supermarket or bulk foods store costs 29c in NZ$ per 100gm - which is 1.5 servings for myself and three children) and healthy...the children and I have it for breakfast Monday - Friday, having cereal or other breakfast foods only in the weekends.

I won't say that it's the childrens favorite breakfast...but they're used to it, and look forward to something different in the weekends.  I sweeten it with raw honey (much healther than sugar!) and stir a spoonful or two of milk powder into the pot to add in some calcium and make it nice and creamy.

Jan. 7, 2007 - Yummy things to add to porridge

we usually add raisins or McIntosh apples (sliced) with cinnamon to our porridge, good for you and tastes great! A little less frugal perhaps. Maybe you might like to try it.

Feb. 9, 2007 - Porridge

Do they even eat porridge in summer? It's too hot here (Australia) to do that!

Other things to try in porridge: jams, cream cheese (I'm told), yoghurt, cinnamon.

Well, we have been so far...it's not quite so hot here as in Oz. I have been thinking about having 'cold porridge' - soaking the oats in water/milk overnight to eat cold in the morning.

Feb. 13, 2007 - Bircher Museli?

Have you tried Bircher Museli? It's not quite as frugal as porridge but still very cheap and very yummy.

1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup milk (can used powdered milk)
1/2 cup yoghurt
1 grated apple, small

Mix together and put in fridge overnight ready for breakfast the next morning.

If your apple is a juicy one, you will need less milk or can add more oats. You can add sultanas or other dried fruit to this the night before, or add fresh fruit, nuts or seeds to it in the morning.

If you use natural yoghurt, add a tablespoon of honey to sweeten.
