Countdown To A New School Year
Summer vacation is just about over for us -- school starts again this Friday. I have all my books and materials organized and a tentative lesson plan set up -- "tentative" because I know that once our activities start up again in September, I'll have to re-arrange some of the plans anyway
And this year, we actually have a school room. Kinda. Maybe more of a school room/play room/basement.
Our first years of homeschooling, we did our work at the kitchen table. Which was fine, except we sometimes needed the table to -- you know -- eat. I'd have to move big stacks of paper around, or a school book would be set into some leftover syrup from breakfast that I had missed wiping up.
Last year, we set up a table in what we refer to as the dining room, although we never actually eat in it. The boys had their desks in the kitchen when they needed to work quietly, but it was still difficult -- there wasn't enough storage space, and the whole area usually was inundated by papers and books.
So -- we have spent the summer cleaning out our unfinished basement and setting up an area for us to work. We bought several huge shelving units, lots of storage containers, and a few carpet remnants. The boys' desks are down there now, along with our school table, and crates of school supplies, books, my Sonlight IGs, and stacks of paper. Matt's old record player is down there too -- the boys are just amazed at this wonderous thing called a "phonograph". They've been playing his old records, including the Best of the Monkees, which I could never hear again and be very happy.
The novelty of having our own school room is helping me work up my enthusiasm for the start of another year. This will be our 5th year of homeschooling -- does that make me a veteran yet? |
