"...it is upon the mothers of the present that the future of the world depends...." (Home Education, Charlotte Mason, p.2)
What an awesome statement! Charlotte Mason explains that it is the mother who directs the early, most impressionable years of a child. What an important job we have. A job which compares to no other. A job in which we should strive for excellence. How wonderful if all mother's would take the position they are given so seriously.
Here is a quote from the first chapter of Home Education that is worth noting:
"...the education of their children during the first six years of life is an undertaking hardly to be entrusted to any hands but their own. And they will take it up as their profession - that is, with the diligence, regularity, and punctuality which men bestow on their professional labours."
The influence we have on our children is so great and should not be taken lightly. No one can teach them better than we can. We know them - better than a teacher in a room with thirty other kids. We are connected to them. If God blessed us with the gift of children we should do our utmost to care and nuture them - Grow them up in the Lord. Our goal should be to show our children the way to heaven and to live rightly while here on earth.
Here is another worthy quote:
"The parents of but one child may be cherishing what shall prove to be a blessing to the world. But then, entrusted with such a charge, they are not free to say, 'I may do as I will with mine own.' "
Thinking of my role as a mother in this light can only lead me to be a better parent for my child. How about you? |
