Tonight I had a rough evening and was really feeling down. Right in the middle of a dark moment I flipped open the church bulletin and read something that was just what I needed......a kick in the pants of sorts. I wanted to share it with all of you.
Moving Mountains
Do you believe that one day years ago a man just like you and me was able to control the rainfall cycle of a whole nation just by praying? (Elijah - 1 Kings 17-18)
Do you believe that a dying man added fifteen more years to his life because he prayed to live? (King Hezekiah - 2 Kings 20)
Do you believe that a previously barren woman became able to conceive and bear a son because she talked to God about her problem? (Hannah - 1 Samuel 1-2)
Do you believe that at least twice in history a mans prayer was all he needed to stop the movement of the solar system so that "the sun stood still" or, in one case, went backwards? (Joshua 10:12-14 and 2 Kings 20:8-11)
Incredible as these stories may sound to us today, they are recorded in the Bible as actual fact.
Maybe that explains why some of us get so discouraged. When our troubles pile up so heavy that were ready to throw in the towel, we are usually coping with situations too big for us to handle by ourselves and we have not thought of asking God to handle them for us!
Christ recommended prayer as an alternative to depression. He taught that we "ought always to pray and not lose heart." Too often we try every possible solution to some problem except praying about it. Then we despair because things arent getting any better. Only God can move some mountains: trying to move them without asking His help is foolish and frustrating.

Reading this certainly convicted me of the need for prayer. Jesus was a man of prayer - that was where he got His strength. If He, the Son of God, needed to pray much then it is just as important, if not more so, for me to do the same. God knows us and cares about us. He ALWAYS answers our prayers - sometimes He says "Yes", other times He says "No", and perhaps even, "I have something better for you". He knows best and will give us what we need......if only we will ask. I know I need to pray more and am determined to do so.
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayers and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. " Phillipians 4:6-7 |
