Aug. 23, 2006 - Hummingbird Moth

Posted in Nature Study

Look what we had in our yard:

It's a hummingbird moth.  I have never seen one!  There were four of them at these flowers!

Here  is a close up look:

How incredibly amazing! I had no idea there was any such creature. I generally think moths are creepy little things, but I really enjoyed seeing these. We looked at the link you provided and my boys we actually arguing that some of the pictures might really be hummingbirds!! Thanks for posting this!

I love flowers, I wish I was better at keeping them alive! You are lucky to have found such a find. That alone is a lesson for the day for the kids.

I generally think of moths as pests until I get a closer look, some are very pretty, like this one. I just read your last post and loved learning the definitions. Nice to finally learn what billabong means, I knew it wasn't just a brand name (of something, can't remember at the moment). Love visiting your blog. Take care!

Hey I just seen one of these yesterday at a salvia plant I have. To think that a moth has a long beak(?) (I don't know just what to call it)!

By the way, I tagged you if you want to be "It". :)

and they were making the exact same sound as hummingbirds. We thought that was what they were, until we saw a special on television about them. Neat pictures!
