Sep. 3, 2006 - Little Ears are Listening!

Posted in Child Training

A few days ago we went on a picnic with some friends from the playgroup we have attended in the past. As we were eating lunch I become more and more uncomfortable with the conversation. These moms were still talking as though the kids couldn’t understand what they were saying. My daughter is 5 and she has VERY good ears. I have be amazed at how she can hear things I’m saying while on the phone in a different room.

It is a hard adjustment to control our conversation for the sake of the little ones - but a necessary course of action.

As a Bible class teacher, I have been surprised and amazed at the stories some kids have to tell. For example, one little girl informed me that her Dad said such and such but her mommy said he didn’t mean it - he was just being mean!! I don’t even know her parents very well, I’m sure they would be mortified if they knew she told me ! All I can say is....I’m glad I’m my own kids teacher - they don’t have anyone to tell!

Even at the dinner table we are having to save certain discussions for a later time - usually after the kids are in bed.

We are still working on this - it is not easy.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and for leaving a comment! I love meeting new friends here at Homeschool Blogger. You must have stopped over in the middle of my "construction"~ attempting to update my blog for the fall season.
If you ever have any adoption questions, feel free to direct them my way~ it's a passion of mine (obviously!)

You are so right about "little ears". I'm always amazed when I hear people gossiping or degraging someone, right on fromt of their children!! It's bad enough to be doing it, but in earshot of the kids?!??!! The kids do not need to know how their parents feel about Grandma's new man friend, or Aunt Sally's drinking problem. It's not appropriate! Someone in my family does this all the time and I'm constantly reminding her that I'd rather not discuss it (whatever it may be) in front of my kids. I definitely enjoyed your post today! I also enjoyed your potato photos the other day. How great!

im doing a lot of reading this year so that i can get into a really good school. back then, a princess on my island (no joke) died and in her will she wanted to make a school for kids with hawaiian blood. and so since i am one of those people, i am going to test to get in because its the best school on this island. Well, for homeschooling, im learning about all sorts of stuff but i dont know what curriculumn im doing. if i spelled that right. yeah so i hope that answers your questions.

You will find that keeping this at the forefront of your awareness will save you much heartache in later years. Another good one is to remember that an apology to a child goes a long way when we have said things that aren't wise around our children. I'm glad you posted this information. Have a great day and nice to meet you. BTW my daughter lived in Oz for a year and loved it!
