Oct. 4, 2006 - Pledge of Allegiance

Posted in General

For anyone who cares to answer...I would like to know if you start your homeschool day with the Pledge of Allegiance.  Please leave me a comment.  It would be even better if you could tell me why or why not.

Thanks

Stacy

Oct. 4, 2006 - We do!

It is one of the traditions about going to school that I appreciate and with so many jaded, cynical and otherwise unpatriotic opinions roaming around- I want to teach my children to appreciate the country they live in and the freedoms they enjoy. This is a building block in my opinion.

Enjoy Your Blessings

Stacy, We don't start our day with the pledge. I guess because there is always so many other things pressing. It's just never been on my list of things that I wanted to do.

I think it's very important that they learn the pledge though. In our 4-H club they recite it, so my kids do say it once a month. :)

Only because I am a very unstructured person. I want the girls to learn it but probably won't do it daily.

.....and, to be perfectly honest, I never really thought about why/ why not! So, I don't have a good answer for you!
I went to a Christian school~ we did the pledge to the American Flag, Christian Flag, and the Bible.

We don't own a flag and can't buy one here but we could color one off the internet so that's no excuse is it? I really need to start doing this. Thanks.

Oct. 6, 2006 - We do

Very recently we've started doing the pledge every morning. I realized that my little ones didn't know anything about our flag, the pledge and another American symbols. That is all about to change because I've ordered My Father's World Adventures and it's a year long curriculum all about America!
I pulled out our old A Beka Grade 1 History book "My America and My World" and it's a great intro to American symbols. So we've learned about the flag and what the colors, stripes and stars stand for, the pledge and what each line means, and now we're talking about American freedoms.
the kids have loved doing the pledge, and take turns holding our small flag as we say the pledge. I think it teaches them respect and love for their country. I may be odd, but I can never say the pledge without getting a little choked up. Yes America has it's faults, but I'm awfully proud of all the great founding fathers who set up this great country!

No, we don't start our day with the Pledge. I taught it to my kids because I think as an educated American, they need to know it, but that's all the further I'm taking it. I love my country, but I'm not going to start my day so formally. There are little rituals and routines we do in the morning, but this isn't one of them.

I try to start the week out with it so we do it at least once a week. But not daily.

Oct. 10, 2006 - We did; now we don't always.

When my girls started Kindergarten we did this every day. You know there is not all that much to do in K and I wanted them to learn all the pledges we do for VBS at our church. So I let one hold the American flag, one hold the Christian flag and I held the Bible. They could say them all by the end of K (at ages 5 and 4). Now they probably can't do it quite as well. As we added things to do in each grade I started getting selective with my time. Also, I began to feel that I was not honoring God as the highest. So now we pray first and do Bible reading. I try once a month (usually the 1st) to say all three. I remind the girls that we can pledge allegiance to the American flag as long as the leaders do not ask us to compromise our beliefs in God and the Bible. We do the godly pledges first now and the American flag last. I do love America! We also sing a patriotic hymn at this time. BTW, did you know that the Star Spangled Banner has two verses? The one never sung honors God! So there is my late answer and that reminds me that we didn't do it on the first because the first was a Sunday! Maybe we will start school with that tomorrow! Thanks!
