Oct. 17, 2006 - Teaching your child to respond when wronged

Posted in Child Training

This is something that I am dealing with and trying to sort out.  Having a child who breaks down easily has been a challenge.  One child snatches something away from her and you can hear the screaming from a mile away.  I know that many have dealt with the same thing.  Who likes it when someone snatches something from you?  I know I don’t!  But over the years I have learned to control my desire to scream and cry When do we turn the other cheek?  We should care more about our relationship with people rather than things.

When other children do not act the way they should, how do you teach your children to respond?  I don’t want her to retaliate, but I don’t want her to be walked on all the time.

I just asked her what she would do if someone was not acting right, she said, “ say, ‘stop that please’. And then if they don’t - walk away!” That is pretty good.
Sometimes you can’t really walk away, maybe you are in a class.  What then?  She said, “Ignore them” That is not a bad idea.  What else....get an adult.  How about saying, “Oh well” and not standing up for your rights? What do you think?

We have acted out some situations she may encounter, for example: someone pushing in line at gymnastics.

Even though she is only 5 years old I am still trying to teach her to be like Jesus. I am still learning how to do that myself.  Much of child training has been focused on her behavior, her acting right and treating others kindly...what about when she is not treated well?

Just wondering and hoping some of you wise ladies may have a little insight for me.

Oct. 17, 2006 - Peacemaker material

Posted by Sonya@simplycharlottemason.com
One thing that really helped our family is the material from Peacemaker Ministries. It gave me the tools to help the children get a handle on conflict resolution that is truly Biblical. For example, it taught us how conflict is an opportunity to glorify God, and that one of my choices when wronged is to choose to overlook that offense. (Your comments reminded me of that option in this material.) And it presents those choices in a little illustration that makes so much sense -- the slippery slope.

We didn't use the Young Peacemaker curriculum because I didn't really like the cartoons. (Personal preference :-) But the concepts are SO valuable and helpful! Even reading their Foundational Principles articles on their website will give you a good starting point. I highly recommend it! http://www.peacemaker.net/

Oct. 18, 2006 - Honestly I've got one child who is the complete opposite of this and 2 that need the same training

For my oldest, we're teaching when to stand up and when to give grace. Jesus was NOT a doormat. He had the power and he stood up when he felt the situation called for it. When he responded by extending grace, he chose that response out of strength and not weakness. As we are constantly saying to our 2nd son, it's okay to be angry but don't sin in your anger.

It's tricky and I'll try to respond with more thoughts later. It sounds like you and your daughter are making a great start in dealing with the issue.

Oct. 18, 2006 - Hi!

I started LHTH in the beginning of August. I am very happy with it. It focuses alot on dramatic play, Bible stories, and learning letters. It has some math, and art, music, and a few more things scattered here and there. I like that it empahsizes the three I mentioned. I am finding that my boys are now play acting more from the stories we have read versus what they have seen on TV. It is sometimes over my 2 year olds head, but it is perfect for my 3 year old. And I love it when we are talking with friends and my 3 year old mentions some element of a Bible story that few 3 year olds would know. It is an awesome foundation for them to build on.

Lastly, I like what janod said above, "it's OK to be angry, but not sin in your anger." That is something I think if my boys hear that enough, they will understand.
