Nov. 19, 2006 - Giving Thanks in God's word

Posted in Encouragement for Moms

Since Thanksgiving s this week I thought I'd share a few verses from the New Testament about giving thanks:

"...and here must be no filthiness and silly talk or coarse jesting,
which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks."
Ephesians 5:4

"...always giving thanks for all things
in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father."
Ephesians 5:20

"Be anxious for nothing,
but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."
Philippians 4:6

"...joyously giving thanks to the Father,
who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light"
Colossians 1:12

"And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks through Him to God the Father"
Colossians 3:17

"Devote yourselves to prayer,
keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving"
Colossians 4:2

"....in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus"
1 Thessalonians 5:18

"First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers,
petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men"
1 Timothy 2:1

"Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God,
that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name"
Hebrews 13:5

Here are some Old Testament ones too:

"It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

And to sing praises to Thy name, O Most High;

To declare Thy lovingkindness in the morning,

And Thy faithfulness by night."
Psalm 92:1-2

"O come let us sing for joy to the Lord;

Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving;

Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,

And a great King above all gods."
Psalm 95:1-3

Like you, I've been on an ongoing 'cheerfulness' campaign. Those verses really do remind us that being happy must be a simpler matter than so many of us make it out to be. Just being thankful for all we have (and most of us have plenty) and meaning it must be the best antidote to the blues.
Some friends of mine who've been on mission trips to third world countries have commented on the surprising levels of cheerfulness and upbeat attitudes found in remote villages they visited. Nothing like the depression that fills the western world, these people truly are happy over such simple things as their next meal. Amazing!
I really like that quote by Abraham Lincoln too.
God Bless,
Paula
