Dec. 5, 2006 - Handwriting Hiccup

Posted in Handwriting

We have had some serious handwriting frustrations lately. Even with using the Handwriting without tears curriculum - a few tears have been shed. My little girl gets extremely upset if she thinks she can’t do something. She wants to get it right the first time and if she has any thought that it might not turn out "perfect" she starts to become agitated. Then, if she makes a mistake she becomes very upset. Time and again I have explained to her that she is learning. That she is expected to try her best but that with practice she will be able to do what seems difficult now.

After thinking it over I have decided that we are moving too fast when it comes to handwriting. We have been speeding right through her workbook but it seems that a little more review is necessary. I know that many people work on one letter for a whole week. I didn’t think we needed to do that since she could already write her uppercase letters well. But...the lowercase letters are proving to be a little more difficult. I taught her to write many letters last year without giving much thought to it. I taught her to write some lowercase letters differently because I was not really aware of other ways to do it.

Anyway.... to make a long story short, we are taking it slower. Our lessons are still only about 10 minutes long but we are repeating them for a number of days instead of moving on too quickly.

Sounds good, we have not started Handwriting just yet I think we will wait until next year. I know he is not ready yet.

Dec. 7, 2006 - I have a couple of perfectionists here

And we've had many discussions about the learning process and how I don't expect them to get it perfect every time. Still, THEY expect themselves to be perfect from the beginning. I've had to point out to them that even I don't do things perfectly every time and that if I fail, I just try again. My amazement is that they needed me to point out times I've made mistakes and had to try again. You'd think they would have noticed it just living with me!

Emma is a major perfectionist and we always have discussions about how she doesn't have to do anything right the first time. She shakes and gets anxious. The shaking is affected!

My girls hated to write in the outlines or tracing the dots. They would get so upset when they couldn't keep straight on the line! I had helped them quite a bit in the preschool years (holding my hand over theirs). I guess they were used to seeing it pretty perfect! Anyway, one thing I did was to write "I love you" in different styles. I also had Daddy and Mamaw write it too so they girls could see that the basic shape should be the same, but everyone has their own style of writing. That helped! We also looked at the different fonts on a computer to illustrate this point. This helped my oldest especially! BTW, my 2nd dd had terrible handwriting. I always blamed it on the fact that I started her younger than dd1 and maybe her motor skills weren't fully developed. This year we started cursive writing. Her letters are smaller, more evenly sized and she writes faster! Go figure. She was writing in print for something and the old missized letters spaced too far apart came right back! Isn't that weird!

So glad for your dds' success (and yours, teacher)! BTW when dd2 went to write on the b-day card for her sister whose b-day is today, she said, I forgot how to write in cursive! :0 I guess we had better do some copywork tomorrow! :)
