Jan. 24, 2007 - Celebrating Australia Day!

Posted in Australia Info

This Friday is Australia Day. We are celebrating by having a few homeschooling buddies over for an Australian lunch, a little lesson and a craft.  Wish you could join us.....

We will be dining on sausage rolls, carrots an apples; with Chocolate crackles for dessert. I’m also making Vegetable Pasties and a Pavlova- Yum!

Since the kids have already studied a little about Australia we will review the location and then move onto learning about the Koala.

Here are some of the links I have used for this Koala lesson:

Koala craft

Koala facts printout

Koala Factsheet (more in depth than the one above

Links to lots of kid friendly Australia information and activities

If you want to listen to the Australian National Anthem click here

Just for fun, here are the words to our National Anthem:

Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Last year we took a trip to Australia. We lined our chairs up in the dining room, strapped in and began our journey. Once we arrived, the children drew pictures of all that they saw. Each child "explored" a different area, then we all met again in Sydney and shared what we "saw". The children made post cards and sent them to their friends describing the experiences. It was one of our most wonderful unit studies. We did make some food, but I believe it was inferior, maybe we will do a little review with your recipes. Did you know that they do an annual dry boat race with men carrying the boats, legs through the bottoms. (I think somewhere around Ayers Rock). Have a great Australia Day! Sounds fun.

I have never heard of this! I think we will celebrate this on Sunday (a few days late, but I need some time to read up on this). Thanks for the links to all the fun recipes and activities! And for more information on what this is. I think the kids will really enjoy it! (And maybe next year, we can do it on time! LOL!!!) Blessings, Paula http://heartyworks.blogspot.com
