Jan. 30, 2007 - A little update
Posted in Australia Info

Yesterday was a “school” free day. I did teach my daughter that fever was her body’s way of fighting off the bad stuff. That counts
Anyway...she slept almost all day. It was strange. Her temperature was 103/104 all day long. I was so glad when she woke up this morning and it was back to normal. Yay.
We won’t be doing much today. I may read to her a little since she is not sleeping as much.
While it is quiet I wanted to give a quick update on our Australia day festivities. We had a great time and really enjoyed eating some good Aussie tucker!
Here is a picture of the chocolate crackles:

One of the little boys who came to celebrate with us was in love with everything I gave him to eat. Isn’t it fun to cook for someone who enjoys it?! Every time he ate something he said, “This is really good!” I told him I would cook for him any time :)
We did learn about the Koala as planned. They now know that a koala is NOT a bear but a marsupial. And that they are nocturnal. They eat eucalyptus leaves and bark. I actually happened to have some eucalyptus oil so we all smelled it. I love the smell of eucalyptus. It is so good for when you have a cold too.
Here is a picture of a koala from our last visit to Australia:

Just a wanted to give a little update. Maybe I will get back to some more “school”ish posts soon. Or then again, maybe not.
Have a great day,

Jan. 30, 2007 - Sickness is rough... |

I don't know which is worse, having them all sick at once or have them take turns and prolong the days I'm on sick duty.
Good call using the garlic poultice. I'm a big believer in natural remedies, especially the powers of garlic, honey and cider vinegar. You might also want to try Sambucol (elderberry extract) next time a sniffle comes on. It's very effective at fighting off colds and flu. I usually find it in natural foods stores.
Take Care and Stay Healthy,

| My son has always been very interested in Australia and is now doing a project for school, of course I'm searching for good info. and wondered if these choc. crackles are an Australian dessert and if so could I have the recipe? Maybe I could make them for his class. Just a thought. |

Here is a link to a recipe for Chocolate Crackles:

It is the one that looks most similar to my recipe with the American changes. One ingredient in the Australian recipe is "Copha", that I have never seen here. I substituted vegetable shortening and it worked fine. The recipe link above also substitutes shortening.
They are quite easy to make. My preschooler helps stir.
The kids should love them!

P.S. One other party snack that kids love is "Fairy Bread". It is simply white bread spread with margarine or butter and then topped with sprinkles (the ones you use to decorate cakes). This is a staple at kids birthday parties in Australia.
