Mar. 7, 2007 - Handwriting Revisited

Posted in Handwriting

A little while ago I wrote about our frustration with handwriting.   If you want to read that entry click here

I have never taught a child to write before so I don't know what I am doing!  We decided to leave the handwriting books alone for a while and go at a slower pace.   I checked out HigherUpandFurtherIn (my favorite blog) to see if Lindafay mentioned anything regarding handwriting for Kindergarten.  I found that she recommended children practice one letter a week on unlined paper.  And that is what we did.

It didn't take long for our frustration to decrease.  We also saw improvement right away.  After a while we began to practice more than one letter at a time because we were reviewing the ones she had already "mastered".  Next she wanted to draw a line and write on it, so we did that.  It helped with knowing where the lower case letters that continue below the line should be.  I probably would not have moved onto this if she had not been showing much improvement.

My daughter has also been spending a lot of time making books and writing letters.  Sometimes asking me how to spell words, other times inventing her own spelling.  I'm quite sure she made at least one hundred valentines.

Last week we began some copywork.  She is copying the poem, The Swing,  by Robert Louis Stevenson which is also being memorized this term.  Each day she writes one line.  I sit with her and help with where to start the letters and such.  I am thrilled with the improvement and am enjoying less stress over handwriting!

Here is a picture from this morning:

I don't really know what to expect from a kindergartener, but I am pleased with this.

That's my plan, too-- when I begin with Ella in the fall... to work on one letter at a time (or one word)... and practice quality, not quantity! I'm glad to know it's working! :)

I think this is wonderful for a kindergartner!!! We are also learning to write our letters and it does get easier but I found myself getting frustrated often at first LOL I think that is a great suggestion to start on unlined paper just so they can get the feel of it!

Hope your doing well!

Hugs and Blessings,
Tiany

Stacy, It's always good to hear how people have figured out answers to their problems. I really enjoyed your post. I would say your daughter is doing very well.

I was just thinking this week of how Lindafay has helped me in our homeschool. She's a great blessing to many I believe.
