Jun. 21, 2007 - Non-Petroleum Jelly

Posted in Homemaking

A few days ago we made non-petroleum jelly. It works like vaseline but it better for you!

First we took a trip to the local honey factory and bought some beeswax.  That, in itself, was great fun!

Here is a picture of the beeswax we bought:

Next, we melted the beeswax enough to get 1/4 cup for our "recipe":

EDIT: We now grate the beeswax and measure before melting.

Added 1 cup light olive oil (You can use any oil you like) and stirred it up:

Pour into jar to cool:

We had fun watching the mixture harden from the bottom up:

And there you have it, homemade, non-petroleum jelly.  Good for those dry patches!

I originally found the recipe at http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,1099.0.html

RachelsSupply.com has some other interesting recipes for homemade beeswax products (I'm planning to make lotion and antiseptic balm)

I might try that if I can find beeswax. I have question, what consistency is your homemade laundry detergent. I have been making my own for a while and it is very solid. Am I doing something wrong, or is that how it is?
Thanks,
Melissa

You are so awesome!! Now that I have made the dishwashing detergent, I gotta go make myself some non petroleum jelly! I just blogged about the dishwashing detergent, and left the recipe for everyone on my blog. It works really good, except it makes the dishes a little cloudy. But oh well, it works! Too cool Stacy!!!

Ah, so *here* is where I found this recipe! I've been looking for it because I couldn't remember where I'd seen it, and I didn't write it down. Thanks!

About Me

I am an Australian married to an American, currently living in the U.S.A. As a new homeschooling mum, I am learning how to follow God's words in Deut. 6:6-7: "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up."
