Aug. 24, 2007 - Cleaning the Kitchen Naturally

Posted in Healthy Home

This week we made a few new concoctions. I really love the idea of non-toxic cleaners for the kitchen. Most of what is cleaned in the kitchen is used for food preparation or consumption, so it makes sense to be careful.

Today I wanted to share a few natural cleaning tips for the kitchen that I tried this week:

The first is Homemade Dishwashing Soap.

I used the following recipe (It was found here along with some other homemade cleaning recipes):

1/4 cup grated soap
2 cups hot water
1/4 cup glycerin
½ teaspoon lemon essential oil

Combine grated soap and water in a pot and heat on stove. Stir until the soap is dissolved. Cool to lukewarm.

Stir in the essential oil and glycerin. Leave to cool. As it cools it will form a loose gel. Stir with a fork and break up the gel and then pour into a bottle (I used an old dishwashing soap container).

To use, squirt 3 teaspoonfuls into hot running water.

Next, Scouring Powder for the Sink

This one is not for extremely tough stains but is good when a light cleaning and freshening is needed.

Just mix up the following in a jar:

2 cups baking soda
A few teaspoon of ground cinnamon
3-6 drops of orange essential oil.

Sprinkle in the sink.  Let sit for a few minutes, scrub then rinse with water. It smells great.

The recipe is based on one I found in:
The Naturally Clean Home: 100 Safe and Easy Herbal Formulas for Non-Toxic Cleansers

Last of all, Cleaning the Cutting Board

I have heard that you can rub the cutting board with half a lemon....but that is just not very convenient.  Last week I found a new way in the book Clean House Clean Planet by Karen Logan.  Just rub the cutting board with salt and leave to sit for 5 to 10 minutes.  Then rinse with vinegar.  I tried it and it worked great.  I rubbed the salt in with bare hands and it exfoliated my hands too!

If you have any natural cleaning tips you would like to share, please feel free to add them in the comments section.

Hey Stacy-
I just posted on my laundry soap attempt today! I'm glad you'd posted here about it b/c that helped encourage me to try it. I'll be trying the dish soap now, too! :)

Thanks for the great post! I've been using vinegar and baking soda for about a dozen different cleaning needs in my home for a couple of years now. I was wondering about disinfecting, though. When I feel like I need to disinfect, I still break out the chemicals. Vinegr doesn't actually disinfect does it? I know it cleans well, but does it kill germs? Now I'm thinking of food preservation, and I guess pickling works for a reason. Hmm...I'll have to check this out more :) Thanks for the good thoughts!

Aug. 26, 2007 - Disinfecting

Hi JacciM,
I’ve asked the same question! In fact, I was so happy to read in Clean Home, Clean Planet that germs couldn’t survive the salt and vinegar wash on the cutting board.
Also, The Naturally Clean Home, mentioned above, has a great list of essential oils and their properties. Eucalyptus, Lemon, Lavender, Tea tree and Thyme are all listed as being antibiotic, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal. Pretty cool, huh?
You can make a disinfecting spray by filling a 16oz spray bottle with water, a few teaspoons of Castile soap and 20-30 drops of tea tree oil (full strength - not diluted by carrier oils). I am going to try it this week.
I have also read that borax is a good disinfectant and you can use a few teaspoons in a spray bottle with water and some essential oils.
I’ll let you know how it works after I try it. If you give it a try, please tell me how it works out.
Happy cleaning.
Stacy.

That's great! I'll have to head over to that website :) Thank you!

Have you ever tried Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day? It comes in various concentrates, is all natural, and fairly reasonably priced. Just wondering. I had a bottle in my hand the other day at the health food store and somehow forgot to take it to the checkout :0 Oh, dear. Thanks again for the info :)

Just wanted to let you know that I made the disinfecting spray this morning and it seems to work very well. It certainly smells clean in here...and my counters are sparkling!
