Paddle-to-the-Sea

This has been my daughter’s favorite book so far.  It teaches geography is story form.

A young boy from Nipigon country has learned that the snow near his home melts into a river which flows to the Great Lakes and eventually to the Sea.

He sets to carving a little Indian sitting in canoe and names him Paddle-to-the-Sea.  This book records the “Paddle person’s” journey and the many adventures he has along the way.

We usually read a few chapters once a week and then trace Paddle’s progress on our wall map.

I have caught my daughter sneaking this book to her room to see what will happen next!  Talk about loving learning.  Just what I was hoping for (not the sneaking part the loving to learn part).

I thoroughly enjoy reading this book to her.  Before now, my knowledge of the Great Lakes was non-existent.  After reading this book I can tell you all about these amazing lakes and which one flows into which.

Homeschooling is so much fun!  I would never have taken the time to learn this otherwise.  But it is nice to know it.

Learning about the world always points us back to the amazing God who created it.

Did you know that Lake Superior looks like a Wolf’s head?  Maybe you did....I grew up in Australia so most certainly didn’t know anything about it.

Yesterday we read about Paddle going over Niagara Falls.  My daughter said that she would like to go there.  I told her that maybe one day we would.  She replied, “No.  I actually HAVE TO!”

OK then.

We decided to take a look at Niagra Falls on the internet and found two great sites.  We must have spent at least half an hour looking at pictures and movies of Niagara.

This one
has a live cam and some beautiful photographs of the Falls.

If you go here you can listen to the sound of the water crashing.

I love the internet!

We loved this book too!
Do you know the trick for remembering which lake is which? Start with the lake farthest west and say Super Man Helps Every One. They are all there, in order. Superior Michigan Huron Erie Ontario. Neat trick!

Hey, Thanks for the info. We actually have this book but have not read it yet. I know what you mean about loving to homeschool because you to are learning so many things. I feel the same way. We are reading about Christopher Columbus and there were some things we read that I didn't know. I guess I should have paid more attention in school. Ha Ha Now I know we will have to get to this book this year. Thanks again.
