Jan. 25, 2008 - Show and Tell Friday - My Friend with Autism

Posted in Books

This week I wanted to share two books that are special to our family.

Because my sweet nephew suffers with autism I really wanted us to have a better understanding of what he goes through on a daily basis.  I want my kids to be compassionate, understanding and patient with him.

The following books help us do that.  In fact, the first book could be describing him in many ways.

I hope that more and more people will take the time to educate themselves about autism.  It is growing at an alarming rate.

It would be wonderful if everyone would read a little about it.  Perhaps that would help us all look with a different eye when we see a mother struggling with a 5 year old who is throwing a fit.  Perhaps we can lend a hand, or share a smile,  instead of thinking they have an undisciplined child (I'm not meaning to sound harsh - I am guilty too).

I don't pretend to know what my sister-in-law goes through every day.  I know it's hard.  But with a little education, I can gain a tiny bit of perspective and therefore be more understanding.

So here are the books:

Thanks for sharing these resources. We have friends who has a child with autism and I also used to teach special ed with autistic children. I think everyone needs to be aware of how autism is growing and how it affects children.

I have a 'step brother' with Autism, and a 'nephew' with downs. They are special people.

I saw a show about the alarming rate of autism--in boys, especially. It's scary and sad. My sister struggles with her son--all kinds of stuff like aspergers, OCD, and it's such a strain on her and her family. Sometimes i've been guilty of thinking "if she'd only make him mind." Thanks for reminding us that sometimes it takes something different.
BTW, with his meds and all the help, my sis's little boy is making tremendous progress....

Bless you. You are a special person for recognizing the need to understand souls who are "different", but who have every right to be respected and loved.
