Jun. 28, 2008 - Homemade Belly Butter for Mama!

Posted in Homemade Body Products

This post will show you how to make a lovely cream for a pregnant mama's growing belly.  I recently made some for a few friends and it was very easy.  All you have to do is mix, melt and pour.

This recipe is based off of the Stretch Mark Cream in Natural Beauty at Home (a book I love!)

To make 4ounces (I divided this up into two 2 oz jars), you will need:

1/2 cup cocoa butter
2 Tablespoons wheat germ oil
2 teaspoons light sesame oil
2 teaspoons apricot kernel oil
2 teaspoons vitamin E oil
4 teaspoons grated beeswax
2 teaspoons vanilla extract (optional)

( I purchased most of my ingredients from Mountain Rose Herbs - a company I highly recommend)

Photobucket
In a heavy saucepan, mix all ingredients except vanilla extract.

Photobucket
Heat over low heat until the cocoa butter and beeswax have melted.

Photobucket
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

Photobucket
Let cool a little, then pour into two 2 oz glass jars or one 4 oz jar.
Leave lid off until product has cooled completely.

Photobucket
Cream will thicken as it cools.

Photobucket
Cap and add a label if desired.

To help skin remain soft and pliable rub a small amount onto stomach each day.

If you are able to obtain all of the ingredients, this is really an easy cream to make.  It probably took no more than 10 minutes.  It smells delicious and is extremely emollient, just the thing for a growing belly.

I've enjoyed catching up on your blogs (I seem to go a long time between visiting my friends!) I have always been interested in nutrition, even before I got married. But young adulthood, working, then marriage and working, all added up to a lot of fast food. We didn't make much money and ate poorly as a result. But things began to change after we moved to Oregon, 17 years ago. No more fast food - I went back to my nutrition-roots. I love to read about how to feed my family (and me!) better and have learned a lot. I remember reading about the trans fat issue long before it made headlines (in Prevention Magazine). Now they have been talking about high fructose corn syrup, another issue that I read about a long time ago. The trans fat is easy to eliminate but the high fructose issue is harder to eliminate. True, we buy quite a bit of organic but it's expensive (as you already know!) We do our best - that's all you can do, like you said.

I've been looking into natural products for my skin and make-up but I tend to be ultra sensitive to several products that I've tried. Frustrating! This Belly Butter you've made looks like it would smell yummy (if I had a sense of smell, of course!)

I encourage you to pursue your interests. Keeping Mom's brain active and healthy is important for the kids. And it's great for them to see you learning something new. Plus it will benefit your family's health.

Have a terrific week!
Kate

P.S. Thanks for all the interesting links - I'll check them out!

What a lovely idea to share. I can just see that on top of a baby shower gift. You have a lovely blog with so many different topics. (I found you with the random blog button.)

You make the coolest things, Stacy! Your children are fortunate to be having such a wonderful experience being brought up seeing you make things from scratch.
Thanks for sharing all the things you are making!
