Sep. 3, 2008 - Who goes first?

This post is part of Works For Me Wednesday - Backwards Edition. Be sure to visit and see if you can answer any pressing questions for the participants. Or, ask your own!
So here goes...you get to see my inexperienced mommyness....
You tell the kids they can watch a movie and before you know it out slips, "What would you like to watch?" It seemed harmless until they each have differing opinions about what movie is the best ever.
You make pancakes, one magically looks like a cave (don't ask me), they both want the special one...who gets it?
It would be lovely if all I heard was:
"After you"
..."No, after you"
"No after you, I insist."
Unfortunately, that's not happening! Unless you count the time I told them the first shall be last and the last shall be first. Then no one would go first!
I am teaching them to think of others, however, they still have a lot to learn. My kids are 7 and almost 4.
I'd like to know of some simple rules you may have in place to deal with who goes first or who gets to choose.
I figure if someone is insisting on "Me first", then they shouldn't get to go first.
Another idea is to have days of the week set for each child. I only have two so could assign one even and one odd. Then if anything comes up, just look at the calendar and see who's day it is.
It is also important to keep in mind that life is not fair and things can't always be divided evenly. I don't want to do that.....I could use some tips on dealing with these moments as they arise.
What do you do? |

It's simple. If they can't decide nicely then MOM decides! Lol.... When we play games it's always, always, always younger kid, older kid, Mom. Took care of that after our first attempt at playing a "real" game!

I have heard of the odd/even day idea. That could easily work with 2.
I reward my kids with chocolate chips when I see one of them doing something kind (acting sacrifically) - if they've done it from the goodness of their heart, not with the reward in mind. Sometimes someone will do something nice and ask for choc chips, to which I reply - "Not this time, but thank-you for being so kind and thoughtful. Keep up the good work and let me catch you doing good." |

Sep. 3, 2008 - odd/even |

| I have a 10 year old and a 7 year old. We do the odd even day thing for setting/clearing the table; sitting in the front seat (I know its not safe) and picking the music on the way to school. It works ok except for the months with 31 days because the odd kid gets two days in a row - life is hard! |

The lady at much church who teaches our MOMS ministry did the alternating thing. She did hers based on days of the week though- M, W, F for one and T,R,S for the other. Sundays mommy got to decide or they took turns- it varied as they got older.
Days of the week are easier to keep up with IMO. Every year they switched so that Saturdays would go to the other kid. |

I agree with the comment - when the kids can't decide nicely on their own, MOM decides. LOL I have done the "taking turns" and "assigned days" method since the first two were little. When there's something like a pancake that they both/all want, I pick a number between 1 and 10 and let them guess. It's not rocket science, but it usually works. ;~)
Blessings,

Sep. 4, 2008 - We have a Gopher |

| Basically my kids alternate being the gopher for the day. It is the gopher's job to help mom with various chores all day. The gopher in our house dries the dishes while mom washes, lets the dog out, goes and gets things, whatever small chores are within their abilities. The privelege is they get to do the choosing of movies, what to have for lunch, and whatever else would otherwise be argued about. I started this when my kids were 5 and 7 (I think, maybe it was 6 and 4), and soon I'm going to put my 3 1/2 yr old into the rotation. |

| I like your blog! It is great to see another mom who is training her children for the Lord! I have a few posts about obedience and child training too on my blog. |
