Apr. 3, 2008 - Frugal Friday - Dealing with Catalogs

Posted in Good stuff

Photobucket

Have you found that looking through catalogs is bad for your wallet?  Catalogs have a way of making you think you need things you didn't know existed!  (Okay - so the catalog is not doing it, you are, or rather - I am.  But you get the point.)

When I really began to buckle down and be aware of where our money was going, I started throwing away catalogs as soon as they arrived.  I also deleted sales emails.

It wasn't long before this felt extremely wasteful.  I wanted to cancel most of the catalogs that came to my mailbox, but really didn't want to call each and every one....who has the time?

Then...my mother-in-law emailed a link to a great little service that would cancel the catalogs for me.  It is:

Catalogchoice.org

It is a free service.  Their mission is to "reduce the number of repeat and unsolicited catalog mailings, and to promote the adoption of sustainable industry best practices."

Their motto: "Eliminate unwanted catalogs you receive.  Simplfiy your life and save natural resources."

Once you sign up you can browse the data base or search for a particular catalog you wish to cancel.  Once you find the offenders you may request they be canceled. They will do it for you!  Cool huh?

You can log in and check the status of your cancellations at any time.

Oh yeah, they do not sell, rent or otherwise share your contact details with anyone.

So why not get rid of the unwanted clutter and unnecessary temptation to spend money you don't have...cancel those catalogs today :)

Jan. 2, 2008 - Favorite Things

Posted in Good stuff

Tiany is having a 2nd Blogoversary Party over at her place. To attend you must list your favorite things. Just makes you want to start singing the Sound of Music, doesn't it?

Those who do will be entered into her giveaway - which is pretty nice bundle.   Click here to check it out.

Of course, my favorite things are my salvation, my family, hugging my kids and so on...but here are a few you can buy at the store:

(Clickable links are in Bold)

1.  Bath and Body Works  Like Butter Creamy Cleansing Bar
This soap is really luxurious - at least in my book. It is $5 for one bar, so it’s a rare treat and one that only comes when there is a super sale!

2.  Cashmina Sheets
I was lucky enough to receive a set of these super soft sheets as a gift.  They are extremely warm and cozy.

Photobucket

3.  Yogurt with walnuts and dried blueberries (may favorite snack)

4.  Sweet Orange Essential Oil
I use this in many of my homemade cleaning products.  It smells great.
I've also added it to a homemade salve (instructions to come).

5.  Herbal Tea
There is not much better than a warm cup of herbal tea.  It is great for calming a sweet tooth after a meal.  Also a wonderful way to unwind when feeling a little tense.

6.  Notebooks
I love it when the notebooks go on sale at Wal-Mart for 10 cents each.  Next time I'm buying 20!  I love to write lists and plan things on paper.  My kids love to draw in them, especially if they have one that belongs to them alone.  OK, next time I'm buying 30.

Happy Blogoversary Tiany!

Jan. 1, 2008 - Raising Godly Tomatoes Giveaway

Posted in Good stuff

Photobucket

The first time I stumbled across a link to Raising Godly Tomatoes, I was not sure what it was all about.  I clicked through that link and proceeded to spend the next 4 hours reading as much as possible.  I only stopped because the night was growing short.

Elizabeth Krueger has some wonderful parenting ideas.  Many I had never heard before.

She speaks in a very kind way, not talking down.  Rather, as one who has been there and is alongside you.

Tonight I discovered that she has put her advice in print.  I am extremely excited about this!

Even better...Elizabeth is giving away a copy through Tiany's blog.  Click here to enter.

Also, be sure to check out Tiany's Blogoversary Party.  It looks fun

Sep. 17, 2007 - Drawbacks to Mystery Shopping

Posted in Good stuff

Last week I wrote a little about Mystery Shopping. (Click here to read)

For the most part it has been fun and a good way to earn a little extra cash.

The last 3 days have presented me with a few problems that I wanted to make you aware of.

First, I have been asked to do some rather difficult assignments for very little pay. One job, which I declined, involved me going into a store and supervising employees for an hour or so. I was to give them directions on how to set up a particular display but not do any of the setting up myself! They pay was to be $8 for the hour!!!

Now, let me set up the display and get paid for it. But supervising employees who don’t know me at all...I can’t imagine. I don’t really understand why they need to bring in an outsider to do that job. I’m sure there are good reasons for it . None-the-less, it is surely worth a little more than $8.

Another job, to which I was actually assigned, asked me to call certain businesses and make inquiries. After the inquires were made I needed to report on them. "I can do that," I thought.

However, after receiving the paperwork, I was dismayed to find a script that I was to stick to. If I were to stick to the script I would be telling many lies. Lies about my family.  As a Christian, I can’t do it. My conscience won’t let me. (And all for the price of $2.00)

One could call it acting...but it is with the intention on deceiving. So, I had to tell them I wouldn’t do it. As you can imagine, they were not impressed!

I HAVE had some very positive Mystery shopping experiences. Others did not require lying and paid $25 and $45. They were interesting and fun. The only drawback (which was slight) to those assignments was the report writing.

Some shops require a simple questionnaire to be filled out. Others ask for a complete narrative of the experience. It took me a VERY long time to write out a narrative of an hour long experience including all the "he said..." "She said..." stuff.   You have to be careful not to miss particular points or you will not be paid.

When you take into account all the time put into the report in addition to driving to the location and conducting the shop, the pay may not be very much an hour.

I tried to write reports in the evenings when my kids were in bed. I was fairly successful in doing that. However, on more than one occasion my husband was going to bed before me. And that is saying something...he is the night owl!!

I did receive a 10 out of 10 score for my report.  Was it worth it?  I don't know.

I’m not giving up on Mystery shopping, just evaluating every offer on a case by case basis.

I don’t want to work a job. I want to stay home with my kids. I’m a homemaker and I take much pleasure and pride in being a homemaker.

There are many different ways to earn a little extra money. So far I have found it difficult to find any way to make extra money that doesn’t end up taking away from the family. I know people can do it. I just don’t think I’m one of those people. Even when I was doing Mary Kay a long time ago (before we had kids), it became time consuming. I want to be good at what I do and that takes time and effort.

We always need to be aware that when we say "Yes" to an opportunity we are saying "No" to something else. We can’t "have it all," as the world says. When I see those words I want to run!

If we are faithful Christians we really DO have it all. What could be better than eternity in heaven? I won’t give that up for anything!

Sep. 11, 2007 - Mystery Shopping!

Posted in Good stuff

I wanted to let my fellow homeschool mothers know about a fun way I have been making a little extra money....Mystery Shopping!!

Mystery Shopping is something I had heard of but never thought I would actually do. Well...I have and I’ve been paid for it!!

Some shops have been quick and easy, while others have taken some time. If you have good observation skills you might enjoy mystery shopping.

Below are three companies I know are legitimate:

MysteryShopper.net

Service Excellence Group

Datatron

Shadow Shopper has a very good database. I signed up for the free membership and actually had companies call or email me when they were in need of shoppers in my area.

Shadow Shopper also has an option in which you pay a small fee and get immediate email notification of mystery shopping jobs in your area. The ShadowShopper system filters the types of jobs you want according to preferences that you can change at any time. ( I believe I could receive credit for referrals to this service. If you decide to sign up I would really appreciate you putting tystacyk (at) hotmail (dot) com in the "who referred you" section)

Some of the shops I have completed include a flooring store, banks, and custom blinds.  I always learn something new and usually enjoy the experience.

Just thought I'd share....maybe you could be a Mystery Shopper too

Mar. 12, 2007 - CONTEST and important reminder!!

Posted in Good stuff

A sweet blogger by the name of Annie is having a contest.  She is giving away a video which shows you how to teach your little ones to swim at a very young age.

This topic is near and dear to her heart since her daughter suffered a near drowning incident.

It surprised me to find out:
  • In 2000, there were 3,482 unintentional drownings in the United States, an average of nine people per day.(U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  • Drowning is the second-leading cause of injury-related death among children under the age of 15. (U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  • An estimated 5,000 children ages 14 and under are hospitalized due to
unintentional drowning-related incidents each year; 15 percent die in the hospital and as many as 20 percent suffer severe, permanent neurological disability. (National Safety Council)Of all preschoolers who drown, 70 percent are in the care of one or both parents at the time of the drowning and 75 percent are missing from sight for five minutes or less. (Orange County, CA, Fire Authority)

Annie will give this video away once she receives 50 comments to her post.

Click here to read Annie's post and enter the contest.  And while you're there why not say a prayer for her daughter Izzy and the rest of the family.

Feb. 3, 2007 - Homeschool Resources Tag

Posted in Good stuff

Jugglingpaynes tagged me.....

1.  One Homeschool Book You Have Enjoyed
Homeschool Methods by Paul and Gena Suarez

2.  One Resource You Wouldn't Be Without
Lindafay's blog - higherupandfurtherin.blogspot.com

3.  One Resource You Wish You Had Never Bought
Handwriting Without Tears.  I do think this is a great curriculum and I have used  the teachers manual quite a bit.  But the child's workbook is not right for us at this stage.  Maybe later.  The lines are too small I think.  Thankfully it did not cost a lot of money.  And like I said, maybe later.  I do think they are great books...just not for us at  this time.  Quite a few tears where shed at our house.

4.  One Resource You Enjoyed Last (this) Year
The favorite for me this year has been reading chapter books together.  It has been so much fun to watch my daughter experience literature and use her imagination.  Some of our favorites have been:  The Boxcar Children, Wind in the willows, The Hundred Dresses.

5.  One Resource You Will Be Using Next Year
An art curriculum.  Not sure which yet: Artistic Pursuits or How Great Thou Art

6.   One Resource You Would Like To Buy
I would really love to have Educating the Wholehearted Child by Clay and Sally Clarkson
I'm also very interested in the new ebook from simplycharlottemason.com - Laying Down the Rails, A Charlotte Mason Habits Handbook

7.  One Resource You Wish Existed
Step-by-step instructions for how to communicate to MY child so that she will understand what I am saying

8.  One Homeschooling Catalog You Enjoy Reading
In the past I have enjoyed Sonlight  and Christian Book Distributors Homeschool Catalog (especially the reviews by Karen Andreola), but now I have put myself on somewhat of a  ban from catalogs - I want everything...and think I NEED it too.

9.  One Website You Use Regularly
I love reading what others are doing right here on HSB.   Reading the blogs of others has helped me learn SO much.  It also helps me feel less like the lone homeschool ranger!

10.   Tag Other  Homeschoolers
I'm not tagging anyone. I would love to hear from you if you want to share.  Just leave a comment.

About Me

I am an Australian married to an American, currently living in the U.S.A. As a new homeschooling mum, I am learning how to follow God's words in Deut. 6:6-7: "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up."
