Oct. 3, 2007 - Handwriting Help

Posted in Handwriting

Since my daughter is always writing notes and such I began to worry that she was actually reinforcing a few bad habits.  For example, her S’s are often backwards as are her 9's.

When we are working on handwriting together I always have her correct it.  However, she spends much of her free time writing and often hands me a note with a few backward letters.  This, of course, is not unusual for a six year old.  And I do enjoy her notes very much!

I feel concerned that it could present problems in the future.   Learning to write is one thing, learning to write differently is another.  Habits are hard to break.

I don’t want to discourage her writing in any way.  I do want her to learn to write correctly. So....

We decided to tape up the alphabet where she usually does her free writing.  She loved the idea.  I told her that it would be good to check and see if she has written the letters correctly and also good for reference if she was not sure about something.  It wasn’t a big deal and she thought it would be really handy.

It’s nothing fancy....just simple.

They are taped at eye level and she has already noticed a few mistakes and corrected them on her own.

This little area has become her special spot.

These pages were printed from Handwriting for Kids
I came across the website through a link on Lindafay's blog

The Handwriting for Kids website has some great tools.  You can actually hover the mouse over a letter and see an animation of how it is written (where to start etc).  They have practice pages for manuscript and cursive.  You can also print out lined paper of different sizes.

Handwriting is a skill our kids will use for a lifetime.  I really believe it is important to take the time to teach them well.

You may recall that we have had some handwriting struggles in the past.  I can honestly say that things are looking up!

Mar. 7, 2007 - Handwriting Revisited

Posted in Handwriting

A little while ago I wrote about our frustration with handwriting.   If you want to read that entry click here

I have never taught a child to write before so I don't know what I am doing!  We decided to leave the handwriting books alone for a while and go at a slower pace.   I checked out HigherUpandFurtherIn (my favorite blog) to see if Lindafay mentioned anything regarding handwriting for Kindergarten.  I found that she recommended children practice one letter a week on unlined paper.  And that is what we did.

It didn't take long for our frustration to decrease.  We also saw improvement right away.  After a while we began to practice more than one letter at a time because we were reviewing the ones she had already "mastered".  Next she wanted to draw a line and write on it, so we did that.  It helped with knowing where the lower case letters that continue below the line should be.  I probably would not have moved onto this if she had not been showing much improvement.

My daughter has also been spending a lot of time making books and writing letters.  Sometimes asking me how to spell words, other times inventing her own spelling.  I'm quite sure she made at least one hundred valentines.

Last week we began some copywork.  She is copying the poem, The Swing,  by Robert Louis Stevenson which is also being memorized this term.  Each day she writes one line.  I sit with her and help with where to start the letters and such.  I am thrilled with the improvement and am enjoying less stress over handwriting!

Here is a picture from this morning:

I don't really know what to expect from a kindergartener, but I am pleased with this.

Dec. 5, 2006 - Handwriting Hiccup

Posted in Handwriting

We have had some serious handwriting frustrations lately. Even with using the Handwriting without tears curriculum - a few tears have been shed. My little girl gets extremely upset if she thinks she can’t do something. She wants to get it right the first time and if she has any thought that it might not turn out "perfect" she starts to become agitated. Then, if she makes a mistake she becomes very upset. Time and again I have explained to her that she is learning. That she is expected to try her best but that with practice she will be able to do what seems difficult now.

After thinking it over I have decided that we are moving too fast when it comes to handwriting. We have been speeding right through her workbook but it seems that a little more review is necessary. I know that many people work on one letter for a whole week. I didn’t think we needed to do that since she could already write her uppercase letters well. But...the lowercase letters are proving to be a little more difficult. I taught her to write many letters last year without giving much thought to it. I taught her to write some lowercase letters differently because I was not really aware of other ways to do it.

Anyway.... to make a long story short, we are taking it slower. Our lessons are still only about 10 minutes long but we are repeating them for a number of days instead of moving on too quickly.
