Art in the Park ~ Chainsaw Carvings

Posted in Art Appreciation

art in park

Today was the annual Art in the Park event in our hometown and it's always lots of fun :) There is live music, face painting, lunch, craft vendors and of course the main highlight... the chainsaw carvers!! There were three of them this weekend and when we arrived just after lunch they were in full swing. I just loved the carving above with its big rock cod fish swimming around the mountain of rocks. It's amazing that this carving started with a giant cedar log and was transformed into a fantastic statue all with the use of a chainsaw!

Bears are a very popular animal to carve and this one is looking really great.

There's much more to it than just wildly carving away at a log to! This fellow is actually consulting a book with a photo of a bear and using it to mark his next chainsaw cuts :)

Another amazing carving of a river otter.

Just look at the detail in the work. He's using his chainsaw to define the otter's fur. You've got to be awful careful, one slip of those spinning teeth and you might cut off a vital part of your sculpture!

This mother wolf and her pups was one of many carvings that were on site today and available for purchase. They cost a pretty penny but wouldn't you just love one of them in your yard?!

art in park

This is one of the chainsaw carvings done in previous years. We love to wander through the park and check out all of the older carvings :) Campbell River also has a really great chainsaw carving competition that takes place around Canada Day and there are TONS of carvers to watch work. After it is all finished the carvings are placed around the city. It's fun to come across them in different spots throughout the year :)

His Masterpiece is Complete!

K's tug painting

My son started this painting of his dad's tug boat and some of the other company tugs a little over a month ago and since then there has been an empty hook in our family room awaiting its arrival. Well the day has finally come and his dad is so proud of it :) It just happened that today hubby was going to be stopping in at the wharf to refuel his tug and get supplies so K got to show him the completed painting :)

 K's tug painting

Above is the original pencil drawing he made from a photo. In a couple of weeks our town is hosting its annual Garden Tour and quite often some of the homes will display quilts or artistic works done by locals and we are going to exhibit K's paintings in my mom's garden as she is part of the tour *grin*. He has studied Frida Kahlo, Leonardo Da vinci, Henri Matisse, & Dr. Suess so far, copying some of their most famous paintings and learning about their lives. I think it will be fun for him since he's only 10 and to be able to share some of his new found knowledge about the arts will be great. Plus you know those older ladies will just love it! LOL.

Silk Screened T-shirt

Posted in Art Appreciation

When the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.

Leonardo Da Vinci

K has been taking art lessons at the 4 Cats Art Academy and it has been great!! He loves it :) So far they have had a chance to do self portraits, still life, paper mache art, clay, and this week they learned how to silk screen their own t-shirts. All I can say is can I go!? I would love to learn how to silk screen. It's actually on my lists of courses to do *grin*.

Blessings,

Homeschool Art Pro-D Day ~ Lino Block Printing

Posted in Art Appreciation

Even homeschool moms need to take a Proffessional Development Day once in a while *grin*. Well yesterday our school's art teacher aka 'me'  travelled to Quadra Island to take part in a day class with an amazing artist, Richard Calver, and get a crash course in the basics of block printing. I've ran across some really cool lino block prints done by my favorite artists and I have wanted to give it a try for some time, so when the chance arose to be able to learn how, I was there!

Our pre-class homework was to come up with a simple 3.75 x 5 inch drawing that could be printed in 4 different colors. I love Japanese family crests and the above tree trunk is similar to some of them and then I thought that it would be neat to make it with three circular tree tops joining together like a family tree :) And there you have my simple drawing all ready for the first printing.

Unfortunately there just wasn't enough time for us to make four different blocks for each stage of printing, so we used our one block cutting away sections of it each time before we reprinted it with a new color.

Until all that was left was my tree trunk and border :) I actually like the trunk all by itself to and did a bunch of black and white prints of just it to *grin*.

This is one of my final prints. I did 6 in total plus one on fabric to see how that worked out. It's a very limited edition. LOL. We experimented with different amounts of pressure to see how the colors would blend together. Above I used a lighter touch on the leaf area so that the yellow would show through the greens and browns making it look more like a fall tree, while keeping the trunk of it solid colored :)

All in all it was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to trying more! K is going to really enjoy learning this as well. See, it really was a Pro D Day.... I'm going to share what I learned. *grin*

Blessings,

Fun Mixing Primary Colors

Posted in Art Appreciation

I picked up this really cute book at the library called Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. It's a fun little story about 3 mice that play in some paint pots and learn about mixing colors :)

It was perfect timing because I had also ran across a great way to learn about color theory over at Make & Takes using ziploc bags for mixing colors inside. A fabulous no mess idea!! So we gathered up our 3 primary colors: red, yellow and blue, a couple of ziploc bags and of course the camera :)

It turned out great. L smooshed the ziploc bags around to blend the two dots of paint and we ended up with a beautiful display of what each of the primary colors mixed together created.

Blue and red makes purple

and yellow and red of course creates orange :)

Now that we have learned what secondary colors can be made from the primary colors I think we'll move on to what tertiary colors can be created from them :) Fun!!

Blessings,

~About Me~

Hello from Canada! I am a homeschooling mom to 3 very rambunctious children ages 10, 6 & 3 years old while holding down the fort as tug boat captain 'Dad' sails the seven seas *grin*. We're located on 40 acres in a tiny rural community in beautiful British Columbia and this is my quirky journal about our homeschool journey, running my home based business 'RosyUndPosy' making 'Eco Friendly Bags 4 Green Living', and everyday life home on the farm. Hope you enjoy your visit :)
