Our Garden

Posted in Life on the farm

Our Broccoli

We are enjoying our garden so much this summer and what makes it extra special for the kids this year is that they did ALL the planting!! My oldest son K is 10 and wanted to spearhead the task as being garden manager this year *grin*. Of course there were no complaints from me! LOL. So he did all the work and the smaller two helped with planting and some weeding as well.

Fresh Broccoli

Here's one of the mammoth broccoli heads that we have been enjoying for dinner every night. They are so sweet and tender.... just like candy :) Nobody can be a vegetable hater when it comes right out of the soil in your own backyard. The difference in taste is immeasurable
compared to what we pick up at the grocery stores and children are so much more eager to eat something they had a hand in growing *grin*.

Lettuce

We haven't been able to keep up with the butter crunch lettuce we planted. It's growing much to quickly for us, but if you look closely you can see that the pesky bugs have been enjoying it by all of the little nibbles they have made in the leaves!

Cabbage

Our cabbage is just starting to ball up now and form little mini heads and the beans are flowering but for some reason I don't have photos of those or the carrots & turnips yet :)

How's your garden growing this year?

Ayrshire calf 'Bee'

Say hello the 'Bee' :) The kids and I took a trip down island yesterday to pick up a couple of little calves and they are the sweetest little things. They're Ayrshires, a good hardy Scottish breed and I am so in love with this ones cute little doe eyes *grin*. Yeah, I know all babies are cute but we just love cows around here with their whiskery noses and inquisitive nature :)

A New Home

The fellow we bought them from had named the above one Bee because apparently when he was born he had huge bugged out eyes that reminded him of a bee and the other little guy (don't have a photo) was named Appy because his coat looks like an Appaloosa but the kids changed his name to Bumble so now we have Bumble & Bee *grin*. They took to the trailer really well and were quite content to spend their time peaking through the crack between the doors while they waited to be unloaded. I don't think we've had a quieter pair before either, not a peep out of them! No mooing or bawling from the change, just happy to be piglets in all of the lush green grass that has sprung up finally :) I think we're going to make them into a nice 4H project for my oldest and he can spend time halter training them and learning how to care for them. Should be fun!

Snow Plow & More Snow

Posted in Life on the farm

This was the seen outside our house yesterday afternoon.... a whole lot of noise! You know how snow usually silences everything, well there isn't enough snow in the valley to cover the clatter that the cat makes *grin*. My dad decided that we had enough snow at a foot to start it up and plow out our driveways since neither of us has nice short ones that you could shovel by hand :)

So beautiful the snow is and yesterday I could actually escape the yard with my car if I had wanted. Not anymore. We awoke to another 7 inches of fresh snow this morning :) Dh is going to venture out with his big truck this afternoon and check on the boats, plus I'm hoping he'll go to the post office for us to. We've got a parcel down there and I'm crossing my fingers that it's one of the kids' swap packages we are waiting for. It would be great if one of them made it before Christmas since it is a Christmas book and goodie swap *grin*. I'll share photos later if that is what we get :)

First Big Snowfall Of The Season

Posted in Life on the farm

Today we awoke to our first big snowfall of the winter season, roughly about 7 inches of snow :) Wonderful light and fluffy snow which isn't always the norm for here. We usually get heavy wet snow so this is a treat! The kids were super excited to get outside and play and K even shoveled paths from the back door to the chicken pen and around to the woodshed and more. He's not quite as enthusiastic about shoveling when it's heavy, wet snow but today we couldn't get him to stop and come in for lunch even *grin*.

After lunch we decided to venture out and go to the post office so I could get all of my Christmas cards mailed. Last year I never got them done so I really wanted to finish my Christmas letter and mail it this time around and I'm happy to say I was successful and they are all on their way to family and friends :)

It was a beautiful ride into the village through the snow covered trees and mountains.

And the icing on the 'snow cone' was this view from the harbor. It was absolutely breathtaking. The photo just doesn't do it justice! They're calling for another 6 or 7 inches again tonight but so far the sky is clear and the mercury is dipping well below freezing so I don't think we'll be getting any. Maybe tomorrow :)

Escapees

Posted in Life on the farm

We woke up to a group of escapees this morning! The girls had flew the coop, literally *grin* My mom actually noticed them first and called down to us to let us know that they were roaming around underneath the apple trees. I guess they really wanted some fresh grubs :)

K headed out with the feed pail and shook it around while calling them and being the good little girls they are they followed him right back to their house :) They just can't resist coming to check out what you bring to them no matter what it is *grin*.

Dh just got home tonight so it'll be nice to have him around for a couple of days before he heads off to work again. Mama can have a little down time! LOL.

Oh look!

My little friends are back : )

I was sitting here catching up on my blog reading when I heard this scratching at the window and three of them were sitting on the lip of the big picture window in our family room. They must have been looking for bugs because they went one by one down the entire length searching the tract for things with their beaks. I'm going to have to fill the feeders again. I had left them empty for the summer since all the little birdies disappeared once the weather turned so nice :)

I'm all for airconditioning but this is a little extreme!

Posted in Life on the farm

Today while we were in town for riding lessons and a playdate something absolutely awful happened. The passenger side window in our car fell off the track and slid down inside the door!

My sister was with us and she went to put down the window for a minute and it was about half way down and all of a sudden it just went CRASH!!! I was driving and I jumped in my seat it was so loud. I didn't know what to do. There we were in the supermarket parking lot and I'm going oh no, oh no what am I going to do.... I'm an hour from home and I don't have anyone to call and I've got all three children in the back seat : (

So off I ran into the store and got some large clear garbage bags and some packing tape. By now of course it was pouring down rain and there I am outside the car trying to shut the bag inside the door and then tape it to the frame of the window. Well we succeeded in getting it closed off but I wasn't sure if it was going to hold for the long drive home and 90 km/h.
We had a couple more stops to make around town and then we dropped my sister off at her house and started our trek home.

Well we only made it 10 minutes down the road and the plastic started to let loose and flap so loudly that I was seriously worried that the noise level was going to cause ear damage to the kids! It was like standing next to a chainsaw. So over we pulled into a rest area and I ripped the plastic off of the window and prepared the kiddies for a blustery ride home. I tied on Baby M's hat so that he couldn't pull it off and tucked his blanket around him tightly right up to his neck and then I put any extra baby blankets and receiving cloths around K and L and then gave them my coat to pull over their heads and hide underneath to shield them from the wind and off we went again this time with the window wide open.

Thankfully the rain had stopped so it wasn't pouring in the window but boy was it cold even with the heater cranked up on high. Just before we reached home we ended up in a road block to top it all off. There I am freezing in a short sleeved t-shirt, the kids hiding under a coat and missing one window. Grin. Now the officer must have thought we were strange but luckily he just checked my license and sent us on our way. Phew.

DH wasn't very happy to see what had happened when we arrived home and he managed to get the door panel pried off of the door and the window tied up with bailing twine for now. Apparently some little plastic clip inside the door broke and that is why the window fell. So tomorrow morning he is going to run into town to the dealership and get the part so he can fix it. Thank goodness it has warmed up from the -10 degree weather we were having or we might have been a couple of icicles by the time we made it home this evening : )

Stocked up & Snowed in

Posted in Life on the farm

Well it's snowing again and I don't think I will be going into the next town for groceries tomorrow like planned.

It was my moms 50th birthday today and we had all gone over to my sisters today where we had set up a big surprise birthday bash for her. We spent the entire day there just returning home this evening around 8pm. Well, on the way home the snow began to fly : ( We were not too far from home but I still wasn't looking forward to the journey home in a blizzard.

As we climbed the hill going home it began to get thicker and deeper until the road began to disappear all together. Luckily there was a truck in front of us to follow. Funny how those red tail lights are sort of comforting to see. Hopefully they were paying attention to my headlights just in case the inevitable happened and we slipped off the road! Along the way we came upon a couple of vehicles that had landed in the ditch and were waiting for tow trucks but luckily it didn't look like anyone had been injured and we made it home safely. My hands were a little stiff from white knuckling the steering wheel most of the way home but I can live with stiff fingers : )

The last snowstorm caught me a little off guard and I wasn't as stocked up on some of the basics that I always need on hand. I really should have known better but I guess I wasn't thinking ahead : ( I wasn't able to get out of the driveway for 2 days because the plows were so busy they couldn't get down the side roads and when I finally could and ventured to our very small and limited grocery store they didn't have some of the supplies I needed. This time I'm on the ball. Last week when we got into town I got a bunch of extra diapers and other baby supplies, some extra jugs of milk and froze them in the freezer, and a bunch of other staples. Boy am I glad I did!
Wonder how long it'll take them to plow us out this time : )

HOORAY!!! The lights are back on : )

Posted in Life on the farm

I'm so happy the lights have finally come back on! We are experiencing another fantastic windstorm but unfortunately a side effect of that is numerous power outages. This time we were without electricity for about 30 hours. I don't mind a little time in the dark but I am very thankful that it is over : )

It has been raining so hard that it melted the huge amount of snow that we had left and caused water to start rising in our basement. UGH. I thought we were done with the flooding season but apparently not. Our bottom field was completely submerged yesterday and I was afraid it was really going to come high but luckily we had a lull in the weather and it was just enough to let the waters recede enough. We due for another blast of it tonight so it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Blessings,

Time change & Wild weather

Posted in Life on the farm

Well its only 7:30 am and so far this morning I have already lit the fire, washed two loads of laundry and started breakfast. All courtesy of the time change! I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not? It's always great to get a jump on the chores but K and L were ready to roll at 6am and that's a wee bit early for me : ) I'm a bit of a night owl (grin). Hopefully we will go back to getting up at 7.

The weather has been really extreme here the last couple of days. Yesterday and last night it poured rain so hard you didn't dare go outside because you probably wouldn't even make it to the car without getting drenched. Then the wind started sometime in the middle of the night. I woke up around 2am to the crashing of the wind blowing the tree branches against the roof of the house.

The rain has stopped but the wind is still blowing. The house makes these strange creaks when it blows like this and the chimney whistles : ) I've filled all of the big pots full of water because there's a good chance that we will be losing our power sometime today and the pump to the well doesn't work if it goes out. K was all excited that the power might go out until he remembered that it is really dark at night and there won't be any light shining under his door for a nightlight : )

The sun looks like it might come out today though : )

Blessings,

BChsMamaof3

Goose on the loose

Posted in Life on the farm

This morning just as I got out of bed I noticed out the window that our 2 geese were loose. Oh no. It would have been okay but the male named Tom is quite aggressive and my mom has a B&B right next door and oh wouldn't that be a sight if one of the guests this morning decided to come down and have a look at the "pretty" geese. I can just see it..... the nice lady is trying to run while Tom beats her with his wings and bites at her legs with his beak. Even I'm a little scared of him sometimes and I hand raised him !!

So out I go still a little fuzzy eyed, hair all wild and I've got the broom for protection : ) Can you picture how I must have looked? Actually it wasn't all that bad. By the time I got out to them they just wanted to get back inside their fence. So I opened up the gate and sort of herded them in and everything was a success. I had a look at the fence and it looked like something had tried to get into the pen so I fixed that up and hopefully they won't be able to get out again. We have trouble with coons sometimes so maybe they're the culprit of the hole or maybe a dog? Not sure but I hope it stays away. Here's a picture of Tom.

Blessings.
