'A' 'B' See Meme ~ 'A' is for .....

Posted in Photo of the Day

'A' is for AIRTIME!!!

And big airtime at that *grin*. At the bottom of our sledding hill is a huge snowbank and the kids made their sled path head straight for it so that they would hit the bank shooting themselves straight up into the air and over!

Super fun. LOL.

'A' 'B' See Photo Meme

Posted in Photo of the Day

Since I'm a complete photo junky, I just had to join in on this photo meme *grin*. Over at the Homeschool Post aka HSB Awards blog they are starting a weekly/daily/hourly photo meme using the letters of the alphabet. All you need to do is snap a pic that matches up with an alphabet letter, post it on your blog with a little comment as many times a week as you like, and then on Fridays go over and sign mr. linky letting everyone know where to visit you :) Super easy and fun for the whole family! Below are the official rules & meme button you need to display on your blog. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone picks to represent the alphabet *grin*.
Blessings,

Here are the rules… be sure to post them when you join!

1. Post a photo for each letter of the alphabet of anything that starts with that letter.

2. Write a few short explanatory, quirky, or witty sentences about each photo you post.

3. Only post one photo at a time (the meme can take as long as you want - a month, three months, whatever… you aren’t being graded). You can link them later in a blog post so they are listed in order if you are the list-making type.

4. If you want to join the meme, sign the Mr. Linky and use the “A B See Photo-Meme” graphic in your sidebar. Link your graphic to this post and announce that you will be joining us.

5. When you post a photo, come by and add it to the weekly A B See linky that we’ll be posting on Foto Fridays for those who have some alphabetical photo to share. You can sign it each week as many times as you have posted photos - one time for each photo linked post. Make sure you link back to the HSBA on your posts, too - so others can come and join the linky.

Elk in the Field

Posted in Photo of the Day

As I awoke this morning the above herd of Elk were in the top field right behind our house. I couldn't get close enough to them though to get a good shot :(

They were real skittish and took off right away. All the better since they are a real menace. That corner of the field where they are exiting actually used to have a good fence..... not no more. Those silly things must have chests of steel because they just bulldoze right through it no matter how many times you fix it! At least the field is frozen now and they can't tear it up. That's a plus right?!

Have a great day,

Tug Work

Posted in Photo of the Day

We drove down to the wharf today to watch Dh working on his tug :) A couple of days back I had written about the camp barge that had sunk, well today Dh was helping them to unload it. They finally got all of the water pumped out of the compartments so that it would float again and they wanted to get all of the trailers off of it before they moved it again. I think that is the end of it though and it is going to be scrapped now which may be a good thing since it's in pretty bad shape!

Camp Barge Sinks

Posted in Photo of the Day

We had some excitement today! A camp barge that was sitting in the booming grounds sank. Not to long ago Dh had seen it at the head of Seymour Inlet and then they moved it here because they were logging locally but it wasn't being used. A fellow that we know was keeping an eye on it but unfortunately couldn't stop it from from taking on to much water. In the photo above it is actually sitting on the ocean floor and they have pushed it up toward the bank of the spit road so that it wouldn't go completely under. The barge was built in 1944.

Not all was lost though. Above is the other half of the camp barge being towed away. I'm not sure where they're going with it but hopefully it will stay afloat!

CAUTION ~ Goats on the Roof!

Posted in Photo of the Day

One of my fellow Canadian bloggers friends Molytail had a funny road sign on her blog of a caution sign involving a moose and a car which reminded me of my latest find when we visited the Coombs Country Market :) The above sticker is a humorous reminder of what could potentially happen to you if you stand to close the edge of the roof at the market *grin* Anyone that has been there before (Kathleen, Justine??) will know exactly what I'm talking about :) They have goats living on their roof! The roof is covered with sod and grass and in the summer time it is a fun attraction to go to the market and observe the goats while you slurp up an ice cream cone :)

Okay enough about goat droppings..... well my kids found it quite hilarious so hopefully you were at least slightly amused. *grin*

Beautiful Flowers

Posted in Photo of the Day

My mom stopped by the other day and surprised me with this beautiful bouquet of flowers from her garden :) It smells just as good as it looks to. *grin*

The kids and I spent a good portion of the afternoon today getting our unplugged project ready for tomorrow. I can't wait to share it with you, but you'll have to wait just a teeny tiny bit more! LOL. Dh phoned tonight to and might be able to come home for an evening. He's not to far up the coast from us and needs fuel so he might bring the tug in here to fuel up before he heads off for the next batch of sticks that need moving :) It'll be nice to have him home even if it for just a short visit!

The Super Quick Cleaner Upper

Posted in Photo of the Day

How do you clean the child that insists on rubbing their dinner crumbs from one end of their body to the other?? Why with the trusty rusty vacuum of course! LOL.

This kid will never cease to amaze me. He actually enjoys being vacuumed and I mean no hesitation at all about having it suck up his clothing or hair *grin*. Most children run screaming from it, jumping onto furniture and staying well away but not Baby M. He actually runs towards it! Is it because he's the 3rd child? Do they just get wackier the more you have? Maybe we should stop right now and not even entertain the thought of having another! LOL.

Scuba Boots ~ Have you got your pair??

Posted in Photo of the Day

Who ever said that rubber boots were only for keeping your feet dry!?
Obviously Baby M was absent when we went over that concept! LOL. He successfully turned his into 'scuba boots' this afternoon while visiting the beach. Not even the heavy weight of water sogged boots or the super cold temperature of the ocean water couldn't slow down my little water bug!

Have water..... will splash!

Rain... Rain... Glorious Rain

Posted in Photo of the Day

It poured rain today... glorious cool rain. *grin* It has been hot and sunny here for what seems like forever, but I am so enjoying this cooler weather! It actually feels like fall which I hate to admit but am looking forward to :) Is it wrong to wish for frost and snow? LOL. I'm a winter lover, sorry all you sun baked beans.

We did a bunch of catch up chores today. By the pile of laundry that was waiting for me in the laundry room today you'd think I never ever did any laundry around here! The kids played a bunch of board games and worked out some of their math skills in the afternoon and K finally picked up his needlework again :) He didn't want me to take a photo of it yet to show you since it isn't quite finished :) I've got to pick up some blue yarn for the sky next trip to town, but the ship is finished and it is looking pretty good. We're going to have to frame it up so that he can hang it in his bedroom I think.

Painting & Playing

Posted in Photo of the Day

The other day the kids and I collected flowers and made some really fun painted flower prints and when they were done it was time for some creative painting :) K made tractors and trucks, L even made a truck! I thought that she would draw more girly things like ponies, fairies or even a flower :)

She finally gave in to mama's pleading for a pretty flower to hang on the fridge *grin*

And K decided to make a pyramid. Me, well I was paint palette washing duty :)

Bet you never thought of using the kiddy pool as a giant wash tub! LOL It was need of a good scrub anyways and the kids got a kick out of it :)

Lunch at Home :)

Posted in Photo of the Day

We had a super quiet day at home today. My mom had guests at the B&B and then she was having a couple of the businesses over to do some networking with them so the kids and I were home alone for lunch today! *gasp* Oh no, home for lunch! LOL. Doesn't that just sound awful? We always pack our lunch and eat with Omi and Opa each afternoon so it's super odd to have lunch alone :)

We caught up with them later in the evening and had a nice stroll to the pond, while the kids rode their bikes and ran around. On the way back we went into the loft that my dad is working on and sat on the brand new balcony. It is so nice and big! Not a bad view either overlooking the fields. Maybe I'm a little biased though. *grin*

How was your Sunday afternoon?

Tribal Journeys 2008 ~ Paddle to Quw'utsun

Posted in Photo of the Day

Last Saturday there were 13 First Nations canoes and over 130 paddlers that visited our little community as part of the Tribal Journeys 2008 journey to Cowichan Bay. Their trip started with their ocean going traditional cedar dugout canoes leaving Bella Coola on July 8th, and some of the canoes came from as far away as Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and the Arctic! As the paddlers stop at each community along the way they pick up more canoes to join their journey to the North American Indigenous Games in Duncan, August 3rd - 10th. By the time they reach their destination of Quw'utsun on July 28th, they will have grown in numbers to nearly 100 canoes!

Unfortunately we weren't home when they arrived :( So I didn't get to see them paddle in but I did get some photos of their canoes and the awesome artwork on them! You have to check out this flikr group to see recent photos of the some of the paddlers in their canoes and more great photos like the one of the 2 children in their traditional dress. So cute!! And this is a really nice map showing the route that all of the canoes are taking :)

In search of the perfect campsite ~ Mohun Lake

Posted in Photo of the Day

We're going to be taking a little holiday this summer and Dh has been trying to find us just the right camping spot that will keep all of us happy. Sand and water, maybe a little bit of grass, not to far from town or more specifically not a million miles from civilization! Did I ever tell you where we honeymooned? *grin*

Well this time our detour took us about 20 minutes out on the logging road to Mohun Lake in the desert heat and flying dust :) But the view of the lake was like a diamond in the rough! Look at the absolutely stunning view of Mohun that we got to glimpse from the road into the lake.

And the densely treed lane into the area is truly beautiful to :) There were portions of it that were quite narrow though and being the overthinker in the family I questioned Dh as to how we would ever pass another camper with our 23 foot travel trailer in tow behind us! Of course I got the manly answer of don't worry so much, we'll make it one piece. *grin*

All in all the views and the journey were nice but we weren't quite sure about the sites and the boat launch area that someone had said was fantastic was so so. I think that Dh was a little disappointed to since this was nice and close to home but he had a very different picture in his mind :) The quest continues....

Bear Trap Success ~ Goodbye Dennis the Menis

Posted in Photo of the Day

We've been watching the bear trap like hawks. We didn't want to miss Dennis the Menis coming back :) It took a couple of hours but he finally showed up! You would think that he would go straight after the food since he's been searching for it in full force but he was quite cautious.

He circled the cage quite a few times, even ran away from it once and then decided that he needed to get a much closer look at it *grin* climbing right up on it licking at some of the syrup that the conservation officer had poured on it :) You can see that he was quite tall!

That's it! Go on in :) Nope, he decided that he just wasn't falling for it and went right out again! I actually thought that he was going to eat all of the bate and then take off again, but he went in once more to check out the bucket of sardines that was hanging on the trip latch and that did it. As he pulled at it to see what was inside the latch let go and the door slammed behind him. He didn't even fight it, instead he sniffed around and fiddled with the door for a bit and then resigned to laying down and waiting :) See he really wasn't that bad after all, or is he?

I got a couple of little videos of Dennis the Menis in the trap for the kids and for the most part he is really sedate but watch and see just how quick he can turn!! Turn up your volume to high so that you can hear him! The claws on his paws were close to 2 inches long so I'll leave it to your imagination just what power and destruction he holds in them, he could snap his jaws together really loudly to!

Goodbye Dennis the Menis :) We'll miss you.... sort of. *grin*

The Bear Trap Is Set!

Posted in Photo of the Day

After the conservation officer relocated the bear he had trapped the night before he returned with the now empty trap so that he could set it up in hopes of catching our bear, Dennis the Menis. He parked it right underneath the apple tree where his favorite napping spot is not even 15 feet from the house, right outside of our bedroom windows :)

He then preceded to set up a bear friendly buffet. *grin* Apparently you've got to feed them right!! He got a smorgy of sardine sandwiches, peanut butter, chocolate and pancake syrup and some more sticky sweet treats :)

The final touch was the Hansel & Gretel type bread trail leading away from the trap to his napping spot, laced with even more chocolate syrup and pancake syrup. LOL. If that doesn't call him over I don't know what will :)

This is a homeschooler's dream come true!! Minus the looking in my windows portion of his visits. *grin* First we got to watch Dennis the Menis doing his thing searching for food, doing his daily activities, digging up roots and plants to eat, and grazing in the fields and now we get to observe him as he follows the scent of food straight to our trap *grin* Now we wait..... next we get an up close and personal interview with 'Dennis'. *grin*

Bear Bangers .... Nice but not manditory :)

Posted in Photo of the Day

Who said you need bear bangers and air horns to spook a bear!? Give one mad mama a couple of frying pans and let her loose! *grin*

Dennis the Menis was at the chicken pen again so I flew into action grabbing whatever I could get my hands on out of the pot cupboard and ran out the door. No hesitation this time... I've had it! I slammed the pots together at such a force I wrecked the one pan. The bottom of it as you can see above is now bubbled upward as high as the top rim of the pan! LOL. There I am smashing a crashing, my moms yelling from next door, "Is he back??" and I'm chasing the bear. Literally, I flew after him with the pots banging above my head giving chase after him down the field.
*WARNING* Do not try this yourself!

The conservation officer showed up just after lunch today with the bear trap in tow behind him so that we could get a look at the one he had caught last night thinking that it was our bear. It wasn't of course but he did say it was one of the meanest bears he had encountered! Maybe that's the one that has been digging up and chewing holes in the water line up the mountain, bending trail signs and throwing my dad's chainsaw around like a chew toy. No kidding!

Here he is close up. Previously to taking this photo, I had been going in for a closer look to check the markings on him so that I could explain why he wasn't Dennis the Menis and he charged the steel mesh, blowing spit and boogers all over me as he clearly told me to 'back off'! After taking the officer around to see all of the damage and the window the bear had been pawing at he told us that he would be back with the trap so that he could catch Dennis the Menis. He's going to park it right outside all of our bedrooms where we had watched him napping the other day. This is super exciting!

Want to read more about our bear drama? Then check it out HERE & HERE :)

Dennis the Menis 'Strikes Again!'

Posted in Photo of the Day

GRRR!! That pesky bear was back again last night, and this time he was right outside the big picture window in my family room. There he was with one paw up to the window!! So immediately I made another call to the wildlife hotline because they said that I should update them every time I saw him to keep my complaint current. Of course we went over all the things that he would be coming for and livestock is the main reason right now because of the smell of their feed, but I can't stop feeding my animals so it's a bit of a catch 22. The one thing that he said that I should start looking into is electrifying all of the fencing which is easier said than done when they are not close to any electrical outlets :(

So he lodged another complaint and dispatched the RCMP *grin* Yup, I had the 'fuzz' show up last night. LOL. They thought that if they happened to run across him on their way over and as they drove around the property they would be able to turn on the lights and sirens and scare the living daylights out of him :) Guess what? They never saw him, but they did set a bear trap down the road and they caught one in it! I'm just waiting for the conservation officer to come and check out our property damage and show him a picture of our bear so that he can identify if it is the one he has.

My guess is it's not him though :( When I phoned up to my mom to tell her they caught one she said it wasn't Dennis the Menis because he's been grazing all morning in the field next door.

Bear, Bear.... GO AWAY!!!

Posted in Photo of the Day

Generally I love to see the bears, but this one is really trying my patience! He attacked the chicken yard again and has broken into the goose pen twice. *sigh* What once was a good sturdy fence is now stretched and broken and he has taken to napping in the garden outside our bedrooms. I really want him to move on but he has some sort of strange fixation on our house right now. He's circling around it all day long and he's not even startled by my yelling at him.

I phoned the Wildlife Conservation hotline and put in a report but they only have one guy for the entire north island, a ton of phone calls each day and guess what? He's just doing regular bear stuff *grin* Yup, I'm just going to have to put up with him until he tries something more dangerous I guess. Tomorrow I'm off to take all of the bird feeders down because they may be one of the reasons he's getting so close to the house and we haven't been giving any scraps to the animals so that there isn't any fresh food scent for him to come calling for. I guess I'll just cross my fingers he'll find someone else has a nice little cache of food for him! I spoke with Dh tonight and apparently when he went to work the other morning he had a chat with the neighbor down the road as he picked up his trash from his yard. I guess he forgot to put in his garbage can.

You see that cute little furry face up there!? That's Dennis the Menis. Guests at mom's B&B said every bear should have a name, well he's got one now *grin*

Bear Attack ~ ACK!!!!

Posted in Photo of the Day

The dog was going crazy out in his bed by the chicken yard a minute ago and I could hear the rooster squawking like he was dying!! From the house I can't see the chicken yard or their house so I was a little scared to go outside! We have our resident black bear here again right now and he is very owly so I wasn't going to rush out just in case I came face to face with him, but it finally quieted down and I just finished creeping out to find the fence torn down :(

Whatever it was (I'm assuming it was the bear) crashed through the corner of the pen taking the fence post and wire down with it and crushed another section to. Luckily I was able to pull the post back up and put it in the hole, so for tonight it is up enough but will need repair and Dh just left for work again :( All of the girls appear to be there still so it wasn't trying to eat them.

UPDATE: Just as I was finishing this post I heard terrible crashing out the front of the house towards the vacant property next door. There he was!! It was the bear. He's sooo early this year :( Usually he doesn't show up until the apples are half grown on the trees in the orchard. He's getting more brazen this year to by storming the yard in the daylight. Yesterday my mom watched him come down her garden path on the hillside garden so I guess I won't be letting the kids out alone during the daytime anymore, and I better stash the garbage can to. He LOVES my garbage can *grin* Found that out last year when my can disappeared and there was a trail of trash a mile long :) Hmmm, I'm not happy about this.

Blessings,
