Pen Friends
Posted in Pre-School
L has started writing letters to her new little friend from our weekly nature walks and it is so cute :) The above one is what we are taking with us today. She got K to draw a picture of her blowing out her birthday cake candles and then she put the little hello kitty stickers all around it. She even got really ambitious and wrote on it herself to! Looks like it may end up to be a great way to exercise our printing skills *grin*.

Simple Color Sorting Game
Posted in Pre-School
I really love all of the Montessori blogs and ideas that I have come across lately and have been jotting down ideas on a little notepad next to my computer :) I think I'm going to need some sort of filing system soon for all of my scribbled paper chunks scattered all around me! *grin* Baby M is close to 2 1/2 years old now and has just started to show some real interest in participating in learning activities if only for a minute or two, but it is so encouraging when he does and he is so pleased with himself to :)
The other day while K was sewing with yarn I thought that all of the short cut off pieces would be perfect for a little impromptu color sorting game. I put one of each colored string in front of Baby M and then as he pulled out an new string from the pile we put it in the right piles :) He did great at it! For about 2 minutes and then he made a giant ball with it. LOL. I put it away for another afternoon so we can try again :)

Letter and Number Recognition Practice
Posted in Pre-School
The other day we picked up super cute My Little Pony coloring book at the dollar store for L and inside of it were all sorts of mazes and word puzzles. I wasn't really thinking that she would do any of the word puzzles but she has taken to it like a duck to water! *grin*
It has actually turned out to be a great way for her to practice her letter and number recognition! We haven't officially started any Kindergarten stuff yet but I think that this might give her a little jump on it when we do start in another month :)

How do you teach the letter blend "sh"?
Posted in Pre-School
I have been using the book Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons with L and when we do some of the lessons it has become very noticeable to she cannot pronounce the "sh" letter blend instead it comes out as "ssss". For the life of me I can't get her to understand how to make the sound! Anyone have any tips or tricks that would help me explain it to her?

Learning ABC's with Stamps
Posted in Pre-School
I have been using the Letter of the Week program with L and we have been dabbling with the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons which she is really enjoying I might add, but she is having some difficulty with the writing aspect of it. She just doesn't have the coordination or the discipline yet to want to write the letters and that is fine by me since we are only doing preschool stuff and this is sort of an experiment still to see if she is actually going to grasp reading : )
I purchased from Staples some fun getting ready to write books that have her trace the dotted lines in straight, curved, and zigzag lines and they are the wipe off books so that she can do it over and over again which will help her to get the feel for writing but in the meantime to make it even more fun for her I found these great stamps. It is the entire set of 26 letters in both upper and lower case plus punctuation.

They are just the right size for her little hands and she is having fun stamping the letters as we learn them. Now there's no need to write them, she just has to be able to identify which letter she needs and stamp away! And as we learn more letters we can start to put them together into small words.
Another bonus to finding these stamps is now we have them for card making, scrapbooking, and whatever else we can dream up to use them
for : )

Week #1 of PRE-Letter of the Week
Posted in Pre-School
Last week I started the preparatory program for the Letter of the Week Curriculum by Brightly Beaming Resources with L who's 3. She has been showing a real interest in the alphabets and is able to count from 1-10 so I thought maybe she is ready for a little preschool program to get her started plus she pretends to do school with us every morning : )
We had some bulletin board border in a sparkly fish pattern full of bright colours so L decided that she would like to have it as her border around her weekly poster. So our first project was getting her poster board decorated up all pretty like : ) Then we had to clear a section of the wall so that she could have her own school space where we could hang her poster. It was very clear that K took up way to much of the schoolroom wall and she needed to claim some of it as her own!! So after we had rearranged some things she had her spot and was very happy : )
Each day we have added a new paper to our poster. This week we covered cows which we have been reading a cow storybook each day, the letter A, the number 1, squares, a new vocabulary word which was calf, and the hey diddle diddle nursery rhyme. Every morning as I hang a new picture on her chart she gets one that she gets to colour as well and she loves it. We have all of her coloured sheets hanging underneath the main poster so she can display her colouring expertise : )
The great thing is that now at the end of the week she remembers all of the parts of the chart!! and when we look at other things in different areas of the house or outside she is still able to identify them as one of the things that she learned this week which is great because she is definitely not just memorizing what she sees on the chart but actually remembering it.

Here is a picture of her weekly chart. I have just coloured her cow and calf pictures so far because she will be learning one new colour each week which I believe you add to your shape and I didn't want to confuse her with to many different colours all over the chart. I have stuck them to the poster board with that tacky putty that you can stick to paper or painted walls and then remove it easily and use it over and over again. That way we won't wreck our master poster : )
I just wanted to share a couple of links that I used that weren't part of the Brightly Beaming site. The cow poster I picked from a different site because it had the word COW written underneath of it and I thought it wouldn't hurt for her to recognize the word that goes with the picture. And the other link I came across was when I found copy of the Hey Diddle Diddle poem and picture. You can listen to the sound of a fiddle. I thought that was really cool. Now L know what a fiddle sounds like : )

~About Me~
Hello from Canada! I am a homeschooling mom to 3 very rambunctious children ages 10, 6 & 3 years old while holding down the fort as tug boat captain 'Dad' sails the seven seas *grin*. We're located on 40 acres in a tiny rural community in beautiful British Columbia and this is my quirky journal about our homeschool journey, running my home based business 'RosyUndPosy' making 'Eco Friendly Bags 4 Green Living', and everyday life home on the farm. Hope you enjoy your visit :)

Want to have a peak at what the weather looks like here today? Here's a cam showing the lovely scenic view looking east down Johnstone Strait past Helmcken & Hardwicke Islands.
