Cathedral Grove ~ Home to some of the largest trees in the world!!

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

I haven't had a chance to participate in a Show & Tell in quite a while so I thought that this week I would share about our recent visit to Cathedral Grove where the oldest tree is more than 800 years old!! Not far off of Hwy. 19 heading to Port Alberni on Hwy. 4 will you find this magnificent walk through some of the largest Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, Grand Fir and Western Red Cedar trees in the world :)

Most of the trees sprouted up when there was a fire about 300 years ago but there are some super huge trees no matter if they are 300 or 800 years old!

K is standing below the largest tree in Cathedral Grove, a Douglas Fir. The last time it was measured it was 76 meters high, 9 feet in diameter (from one side to the other) and a whopping 9 meters all the way around it!!
He's like a little ant underneath of it :)

Our visit wouldn't have been complete if we didn't do a little tree hugging....

And my personal favorite, bark and branch gazing. LOL. I am totally in love with these trees and I had to lay on the ground to take a photo upwards to try and capture the sheer size of it! I can't even see the top of it :) Hope you enjoyed a little peak at the Grove and perhaps one day you may have the sheer pleasure of visiting it to.

Show & Tell Friday ~ Ladybug Cake Tutorial

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

(click on the above graphic to view more show and tells or to join in)

I thought that I would share how I made my ladybug cake with all of you since I'm on a cake making run right now :) I better stop soon though or I'm going to turn into an over sized jelly roll! LOL.

All you need for this cake is one cake mix in your favorite flavor, a stainless steel bowl, a cupcake pan, one package of vanilla pudding, 3 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate and some colored icing :) To start with you need to grease and flour your stainless steel bowl really well and then pour enough batter into one cupcake paper to make one cupcake and the rest of your batter gets poured into your stainless steel bowl. Bake according to your package instructions.

Your stainless steel bowl is going to create the perfect domed cake for your ladybug body :)

Next cut your lady bug body horizontally into 3 pieces so that you can add your filling. I made a batch of butter icing (read previous tutorial for recipe) again and started out with adding just a little bit of cream so that the icing was really thick so that I could make icing ropes to line the perimeter of the cake to create a dam to keep all of the icing in so it doesn't squish out the sides when you put the next layer on top.

After you have your icing dam completed you can add your vanilla pudding filling. I tinted mine pink with a drop of red food coloring just for fun :) Add one more layer and then your ladybug body top to finish it off.

I added filling inside the cupcake as well but you could leave it without filling if you like to.

I wanted to make it look like the ladybug was going to fly so I rolled out a few more icing ropes to create boundaries where I wanted to leave a section of the chocolate cake showing for the underneath portion you would see if a ladybug's wings were open.

And the rest of the cake I smothered in pink icing. I know, ladybug's aren't pink *grin*. K pointed this out to me but unfortunately I was fresh out of red food coloring. LOL.

Now comes the fun part... making the chocolate polka dots :) In your double boiler or make shift double boiler like my above one, melt your 3 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate over just simmering water.

And then drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper and let set until stiff enough to pick up and transfer to your ladybug body.

You can even create a goofy mouth for you ladybug with the melted chocolate like I did *grin* And there you have it. One super cute ladybug cake :)

Have fun making one of your own!

Show & Tell Friday - Castle Cake Tutorial

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

I thought for this weeks show & tell I would share how I made K's castle cake just in case anyone has a birthday boy who wants one :)

The entire cake took 2 1/2 store bought cake mixes baked in 9x13 inch cake pans. I used Betty Crocker becaue I like them best *grin* With the first cake layer I cut off about 3/4 of the cake and split it into two layers. I then made a really big batch of butter frosting by mixing 1 pound of butter with 3 pounds of icing sugar. Beat the softened butter with the icing sugar until it is just combined and starting to stick together in a big ball. Using your dough hook works the best I found. Then add just a tablespoon or two of cream until it is the consistency of playdough. You want it to be really thick so that you can roll it out into ropes to line the edges of your cut cake like above to act as a dam for your filling so that it doesn't leak out when you put on the top layer.

Once I had the entire outer perimeter of the cake lined with icing I filled it in with vanilla pudding mix....

and then set the top layer on and the icing dam kept all of the pudding from squishing out the sides which makes it easier to ice in the end!! Repeat this step again with a smaller square for your top tower.

For the towers in the front of the cake I used my biscuit cutter and cut out three 3 inch circles for each of the towers and made icing dams for each of the layers and filled them with pudding before sticking them together. To fit your towers into your base of your castle take your biscuit cutter and place it on your cake base so just half of the cutter is lined up on your cake and cut out that section to make a half circle for the towers to fit into on each side.

Next I went back to the remainder of my icing and started to whip it some more adding a little more cream to it so that it would get softer and easier to spread. I had a bit of trouble making brown but if you add 6 drops of red, 1 drop of green and 18 drops of yellow food coloring it makes a nice brown. You may need to do this a couple of times to get the desired shade of brown :)

Once you`ve got your cake sections stacked on top of each other and the towers set in place all that is left to do is to ice it....

and add whatever decorations you want :) The tiny sugar cones work great for the turrets and you can make flags that are taped to toothpicks and then jam them into the top of the cones and shoestring licorice works really well for making windows and drawbridge chains since it is nice and light and sticks into the icing really easily.

Have fun making one of your own! To view more show & tells or to join in visit Canadagirl`s blog.

Show & Tell Friday ~ Our Christmas

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

(click on the above graphic if you would like to view more show & tells or to join in)

I think it's been about 2 weeks since I've participated in show and tell so now that things have slowed down around here again I wanted to join in :) I thought that I'd share some photos of our Christmas.

My sister and her husband borrowed a car from a friend so that they could come up and celebrate with us :) We started our super duper, finger licking good buffet at lunchtime on Christmas eve *grin* This year we thought we'd keep it smaller with not so much food and more cold stuff that we could just pick at all day long. So instead of a hot turkey meal this year we had cold turkey with buns, veggies and dip, deviled eggs, pickled asparagus, onions and olives, potato salad, 7 layer seafood dip, rye 'n cheddar biscotti .....

spinach and shrimp stuffed mushrooms which were awesome!....

baked brie with cranberries and walnuts....

more cheese! Can you say cheese maniacs?! LOL ...

cinnamon stars, the kids love these. I made loads of them. I think I stopped counting around 148 *grin* and more. I don't know how we thought that we wouldn't have tons of left overs but we're set for the next week or two. LOL.

After we grazed for a couple of hours we let the kids open a couple of their gifts from their cousins. K got 2 Sudoku books and he and Opa had fun trying to figure out how to fill in the numbers :)

Baby M got a little loader and was ecstatic :) He just loves getting 'guys' *grin* We played Rummy-O and had one heck of a time trying to figure out the instructions. Dh and I have the game but we haven't played it for years and completely forgot how it went! We finally got it going and spent a couple of hours playing. Then it was on to more finger foods for dinner and then we moved into the sitting room to open the rest of our presents :)

K has been wanting a feather pillow for his bed stuffed with lavender for I don't know how long so my mom bought him the pillow and then made a whole new flannel casing for it so that she could put in fresh lavender from the garden and then sewed it up tight so they couldn't escape. Then she stitched on the cute little prayer above for him :) He was soooo happy!

L got spoiled with dress up clothes from everyone! We gave her the ball gown on the right and then my cousin had fun revamping some of her daughters clothing into play dresses for L to. She did up the fairy one on the left and she also made her another white one with all sorts of tuille and flowers sewn to it and my mom got her a blond wig that is all piled up on top with curls and then it has a tiara on it. It is so cute and she is going to have tons of fun dressing up!

Last year we got my dad a huge heavy medieval padlock with skeleton keys to open it and this year I ran across the above HUGE iron key. LOL. He's building a new 2 storey shop right now and I was teasing him that it was the key to his new castle *grin* I'm not sure what he's actually going to do with it but it was a fun little, er big gift :)

We had a great time enjoying the company of family, spending uninterrupted time with Dh and remembering the reason for the season :) I hope that each of you had a wonderful Christmas to!

Show & Tell Friday ~ Victorian Christmas Ornaments

It's that time of year when we all start to dig out our Christmas trees, ornaments and other holiday decorations and I thought that this week I would share with you a few of the handmade decorations I have that my mother made for me :) The above one is her Peace Dove that she made with salt dough. These were really popular when she sold at the craft fairs and luckily my sister and I got one from her before she sold out!

My mom loves anything Victorian so of course what would a Christmas tree be without a Victorian ladies boot made of satin and velvet *grin*

And no Victorian lady would be without her parasol : ) These little satin beauties are stuffed with potpourri and smell delightful!

And lastly is this delicate cornucopia that she has made with potpourri and dried flowers. The flowers have lost most of their color after many years of use and are in need of a retouch but it's still pretty on the tree : ) Maybe I'll have to ask her to fix it up for me *grin*

The Homeschool Blog Awards gals have just started a new monthly gift swap and last month I was partnered up with a wonderful new friend from the blog The Homeschool Journey and she is right here in Canada! Well she sent me this lovely ceramic tealight holder and on the top of it is a little basin for dropping in some fragrance oil and water or even some of your favorite essential oils. It heats up the basin letting your essential oils emit their lovely fragrance throughout the room it is in : ) Accompanying it was a really cute handmade card with a little note inside of it. If you are interested in joining this months swap make sure you pop on over to the Homeschool Blog Awards site (don't forget to vote for you favorite blogs!) during November 10th - 14th and sign up. It was fun to meet someone new and to get a little surprise in the mail *grin*

Show & Tell Friday ~ Seaview Game Farm

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

(Click on the above graphic to view more Show & Tells or to join in)

Our homeschool group got to spend the afternoon at the Seaview Game Farm in Miracle Beach in their petting zoo last week and it was a lot of fun : ) When we arrived one of the first animals we got to see were the Bambi babies *grin* They were so cute and fuzzy!

In the next area was a pen of goats and sheep but they had to stay in their enclosures because of all the little ones. The owner was afraid that they would be to aggressive and end up head butting one of the children!

They had a HUGE pot bellied pig that was roaming around freely and all of the kids got to take a turn feeding her : ) Have you ever pet a pig? If not this one was like touching a wire brush : )

Baby M had fun watching the Emu's for a while and got his turn at petting the pig to :)

They had some really beautiful peacocks as well but unfortunately none of them had their tail feathers fanned out :( I was really hoping they would because they are soooo beautiful.

There were a couple of alpacas roaming around searching for food to that L got to feed. It's amazing what a bunch of happy children with hands full of grain will do to help a shy animal overcome their shyness *grin*

This was one scary looking boar!  I'm not even sure where his eyes are underneath all those whiskers and wrinkles LOL.

No one could resist a fluffy bunny : )

To finish off a fun day in the sun we got to load onto this giant tractor train and get toured around the farm. L was terrified to go onto it so we had some tears and she ended up hiding in my arm the whole time unlike Baby M who thought it was the best thing going : )

Show & Tell Friday ~ The Tale of a Tea Party Cake

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

(Click the above image to view more show and tells or to join in)

I sort of forgot about show and tell this week *gasp* and I didn't have anything planned so I'm going to share with you the makings of L's tea party cake : )

Yesterday I got the cutest little set of cake pans for making cakes for our tea parties and started putting them to good use late last night *grin*. When I woke up this morning I took the cakes and started cutting them in half so that I could spread a layer of vanilla pudding on them. I usually always make the same butter, icing sugar & milk icing but I wanted to try something different so I went searching and found a buttercream icing that you cook first before you add your butter to it. It turned out really great. Nice and smooth and tastes like store bought cake icing and of course I tinted it pink for Miss L : )

Here is the bottom layer all frosted. I really wanted to get it on super smooth but holy moly that is difficult!

I had no idea how I was going to get the second layer on top of the cake and ice it without completely ruining the first layer, so I decided to ice it separately on another plate and then I put it in the fridge until the icing firmed up. Once it was firm I gently slid my metal spatula underneath of it to loosen it and then lifted it and literally plunked it where it landed on the top. LOL. Luckily it was pretty centered *grin*

Next was the contrasting white icing polka dots and the piped line all around the bottom of the layers to hid the unevenness that was very evident in the above photo. Okay it's starting to look pretty good now....

it just needs the finishing touch, some Bonica rosettes from the garden. The frost hadn't killed them yet and they matched the icing perfectly. Yippee :) What do you think? I wanted a much smoother finish on the layers but that just wasn't working to well for me. A trick I did learn though was if I ran my spatula underneath the hottest tap water to heat it up then dried it quickly and applied it to the frosting it melted it a little as I turned it and helped to smooth out most of the lumps but I need to work on finishing the top to side edge.

Since it took me most of the day fiddling around to finish it we ended up having our tea party after dinner. Nothing like delicious cake and tea by candlelight : )

Show and Tell Friday ~ Ladies Tea Time

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

(click on the above image to read more show & tells or to join in)

Every mom needs a little time out once in a while and a chance to regroup her thoughts and enjoy the company of another lady. A social time of tea/coffee and perhaps some cake *grin*

Occasionally when Dh has been home for a couple of days and can stay home and watch the kids my mom and I make a date to get together in the evening when the children have gone to bed. Tonight was one of those nights : ) I went up to her house at 8pm and we enjoyed coffee in the parlor while relaxing in her wingbacks, under the chandelier and listening to classical music. Ahhh, so soothing to the soul : )

Oh and don't forget the hazelnut caramel chocolate covered hedgehogs :)
I returned home ready for anything tomorrow will bring my way!

Maybe that's the sugar high speaking from all of that chocolate & caramel. LOL.

Show and Tell Friday ~ The Playhouse

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

(Click on the above graphic to view more show and tells or to join in)

This is my old playhouse that my daddy built me when I was about 6. A loooong time ago *grin* My sister and I used to play in it all of the time and had countless sleepovers in it.

5 or 6 years ago the stairs that used to go up the back of it rotted away and where the ladder is in the above picture used to be a slide that we used to come down from the playhouse but it also rusted and came loose and has since been removed. So needless to say no one has played in it for some time and K has been begging for us to do something so that he could use it.

So yesterday we put up a ladder and my dad went up to check it out and make sure that it is safe to use. The roof is still in great shape and nothing appears to be rotten except that it has a slight lean but my dad bounced around up there and it isn't moving so once again it will be played in : ) This is the front door when you are up on the porch.

It was so fun to go up into it today and all of the memories flooded back. This was our little table that we had tea parties at : ) I am very happy that everything is in half decent shape after all of the years. The dampness has caused some of the wall paper to come loose and the mack tack on the table is peeling but all in all it's not bad.

This is our little china cabinet that my dad had made us fully equipped tea cups, plates, bowls and even some baking dishes : ) We even had one of those old mini metal folding ironing tables which is still up there. L is going to love using it!

Here are the two bunk beds on the back wall. They have old lawn chair foams on them which are mildewed and need to be tossed but we'll get some new ones in the spring so that K and L can lay in the beds. There is a light wired into it to so when we used it for sleepovers we had a light in the night and we ran an electrical cord up so that we could have a ghetto blaster for music : )

This is the front porch where you climb up. There is another little table and bench out there for sitting. I gave K the windex bottle and paper towel today and he spent the entire day cleaning windows, walls and so on. I didn't see him all day except for lunch and when he came in for dinner : ) I am so glad to see the playhouse in use again as it is so full of fun times and many more great memories of the past and future ones just ready to be made!

Show & Tell Friday ~ I found another one!

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

(click on the above image to read other show & tells or to join in)

I can't believe my luck! Last week I shared about how I finally found an antique highboy that was in good condition and affordable well the fellow that I bought if from gave me a call this week and told me he had another piece in that I might be interested in....

this beautiful Gibbard piece. I haven't had a chance to re-attach the mirror on the top yet and as I look at the photo it's even dusty dirty still. Oops : )

Inside the top drawer it has it's brass Gibbard plaque and he dated it roughly mid to late 1920's. The mirror on it is the original mirror so he told me that if I ever need to replace it when I remove the wood backing behind it it will be stamped with the year it was made because in those days they dated the mirrors. So for now I'll go with the approximate date since the mirror is in really great shape with only a few tiny blackened spots on it.

It's in wonderful condition and is solid walnut, no veneer on this baby and it has solid brass handles.

The little hidden treasure in this dresser is the bottom drawer. It is a cedar chest drawer completely lined with cedar planks : ) Oh I love the smell of it! This one I think is definitely going to go in my bedroom *grin*

Show & Tell Friday ~ Antique Shopping

(Click on the above graphic if you want to view other show and tells or if you want to join in)

I love browsing through antique stores and in the nearest town to us there are a couple of good ones so on tuesday when we went in to run some errands we decided to stop by one and have a look : ) I have been wanting to get some nice dressers or highboys for the kids because the ones they have are those cheap press board type ones and the bottoms of the drawers are always falling out :( and I have always kept the idea of finding some really nice antique ones tucked away in the back of my mind just hoping one day I'd come across something that didn't need refinishing and wasn't out of my price range.

Well to my surprise I found this beautiful walnut piece just waiting for me! It is in great shape as the previous owner had stripped and refinished it a number of years back so it only has some minor defects. The drawers are dove tailed and it has castors on the legs for easy moving and it is really big. It is just over 3 feet wide and a little over 4 feet high : ) I bought it in a snap and lucky to because there was someone else really interested in it at the same time. I had to leave it overnight until I could get back in with the truck and when I got there there was another person looking at it and would buy it off of me if I wanted to sell it to them. I must have got something really great if that many people were itching to buy it : )

My sister just finished taking the Alaskan cruise and on a few of her stops in Alaska she picked us up some little treasures : )

She brought both K and L a little vile of Alaska Gold Rush gold. It is so neat!

Here's a closer look at it. It is paper thin, reminds me of foil :)

The kids also each got a duck whistle. What a hoot! ah, er quack I mean. LOL. They have been quacking since she gave it to them on Monday, but they look so cute with the duck bill sticking out of their mouths and it actually sounds pretty good : ) They also got 2 t-shirts but I didn't have a photo of them to share.

Last but not least she brought me home this pretty little necklace made from a Glacier Pearl. Lucky me. It shines different colors in the light. She had a wonderful time and when I get a chance to go to her house I will finally get to see some of her photos :)

We have had the pleasure of being able to have Flat Stanley visit us for the last couple of weeks : ) He came to us from Tamara's family and we intend to show him a really good time so that he can go home with many tales to tell!

Stanley had mentioned to us that he had never been to a country fair on Vancouver Island before and since we just LOVE going to the fair we made that the first stop on our itinerary and what's a trip to the fair without having your photo taken with the prize winning Best in Show chicken :) Quick Stanley! you better get out of there before that rooster pecks you!

Phew! this is much safer and wow is this Hampshire ewe ever soft. I think we should stay here a little while and pet her. What do 'ewe' think.
Tee hee hee, that Stanley is a real ham : )

On our way out of the barn we ran across some really big pigs. This one was snorting and snuffling around in the wood chips so much and making such a breeze he nearly knocked poor Stanley flat on his face! Oh dear. Are you okay Stanley?

I think that Stanley was a little embarrassed that we were so worried about him being such a small guy that he decided to show us just what he was made of! He entered the Logger Sports event and sunk all 4 of these Paul Bunyan sized chainsaws straight into the log faster than you could say 'Lickety-Split'!

As we left the logger sports area we came across the antique tractors and cars and to Stanley's delight we found a car that shared his name. The 'Stanley' Steamer. Now this was a treat that you just can't beat!

We tried to get Stanley a ride on the steamer, we begged and we pleaded but the closest he got was to stand next to the sign.

Our day wasn't done yet and there were many more tractors to watch move around, and we promised our new friend Stanley that before we went home he would get a chance to ride on at least one : ) As we passed the Farmall's, the John Deere's and the Massey Harris tractors we came upon an old threshing machine in perfect working condition. Stanley had never seen one before and ooh was it neat! It took the hay in on a conveyer belt and then inside the machine it stripped the grain off of the hay stalk spitting the grain down one chute into a big bag and the left over hay out another shoot and all this was powered by a great big steam powered tractor and one really floppy belt!

Just as we were about to give up hope on finding Stanley a ride on one of the tractors a kind young fellow on his John Deere tractor pulled up along side us offering hay rides for all of us : ) The fellow could see that Stanley was sooo excited that he let him ride up front with him while Humpty Dumpty and the rest of the gang bumped along in the back on the hay wagon. A great day was had by all of us : )

Show & Tell Friday ~ Our New Hay Cutter

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

A while back I told you about our tractor that we had purchased, a Massey Ferguson circa 1940-50ish I believe and last week I showed you my new pasteurizer. So keeping with the farm machinery & equipment theme I will now share with you the hay cutter attachment I just got for the tractor. Woohoo : )

I was browsing through the Buy and Sell paper (you never know what goodies you might find but didn't know you needed *grin*) and found cutter attachment right here in the town that we live in which is great because we didn't need to travel to get it! So we went to have a look at it and ended up getting it for $50 less than the asking price....

and he threw in a plow (above pic) as well! We needed that as well since our fields are in terrible need of re-seeding.

We finally got it off of the truck and onto the tractor. It is a really heavy piece of machinery and it took both me and my dad to wiggle it off. What is neat about it though is that it is stamped with made in Canada all over it. Even on the bolts : )

Here is the cutting blade. It is a large steel bar and then a row of teeth spaced out on top of the bar. The wooden drive shaft goes to make the teeth slide back and forth across the bar like scissors cutting the grass. It was seized up a bit and some of the teeth were bent so we had to replace some of them and oil it up really well to get it to move smoothly.

K got to help out to by fetching teeth, watching to see which ones were catching and using the grease gun on all of the moving parts. He knows just about as much about it as my dad now!

We finally got it freed up and here he is heading down to the field. We were all so excited to see it work : )

Yay!! Look at it go. It's actually cutting down the grass. We have never had our own machinery for cutting our hay or anything like that and have always had to rely on someone else to come in when they had time, cut and bale, and then of course they always took a portion of the bales. So this is a big achievement : )

Show & Tell Friday ~ My new SafGard Pasteurizer

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

If you want to check out more Show & Tell's or join in click on the above button : )

Ok, it's not actually new but it's new to me : ) So new that I haven't even had a chance to knock the dust from it!

I was all excited because I had found a hardly used Vacuum Assisted SafGard Pasteurizer in the Buy and Sell magazine this week and it was located right here in my own town, it was cheap and I knew who was selling it. So I called them up crossing my fingers that they still had it. No one was home so I left a message. A couple of days went by and I sort of gave up hope that it was still available when the phone rang. She had it but had accidentally packed it and shipped it with her husband all the way up north to Dawson Creek where they are moving to!! But, she had an older one that she would just give to me and if I was still interested in the newer one she would ship it to me when she got there and found it. Well you can't pass up a freebie! So I ran up to her house right away and picked it up. She hadn't used it for many years and could hardly remember how it goes together or how to tell me how to use it : ( So I have it but I have no idea what to do with it *grin*

It's an older model like I had mentioned so it has an agitator to move the milk around in the canister so it doesn't scald on the bottom near the element. I've put it all together and figured out how to lock the milk bucket into it and the agitator top appears to just sit on top. I can't see that it locks down securely unless I'm missing something? The big outlet hose is included that you drain the hot water out of it with and thankfully the rubber stopper for the end of it was there to.

But I'm not sure what this hose is for?? It is quite narrow so would it be to hook onto the faucet and slip in between the milk canister and the wall of the pasteurizer to run the cool water in to cool it down after it is finished? Does anyone have one of these with a manual or have experience using one? I would love some help *grin*

Now all I need is my dairy cow!

Show & Tell Friday ~ Wedding Favour

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

Last week Karen had a beautiful magnet for her show & tell from Hungary and it made me remember the pretty little magnet that I got from my Aunt when she got married.

Both my aunt and uncle were currently doing missionary work in the Ukraine when they met and quite a few years later when they decided to marry they went back again and were married there where they had been living in Dnepetrovsk. Some of the ladies that they grew to know as close friends in the Ukraine volunteered to hand paint these pretty little wooden magnets with their names and wedding date to give out to their family and friends. Such a special keepsake for them and for those of us who weren't able to make it.

Blessings,
BChsMamaof3
