Sign ups for the 2007 Spring Session of BHEA Monday Fun Classes will be Monday, Dec. 4 from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Classes offered are detailed below. 

Classes at 9:30 a.m.

Book Cooks – Ages 3 – 9 years. Taught by Pat Hoffman.  Cost is $25. Class will read books and prepare a recipe based on the stories.  A cookbook will be given out at the end of the semester. Limit:  16 students.

Preschool Book Fun – Ages 3 – 5 years.  Taught by Donna Williams and Donna Hammonds.  Cost is $20.  We will be reading a book each week and activities to go along with each book. We will also play games, and sing songs to go along with the stories. This will be a continuation of the fall semester.

Patriotic Did You Know? – Ages K – Grade 2.  Taught by Laura Green and Krista Allison.  Cost is $25. Who was Yankee Doodle?  Why is she green and carrying a torch?  Did a president really get stuck in the bathtub. Lots of hands on fun and learning!

Hebrew Dance – Ages 2nd Grade and up.  Taught by Pam Stott.  Cost is $30.  Students will learn to worship the Lord with Hebrew and other praise dances.

Piano Instruction – Grades 1 – 3.  Taught by Debbie Hankins.  Cost is $85.  Emphasis on note reading and counting, scales and chords.  Hands-on keyboard.  Class size limit is 3 students.

Creative Writing – Grades 3 – 6.  Taught by Sarah Small.  Cost is $25. A great way to get your reluctant writers excited about writing! We'll try our hand at various genres (poetry, fiction, nonfiction) with lots of in-class writing and group activities. Correct spelling and perfect grammar are not required! Students will need a writing journal for weekly at-home assignments.

Prima Latina – Grades 2 – 6.  Taught by Leigh Laney.  Cost is $40.  Continuation of Session One (no new students).

Galloping the Globe – Grades 2 – 4.  Taught by Marj Overstreet.  Cost is $25.  In this geography class, we will gallop through the continents of Asia and Europe with stops in 10 major countries.

Design/Drawing – Grades 7 – 12.  Taught by Jennifer McIntyre.  Cost is $95.  Projects will center around design principles like repetition and anomaly.

Classes at 10:30 a.m.

Joyful Noise – Ages 2 – 4 years.  Taught by Donna Williams.  Cost is $20.  A Kindermusik-style class for preschoolers and their moms with a biblical theme. We will learn songs, read stories, dance, and make musical instruments. (Moms are requested to stay with their little ones for this class.

Basic Grammar – Grades 7 – 12.  Taught by Sarah Small.  Cost is $60.  This class will cover the basics of grammar, including parts of speech, parts of the sentence, and mechanics. Homework will be assigned each week and tests will be given. This class will be open first to high school students; middle schoolers will be welcome if space permits.

Hebrew Dance, Little Praisers – Ages 4 – 6 years.  Taught by Pam Stott.  Cost is $30.  Students will learn to worship the Lord with Hebrew and other praise dances.

Hands on Math – Grades K – 2.  Taught by Julie Griesen.  Cost is $25.  Each week, we will work on a different math concept using literature as a springboard for our daily topic and activity.

Art – Grades 1 – 4.  Taught by Jennifer McIntyre.  Cost is $46.  Every week we will visit an artist and do a project based on something we learned about that artist.

Beginning Music Theory – Grades 1 – 3.  Taught by Debbie Hankins.  Cost is $40.  Hands-on beginning note reading and counting.  Theory sheets, scales and games.  Class size limit of 7 students.

American Girls History – Grades 2 – 5.  Taught by Tammy Freeny, Lisa Best and Caroline Milne.  Cost is $25.  This class will cover the books that make up the “Samantha Series.”  The books will not be provided but can be borrowed from the library.  

Literature Circle – Grades 5 – 8.  Taught by Leigh Laney.  Cost is $40 (includes book).  We will read three books.  The reading will be done in class along with fun projects.  The first book is Wrinkle in Time  which is included in the price of this class.  

East vs. West Cultures – Grades 9 – 12.  Taught by Caroline Roberts.  Cost is $ TBA.

Classes at Noon

Dr. Seuss Book Club – Ages 4 – 7 years.  Taught by Donna Williams and Leigh Laney.  Cost is $ 30.  We will read a different Dr. Seuss book each week and do experiments, games, songs and art projects based on the subject matter.  A very hands-on and visual class.

Preschool Bible Fun – Ages 3 – 5 years.  Taught by Karen Metcalf.  Cost is $25.  Each week, this class follows the same format, including activity songs, finger plays, poems and a different Bible story and related activity.

Hands on History – Grades 1 – 4.  Taught by Tina Riley.  Cost is $30.  Students will study the history of the Middle Ages through class instruction, literature and hands-on activities.

Scrapbooking for Girls – Grades 2 – 5.  Taught by Julie Griesen.  Cost is $35.  We’ll make a family history scrapbook which will include pictures of immediate family, grandparents, great grandparents (if pictures are available), aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.  The scrapbook will also include information about the native country of relatives and pictures of family heirlooms.

Art – Grades 3 – 6.  Taught by Jennifer McIntyre.  Cost is $46.  Every week we will visit an artist and do a project based on that artist.

Pioneer History – Grades 6 – 8.  Taught by Lesa Crisp.  Cost $36.

Spanish – Grades 5 – 8.  Taught by Suzette LaPorte-Ayo.  Cost is $60.  Immersion in these programs occurs through conversation with the instructor and classmates, games, art, videos and books.

Health For High Schoolers (continuation of first session – no new students).  Taught by Angela Lengley.  Cost is $50.

Research Paper – Grades 7 – 12.  Taught by Sarah Small.  Cost is $60.  The purpose of this class is to lead students through the process of writing a research paper from start to finish.  Finishing assignments at home is absolutely essential. Only a few spots are available in this class. Prerequisites: students must have taken either my essay class or Julie Cagle's literature/history course or must submit a 5-paragraph essay.

CSI for Kids - Ages 8 – 11. Taught by Pat Hoffman.  Cost is $25.  Fingerprinting, Hair Analysis, Handwriting Analysis, Composite Sketching, etc...learn the skills of a Crime Scene Investigator!  Each child will receive a briefcase with their completed assignments at the end of the semester.  Limit: 12 students.

Classes at 1 p.m.

Spanish – Grades K – 2.  Suzette LaPorte-Ayo.  Cost is $60.  The students will be immersed in Spanish through games, songs and finger plays from the instructor’s native country.

American Sign Language – Grades 3 – 5.  Taught by Sandra Harrison.  Cost is $25.  Experiential conversational instruction in American Sign Language with the use of the English Language.

Readers’ Theater/Drama – Ages 8 – 12 years.  Taught by Leigh Laney.  Cost is $30.  The first part of this course will be performing a different Readers’ Theater script in each class.  The second part of this class will be practicing for and performing a short play at the Spring Finale.  Child must be able to read.  

Rediscovering Lost Arts – Grades 4 and up.  Taught by Teresa McKinnon.  Cost is $40.  

Knitting – Grades 6 – adult.  Continuing group.  Taught by Karen Quilliams. No fee.

Art/Drawing – Grades 7 – 12.  Taught by Jennifer McIntyre.  Cost is $95.  Drawing I - Students will complete a notebook using various methods and techniques to use with drawing (perspective, shading, density, etc.).  In Drawing II, students will expand their understanding of drawing with inks and colored pencils.  In Drawing III, students will develop their own personal style (requires teacher approval and completion of Drawing I and Drawing II).

Algebra I – Grades 8 – 12.  Taught by Sarah Kerr.  Cost is $20.  Class is over at 2:15 p.m.  An algebra course using the text Elementary Algebra with Applications (Terry Wesner and Harry Nustad).  Book is available as text or for download (free).

Bard – Grades 9 – 12.  Taught by Lesa Crisp.  Cost is $60.   A literary look at Shakespeare from a Christian perspective.  We will cover two plays and write about each play.  We will also watch film versions of the plays (when available) and do some read-aloud.

Classes at 2 p.m.

Spanish 1 and 2 – Grades 9 – 12.  Taught by Suzette LaPorte-Ayo.  Cost is $92.  Students will be introduced to Spanish grammar in the first course and will be immersed in Spanish through games, songs and finger plays typical of the instructor’s native country.  Spanish grammar will be expanded in later course.

4-H Club – All ages.  This is free, but some projects have fees.  Citizenship, leadership, public speaking, arts, crafts and community service.  Students learn a variety of skills working on individual and group projects.

All Outside Classes

Middle School Classes and High School Classes outside of BHEA Monday Fun are currently full.  Check with individual teachers to see if there are any openings in specific classes.

BHEA is an association of independent homeschooling families that formed in the late 1980s to encourage successful home education in Blount County. The organization, which operates with the help of many parent volunteers, provides support, information and encouragement to over 200 homeschooling families.
