• Sep. 6, 2006 - BHEA Swimming Lessons at Maryville College
. Homeschool Swimming Lessons
WHAT: Swim lessons for BHEA homeschool kids. WHY: These lessons will be taught by Maryville College students who are taking a class on how to teach swim lessons. Our kids are their students as the MC students are evaluated on how they teach swimming. It is kind of like student teaching. WHEN: Wednesdays, beginning October 4 - November 15, 2006, 10 AM - 10:45 AM NOTE: NO CLASS ON Nov.1st. WHERE: Maryville College pool inside Cooper Athletic Building WHO: ONLY BHEA members' kids ages 6 - 18; THE FIRST 20 - 30 THAT SIGN UP! - This number could change depending on how many MC students are in Coach Schram's class. HOW MUCH: $30 per child, (that comes out to $5 per lesson for 6 weeks). Money due at first class, checks made to Maryville College. WHAT YOU MUST DO: Send an e-mail to Becky vanderVeen, vanderveen5@juno.com, with the following information: Parent's name Child(ren)'s name & age(s) Phone # and/or cell # (where you can be reached easily) E-mail address Swimming experience of each child This info is very important, as it will be compiled & given to Coach Kandis Schram. She will then use the info to initially place each child in a swim group, depending on their experience or lack of. Depending on the number of students she has in her own class will determine what the swimmer to student teacher ratio will be.

• Jun. 2, 2006 - Karate Review
TTJC Karati is located in Midland Plaza. The people who own it are wonderful Christian people, Mr. Shane and his wife Laura. When they are not working at the dojo, they are very active at their church, where Mr. Shane is an associate pastor.
They are very concerned about the children. Self-esteem and self-improvement are the main focus. They encourage team work, a good and positive attitude both at karate and at home. Mr. Shane likes to hear how everything is going at school (or homeschool) and with the family. If there are any problems, he will speak to your child. Often he will share a parable or moral story with the kids. They are always happy to have new people join.
They have a Black Belt Club which meets an additional time and is also an honorary part of the group. My son is now in the adult class, so we meet at 7:30 pm. He has classes at all different times. He encourages students and parents to stop in, observe, and try a class before committing. I just can't say enough about them! Lori Wade |

• Jun. 2, 2006 - Dance Review
As many of you know, we are RAVING FANS for Tennessee Conservatory of Fine Arts in West Knoxville and Fountain City... we've been there for years now and our dancer is enjoying her first year "on her toes!" (we "make the drive from Maryville" and find it well-worth the travel!)
Many homeschoolers attend their classes and they've just added several NEW DAYTIME OPTIONS for us--yippee!! (You may not recognize TCFA--have you heard of Ballet Gloria? The Director of Ballet Gloria is the owner of TCFA... ;-) )
If you've got a child eager to start dancing, or one who's learning elsewhere and you're curious about other options, you owe it to BOTH of you to check out this wonderful and excellent studio. There are summer sessions available for late June-thru-July--great way to give it a try or observe a class or two as you make decisions regarding registration for the fall.
You can email tcfa@comcast.net or call 689-8525 or 560-9392 for a schedule specific to the age/needs of your dancer, but here are some highlights of classes added for this coming session, which begins early in August: WEST KNOXVILLE STUDIO (convenient to get to either from Kingston Pike, just east of the Cedar Bluff and Ebenezer intersections OR I-40 (Gallaher exit? sorry-I don't come this way... actual address is 8705 Unicorn Drive, 37923): Monday DAYTIME Additions: 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Ballet/Tap I/II (typically 5 and 6yos) 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. Ballet A/B (typically 7 and 8 y/os) 3:45 - 4:30 p.m. Interpretive Dance (mixed ages--thru teen years!) many more, including higher level Ballet and Jazz... AND, another NEW one: 7:45 - 8:30 p.m. Advanced Tap
