American Heritage Girls Troop 131
AHG will be having a Parents' Meeting and Ice Cream Social on Thursday, August 23, 7 p.m. at New Providence Presbyterian Church (please note this is NOT our usual meeting location). This is for any NEW members, any OLD members, and anyone INTERESTED in joining American Heritage Girls!
Girls in grades K-12 are welcome to join. AHG meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 3:30-5 p.m. (Cub Scouts runs at the same time, so families can have one stop for both boys and girls!) Come hear what AHG is all about! We currently have about 75 girls in grades K-11 (all but a couple are in BHEA). We will have registration forms available for new members.
For those of you new to BHEA, AHG is a Christian alternative to scouting. AHG was founded in Cincinnati in 1995, and our troop (the first in Tennessee) has been in existence since 2003. For more information, please visit the website.
We'll start with the parents' meeting at 7 and we'll provide childcare on the playground. After the meeting we'll all have ice cream together. AHG families, please bring a favorite ice-cream TOPPING to share. The troop will provide the ice cream.

Cub Scout Pack 442
BHEA's Pack 442 is going to have a Parent Meeting/Ice Cream Social on August 28 at a location to be announced.
Each family should bring their favorite flavor of ice cream, one topping, and a drink. Utensils, bowls and cups will be provided. We would love to have some Homemade ice cream as well!
The purposes of this meeting include:
1. Meet other cub scouts and parents.
2. Register and pay the yearly $10 fee for cub scouts if this has not already been done.
3. Give you an idea of how Cub Scouts works, who your son's leaders will be, and what your role as a parent will be.
4. Plan Cub activities for the year and help you see how you can use your talents to help the Pack do those activities. For example, wood working, organizational skills, hiking or outdoor interests.
Both parents are encouraged to attend. If you are a family that has been in scouting for several years, please come and plan for one of you to help with childcare after the ice cream-eating part of the meeting is over. We would like for several parents and Boy Scouts to play games with the kids and/or supervise them on the playground, so that the other parents can attend the meeting.
We look forward to seeing you on the 28th!

Age/grade level: PreK-3rd

Description: The goal of the class is to teach the kids to love and appreciate our local wildlife. Each week will be a different animal of study. All animals will be from our area and could be animals encountered in the child's own backyard or our wonderful mountains. Our wildlife is increasingly losing their homes due to all the development being done. I hope to teach the kids about co-existing with our wild neighbors! This would be a two part class. Part 1 in the Fall and Part 2 in the spring; however, you would not have to complete Part 1 to do Part 2. If class goes well for the 2007-2008 school year then it could be expanded for the next year. Our class time will include crafts, games, activities, stories, movies, songs, and more. Kids will be working on a portfolio for the semester and will have take home work and activities so the parents can get involved with the class too.
They will learn:
*Understand the animals behavior (when they are active, what they eat, where they live, what they do, and why)
*How to determine what animals might be in their yards and why
*Why animals are coming into our neighborhoods
*What to do if you encounter one of the animals
*To love and appreciate all the wildlife offered to us here in the mountains, but also respect the fact they are wild.
*Why we do not feed or interfere with wildlife
*How to handle an injured wild animal and what to do
*Possible field trips will be planned for Wilderness Week in Pigeon Forge in January, Ijams Nature Center,
Smoky Mountains to take part in the Junior Ranger program, and a local rehabilitation center. This would
give the kids a chance to see live animals we have learned about and get out in nature.
*Awards for completing each semesters course.

World View Studies: Thinking Like a Christian
Instructor: Cory Bennett (SMHEA president)
Cost: $80/semester plus texts (2-semester course)
Texts: Thinking Like a Christian: Understanding and Living a Biblical Worldview, David Noebel with Chuck Edwards (First Semester); Countering Culture: Arming Yourself to Confront Non-Biblical Worldviews, David Noebel and Chuck Edwards (Second Session); Blah, Blah, Blah: Making Sense of the World's Spiritual Chatter, Bayard Taylor (Both
Semesters)
Course Description: Most Christians today have a faulty worldview. It is the lens or filter through which you view and experience life. If your worldview "lens" is faulty then much of what you do and accomplish in your life will be based upon a flawed understanding of God and His world. This class will equip your student to stand against the destructive ideas and philosophy that threatens our faith. The second semester focuses on non-Christian worldviews that permeate our culture and compares them with the Christian worldview. This course is a must for every Christian high school student. It is a course about how the world works and about who makes the rules and how they make them. What does the Bible have to say about topics like religion, government, family, politics, and economics? A worldview is a foundation for understanding and applying Biblical truth to the world around us. This course is a start on what I hope will become a lifelong study. It will also seek to prepare students for the challenges of college thought and scholarship, and assist them to identify and understand the worldview assumptions inherent in higher level academics.

Jul. 17, 2007 - Getting Started in Homeschooling Seminars
If you are a new homeschooler, Smoky Mountain Home Education Association (SMHEA), in conjunction with BHEA, will be providing a Getting Started in Homeschooling seminar in August. This will be much like BHEA's Homeschooling 101 that we provide each spring, but we thought it would be beneficial for SMHEA to present a similar seminar again in August for brand-new homeschoolers and those unable to attend our spring 101.
The meeting will cover such topics as how to get started in home education, getting organized, basic information on Tennessee home education law, home school registration, choosing curriculum and
homeschooling high school students.
If you'd like to attend, please send an email to Sarah Small at shc.small@gmail.com or president@smhea.org to confirm a spot and to help us know how many materials to prepare. The seminar will be on August 20 , 6:30-8:30 at the Blount County library in Dorothy Herron Meeting Room A. This meeting is free and open to anyone; you don't have to be a BHEA or SMHEA member. Apr. 5, 2007 - BHEA's Annual Homeschooling 101
When: Saturday, April 14, 12-2 p.m.
Where: Blount County Public Library's Dorothy Herron Rooms
What: This free program will present the basics of home education, including getting started, registering, choosing curriculum, socialization concerns, and much more. Curriculum tables will also be set up so that participants can examine various types of curricula. This seminar is free and open to the public.
BHEA MEMBERS:
We still need members to help by providing "Curriculum Share" tables. This is a popular part of Homeschooling 101, as it gives new and current homeschoolers a chance to get a hands-on look at various curricula. Parents will often just want to see a particular book, or they may have questions to ask about how you incorporate a text into your schedule.
All you need to do is bring a selection of your favorite homeschooling materials to set up on a table and be willing to answers questions. You won't be giving a speech; it's a very casual "browsing" environment. It doesn't matter whether you use a textbook approach or are completely eclectic; we need a variety of tables to assure people that there are a variety of approaches to homeschooling. The Show-and-Tell session will begin about 1 p.m. and will end promptly at 2 p.m.
Be sure to tell any friends who are considering homeschooling about Homeschooling 101. This is a valuable introduction to homeschooling. We'll be covering homeschooling laws, registration, and approaches in our introductory session from 12-1 p.m. Participants will receive several excellent hand-outs and have a variety of catalogs available to take home to peruse. Please note that current homeschoolers are welcome to attend, too! We will have several members available for one-on-one questions during the second half of the program.
If you would be willing to help out with a Curriculum Share table or have questions about Homeschooling 101, please contact Sarah Small at shc.small@gmail.com . |

Oct. 25, 2006 - The Well-Integrated Homeschool and 10 Things to Do with Your Child Before Age 10
Announcing a Special Event for East Tennessee Homeschoolers: Gena Suarez: The Well-Integrated Homeschool Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn: Ten Things to Do with Your Child Before Age 10 We have a wonderful evening of homeschool encouragement to share with area homeschoolers. Paul & Gena Suarez, Publishers of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, and Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn of Trivium Pursuit are joining together to encourage homeschoolers in a special 2-hour presentation.... WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 7, 6:30-9 p.m. WHERE: The Blount County Public Library (Sharon Lawson Room) in Maryville, Tenn. Mapquest for directions at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville, TN 37804. DETAILS: * Gena Suarez will kick off the night with her Well-Integrated Homeschool presentation. In the Well-Integrated Homeschool, Gena goes over the numerous ways to achieve a relaxed mindset while homeschooling. Homeschooling should never be a chore! A laid back, joyful homeschool is a realistic, long-lasting homeschool. Long term is the goal, and Gena encourages families to stick with their commitment to home educate their children all the way through. After sharing a brief, panoramic view of the history of both compulsory and private education (parent-based vs. institutional-enforced) Gena offers some compelling strategies to help families "lighten up" and help their children enjoy learning as much as life itself * Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn will share with the audience a little bit about what homeschooling was like in the late 70s and early 80s, along with their thoughts on Ten Things to Do With Your Child Before Age Ten. A Q&A session will follow. Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn began homeschooling their children in 1980 and have given workshops on homeschooling and classical education for support groups and at conventions across the country. Their publishing company, Trivium Pursuit, produces books and curricula to help parents use classical education in their homeschool. The Bluedorns live in New Boston, Illinois, and can be reached by visiting their web site * To wrap up the evening, Gena and her husband Paul and the Bluedorns will open up the floor for a Q&A time. Past audiences have really enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and to get to know the speakers even better. RSVP: Space is limited. Please contact Sarah Small (Blount Home Education Association) at shc.small@gmail.com or Maria Roy (Sevier County Homeschool Group) at sevierhomeschool@yahoo.com if you would like to attend. No admission will be charged, but a love offering will be taken to offset travel and production costs for the Bluedorns. (No childcare will be provided for this event.) Don't miss this night of encouragement and insight from these leaders in today's homeschooling world! There will be opportunities for door prizes, including a subscription to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and book giveaways by the Bluedorns!!

Sep. 22, 2006 - BHEA New Members' Brunch
If you are new to BHEA this year or joined during the year last year, please try to join us next Thursday, Sept. 28, for our annual New Member's Brunch. We have been doing this for several years now and it is just a nice chance to get to know each other. We don't have any planned agenda, speakers, or any program...just some good food and conversation. As I am sure you know, it is not often that we can sit over a cup of coffee and just talk! Don't miss this fun morning!
If you can join us, please email me at mtnhomeschool@aol.com and let me know how many will be attending so we are sure to have enough food.
This year's brunch is 10 a.m. at Broadway United Methodist Church - downtown Maryville across from the main Citizen's Bank. Come in the door at the back of the church - near the playground and head to the right - we'll be in the fellowship hall. We usually stay and visit until close to noon - but feel free to come and leave when you can.
I would love to have some "experienced" homeschoolers join us to help answer questions and welcome our new members. If you can join us, please email me.
We would also love to have some of our teenagers join us to help entertain any children that attend with their moms. We can just set a table up at the end of the room and try to keep the kids in the same room but still give the moms a chance to visit. If you can help with this, please let me know Thanks for your help!

Sep. 6, 2006 - BHEA Swimming Lessons at Maryville College
. Homeschool Swimming Lessons
WHAT: Swim lessons for BHEA homeschool kids. WHY: These lessons will be taught by Maryville College students who are taking a class on how to teach swim lessons. Our kids are their students as the MC students are evaluated on how they teach swimming. It is kind of like student teaching. WHEN: Wednesdays, beginning October 4 - November 15, 2006, 10 AM - 10:45 AM NOTE: NO CLASS ON Nov.1st. WHERE: Maryville College pool inside Cooper Athletic Building WHO: ONLY BHEA members' kids ages 6 - 18; THE FIRST 20 - 30 THAT SIGN UP! - This number could change depending on how many MC students are in Coach Schram's class. HOW MUCH: $30 per child, (that comes out to $5 per lesson for 6 weeks). Money due at first class, checks made to Maryville College. WHAT YOU MUST DO: Send an e-mail to Becky vanderVeen, vanderveen5@juno.com, with the following information: Parent's name Child(ren)'s name & age(s) Phone # and/or cell # (where you can be reached easily) E-mail address Swimming experience of each child This info is very important, as it will be compiled & given to Coach Kandis Schram. She will then use the info to initially place each child in a swim group, depending on their experience or lack of. Depending on the number of students she has in her own class will determine what the swimmer to student teacher ratio will be.

Aug. 26, 2006 - Language Arts Ideas
Hi everyone! Here's my two-cents' worth on Language Arts. This seems to me to be the trickiest area of home schooling because there are so many different aspects to it: Reading, Handwriting, Writing, Spelling, and Grammar.
Choosing the materials from one curriculum provider (Sonlight, Abeka, Alpha Om ega, etc.) and sticking with them seems to work well for many people, but if you haven't found one you like, the "eclectic" approach works, too.
We did Sonlight Language Arts through second grade. It worked for both of my daughters to learn how to read. Sonlight describes their approach as a "natural language-learning approach," and they offer supplemental workbooks to go along with their readers and activity sheets. This is what we used: 1. Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for the Code for Kindergarten. 2. Explode the Code--Workbooks 1, 2, 3 for First Grade 3. Explode the Code--Workbooks 4, 5, 6 for Second Grade (This series is good for phonics and spelling.) 4. Wordly Wise Workbooks A and B for Second Grade (vocabulary)
For 3rd Grade, I am using a more eclectic approach with some materials purchased from Sonlight and elsewhere. Shoshana is doing: 1. Wordly Wise C (vocabulary) 2. Word Study D (vocabulary) 3. Daily Grams (for 2nd and 3rd grade grammar) 4. Sequential Spelling 1 (a spelling program that builds spelling around word families)
HANDWRITING: We have been using and enjoying "A Reason for Handwriting." We used their K book for Kindergarten, Book A (Manuscript for First grade), Book T (Transition) for 2nd grade and Book C (Cursive) for 3rd grade. This program uses Bible verses as handwriting exercises.
GRAMMAR: We are using Shurley English 1. We started it last year but got bogged down by the amount of text and gave it up. I started it again in January and really liked it! There are great jingles for learning about parts of speech, exercises for sentence classification, and a weekly test. Even though my girls are in 2nd and 3rd grades, we are going to finish Shurley English 1 this year because I think it will provide a good foundation. Then we may skip to Level 3. (I actually bought a used Level 3 which turned out not to be the homeschool version, but I guess I'll try to use it anyway--the layout and plan is different from what I'm used to.) Shurley English is a bit pricey, but it would sell well used on eBay.
WRITING: Writing remains a bit of a mystery to me. I know that many people like "Writing Strands," but I looked at it and felt bored. I figure that if I'm bored with it, the girls will be, too. So I have bought a new program to try this year, "The Institute for Excellence in Writing," (IEW). This is also "pricey" but is supposed to teach me how to teach writing to my daughters all the way through 12th grade. Stay tuned to see how it's going.
I would be glad to show anyone any of these materials or workbooks if you want to contact me personally. I can bring things to Monday Fun, or you can stop by my house. I'd also be interested in anyone else's comments on Writing and Grammar. Sonlight sells Winston Grammar, but it looks like it's for 4th grade, so I haven't bought it yet.

Aug. 24, 2006 - Cub Scout Kick-Off
Monday 8/28:
What: Kickoff Picnic for Cub Scout Pack 442 Where: The Wall's House and adjacent Public TVA property in Louisville which is about 25 minutes from downtown Maryville. When: From 6:00-9:00pm. Stay as little or as long as you like! Why: To have some good ol' outdoor fun, get wet, take some canoe rides, get to know one another better and build a camp fire! What to Bring: Picnic dinner for your family only and a blanket, water shoes or old shoes to get in the river, canoe or durable raft if you have one (with life vests), fishing poles and bait if you want to fish, binoculars if you want to bird watch, extra clothes, folding chairs for the camp fire and picnic, frisbees, football to toss.
General: Our house backs up to 25 acres of public land and there is a mowed field which is on an inlet of the river. There is a mowed path through the woods which is short walk and stroller friendly. There is a public dock and plenty of shoreline from which to fish, splash in the water, canoe etc. All families are welcome to bring a picnic dinner and a blanket and get to know some of the other scouting families in BHEA. If any parent wants to supervise some games, that's great too! The field is nice and flat and quite large. We will have several canoes and life jackets if PARENTS would like to take their kids for a canoe ride around the inlet or island nearby. We will have some Boy Scouts from Troop 442 who will help any interested cubs set up our campfire and we will roast marshmallows and sing songs as the sunlight wanes.
This is a FAMILY activity! We look forward to seeing everyone! Contact Sharon Wall with any questions sonzmom@yahoo.com
