REVIEW: Rime To Read

When I first received word that I would be doing a review on Rime To Read, I thought the title either had some sort of significance I wasn't yet getting or it was just plain misspelled!  But in going to their website, I learned the following:

Rimes: Word families that sound alike and look alike
(eg. sat, cat, bat,  mat)
Rhymes:  Words that sound alike, but don't always look alike
(eg. care, hair, ware)

Well, now I know the significance!  (Just a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't know the meaning of rime!)  Anyway... this company is an online program for beginning readers.  They use an approach to teaching young children to read by emphasizing particular word families (or rimes!).

Rime To Read is made up of 20 short books.  There are four books for each short vowel sound.  Each book concentrates on a particular rime, all with their own color code used  throughout the series.  (For example: Pam, jam, ham ~ Ben, ten, den ~ pig, big, dig, etc.)  There are also basic site words that are introduced in each book that is printed in black.  The color-coding is said to help children see the similarities and differences which helps them to decode and help to aid memory.  All 20 books can be printed or read on your computer.

Each set of four books is $9.99, or you can purchase all 20 books at once for $44.99.  Since these are virtual books, there is no shipping and you get them immediately.  You can try book 1 for free HERE.

These are great books for beginning readers.  I like their simple, yet effective, approach.  I could see how they would be great at building the confidence of a first time reader.  I am definitely going to be using them with my youngest!
