November 7, 2009 - Tickled Blue!

I am so excited and very proud to say I am now officially the oldest of 9 children! :) Samuel Ira was born today! We are 20 years and 12 days apart.  He is just precious and sweet! A true gift from God! I'm tickled there is another newborn in the house! :D Altho... there are so many people to share him with. LOL! Trying to snatch him anytime I can! ;) Will get some more up about him and pictures soon! :D I am just soo happy he's here!
I am so blessed by God to have another sibling to love, to watch grow up and to TRY to be an example of how to live as our Messiah did!
Thank you God for the blessing of this precious babe! Such an awesome Shabbat this has been!

Thursday, November 5, 2009 - A Visit to the Local High School

Amy made my heart glad today with this remark, "Boy, I'm happy I don't have to go to school!"  It's the kind of remark that encourages an insecure homeschooling mother to just keep plugging along.

The girls have been wanting to play tennis for some long while.  Upon hearing of this the other night, a friend from church generously loaned us a couple of rackets and a can of balls. He said, "Just go to the fire station and ask the fire chief for the key to the tennis courts.  I do it all the time."  Just to be sure we weren't going to be chasing a wild goose, I called the fire station this morning.  I had four girls all dressed for the courts and ready to go.  "No... we haven't had the keys for the tennis courts for three years.  You'll have to call the high school."  Aha!  Just as I suspected!  A goose was loose.

After learning that I would have to bravely send my girls on to the high school campus, I gave them $5 for a key deposit plus a walkie-talkie.  In fifteen minutes my radio bleeped.   I could hear a bit of resentment in my daughter's voice.  They needed to have an adult signature. Why don't adults trust kids?   I had to brush my teeth and make my hair look presentable, but my girls waited patiently.  Borrowing my daughter's bike I pedaled three or four blocks to the high school.

No one accosted us when we entered the gate, but the girls had been questioned the first time they went in.  "Do you have ID?  What are you doing here?"  As if they look dangerous.  But I can understand the school having security.  They might have weirdos off the street, four little Baptist girls in skirts, for example, come in shooting or something.  Scary.  Funny thing is, to me it looked a lot scarier on the inside that it does on the outside!

We made our way to the administrative office building and down the hall to the bookstore.  We could feel eyes turning to stare from all directions. Frankly I was happy to be an unusual attraction -- a  happy mother with orderly children, none of whom were dressed like street-walkers in training.  I signed for the tennis court key.

As we exited the building we met the one teacher we know there, and we stopped to chat for a minute.  He's a good man trying to make a difference in this place. Truly, it's a mission field. His family homeschools, too.

Going around the outside corner of the building I was thinking maybe we could get off the campus through a back gate and avoid walking all the way around.  I noticed a security guard leaving the building right behind us, and observant woman that I am, I did not notice until I had asked him for directions, that he was actually a police officer, and in front of him was a male student in handcuffs!

On our way to the rear gate, which we found locked, one of the younger girls excitedly pointed out the little playground equipment, and commented that she didn't know high schools had playgrounds.  I explained that that was play stuff for the school's day care...

Finally making our way back to the front gate, Alison said, "I don't like the way these kids look at me.  They probably think I don't know anything!"  I told her they probably know a lot of things she doesn't know, and to be glad for that!

And after all that, the tennis courts were full.  But it wasn't a wasted trip.  We now have a key.  We learned first hand that school is like prison.  And I now have four kids who are glad to be homeschooling.

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,
If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

John 8:31,32

Nov. 4, 2009 - Count Your Blessings, Name Them One By One

I wanted to share a blessing that happened this week.  I want to have record of it so when I sometimes forget how God blesses us even in the little ways I can be reminded.  Jay and I have been wanting to get bunkbeds for the girls since before we moved to this new house last March.  Cost and getting exactly what I want have been the two inhibitors.  I want wooden bunkbeds that have a twin on top, full on bottom with drawers underneath.  This way it will fit all three girls and eliminate other dressers in their room.  We have found several we like from Craigs list and Jay can even make them (which would be awesome).  The added expense comes in with the mattresses they add $150-$300 to the cost.  So we have been praying, saving and holding off.  Let me go back also, in the mean time we got rid of Savannah's toddler bed when we moved and the two girls have been sleeping on a blow up mattress or on the hide a bed in the playroom (they actually love sleeping there).

A few weeks ago a friend from church asked us if we wanted a twin mattress in good condition that they no longer needed.  Awesome score one!  Then just yesterday Jay was getting ready to leave for band practice and one of the guys he picks up told him to make sure the surburban was cleared out and all seats down because he and his mom had an early Christmas gift for us.  Well we had no idea what it could be.  I waited patiently impatiently and finally called Jay.  He told me they gave him a queen size mattress.  (Jay never mentioned to them about us needing a bed for the girls) I have to be honest here my first reaction was "a queen size mattress what are we going to do with this?  It would be a bed for the girls but God, you know we are wanting bunkbeds and need a full size mattress".  I immediately repented and started thanking God for this provision and said even though I don't understand I will be thankful and I truly was and thanked God through out the day.  Jay finally got home around 7:30pm and unloaded the bed (mattress, box springs and frame) as he brought it in I thought it looked rather small for being a queen and told Jay.  He said they said it was a queen.  So we set it up and I got out some queen size sheets and they were too big!  What???  I got some full size sheets and they fit perfectly.  Jay and I were so excited.  We now have the two mattresses we need for the bunk beds.  Now Jay can either make them or we will continue to save to get them.  The girls were excited to sleep on the bed!  Thank you Lord!!!  It is all in His perfect timing we just need to continue to pray and have faith and know that God provides everytime.

I hope this encourages you all to continue to wait on the Lord and His timing and to accept gifts from the Lord even when it might not be what we think we need or want.  It was an excellent reminder for me!

Nov. 4, 2009 - What Makes a Person an American

What Makes A Person An American by Matthew Reynolds

This has been an argued over question for many years. The only way to be truly an American is to love your country, accept the American form of government, and acting on the right to vote. These three things are just a few of what it means to be an American, but they are the most important.

To love your country is to be willing to do anything for its good and prosperity even when it means giving up your own life for the cause of the American people. It is to give up your own life for the sake of others that are depending on its country to stay free and independent. It is our duty as Americans to protect are rights as Americans and fight off anyone who thinks otherwise. As Americans have many rights that we almost never use, but those rights are being shot down one by one. The government is slowly taking away those rights that we have as Americans. If we do not do anything about it they will be all gone.

Accepting the American form of government would be to participate in the annual elections and honorably elect a person whom you would want in office. The American form of government is a republic which has three branches. The first is the Executive branch is the President of the United States. He is the overall commander of the United States military and has the power to veto or deny any bill that passes through the other branches. The second branch is the Legislative branch which is the Congress and can be seperated into two sub-branches. The first sub-branch is the Senate, it is made up of senators, two from each state. The second sub-branch is the House of Representatives which is made up of representatives from each state and depending on the size of the state, one state can have more than the other. The third branch is the Judicial branch which consists of nine justices who are appointed by the President. This is the government that has been set up by the founding fathers and was influenced by other governments throughout the world to become effective being able to stand for years to come.

The right to vote is privilege and it should not be ignored for any reason. The ability to vote was given to us by the founders of America and most people back then did vote. Now today very few people actually vote because most people are happy with whoever is in office, but we all know that is not true. Most Americans today are just too lazy to go and vote! If every eligible person voted the elections would be quite different. If we did not have the right to vote, we would have no control over whom was in control over us, and we would become like Nazi Germany or Italy during World War II. You can name a great deal of countries that are not able to vote for whom they want in their government.

For a person to be truly an American, he or she must truly exercise the rights of an American. If they do not then this country as we know it will crumble. Because the government will become out of control and we will become like all the countries who have fallen apart and disappeared into history.

Oct. 31, 2009 - Halloween Fun

I love this book and once again Claudia shared it with us at our annual home school Pumpkin Parable Party.  Claudia provided great crafts for the kids to do, pumpkins to carve, yummy chilito eat and a great time to relax with friends.

On Saturday we started the morning with orange glazed cinnamon rolls with orange juice, orange plates and ornage cups.  They were yummy and this was the only picture I got.

In the late afternoon we went to the church for some fun activities and then came home and went trick or treating as well.  However this year I pooped out.  I couldn't handle all the walking.  I went ahead and put Tasha to bed she wasn't feeling that well so she didn't do any trick or treating.

My sister-in-law made this shirt last year when she was pregnant.  I think it is so cute!

Our little gymnast!

Lilo and Stitch

Christina and Stitch

Our goth girl.  This was a great costume for her because it is so not her personality and she had fun with it.

The trick or treaters

Happy Halloween!

November 3, 2009 - Wordless Wednesday: Two Decades

Nov. 2, 2009 - Little ladies...

I am definitely raising little ladies.  Ladylike princesses...

Mimi sits at her highchair, smeared all over with oatmeal and bleary with her milky tea in a sippy cup when all of the sudden she remembers, and raises her tiny arms up to her head.

"Pitty, mama!  Pitty, pitty, cute Mimi!"..

She rakes at her once clean hair with oatmealslime hands, all of a tither that she doesn't have a ponytail in her hair...

Later, she and Naynay are being best of friends.  Naya had a cup of chocolate milk that she made with some of the leftover chocolate fondue sauce, and she shared it, then made them each another cup.  Mimi followed her around reverently while i cleaned up the kitchen, and then i heard this...

"Is that yummy, Mimi?"  "Um! "  "Is it better than num nums?"  "Mama, num nums!"  "Yeah, is it better than num nums?  Mama doesn't make *CHOCOLATE* num nums!"  "Mama... boobies" (okay, this is where it goes from G rated to PG)  "Yeah, Mimi!  Mama has boobies!  An' I have boobies! (lifts up her shirt to show her little sister  - see, this is where the ladylike part comes in...)  An' you have boobies!  An' you have nibbles, and I have nibbles, an' Mama has nibbles!"

I couldn't help but laugh...

Wednesday, November 4, 2009 - Month in Review -- October

It's that time again!  Past that time.  If I don't hurry up and post this it will be the November month in review post.  Looking back through my photos, I can't believe October went so fast.  We had a fun and busy month with twelve days of special company -- there went almost half the month!

We are well into school for the year, but we about to make a curriculum change in math.  I do love Teaching Textbooks, but I have at least two children who would benefit greatly from some Charlotte Mason-type learning.  I am having a hard time breaking out of my box, but thanks to my dear friend, PlainJane, we are getting some very practical math and taking a break from TT for a bit.  Introducing Your Business Math Series.  Amy and Elisabeth will be bookstore and pet store owners, respectively.  They will be responsible for ordering stock, selling product, recording sales and figuring sales tax, and calculating their monthly profit.  But first things first!  Each girl will have to come up with a name  and a logo for her business!  They are going to love this, and I think I will, too. (Please, God, let us have only happy faces at math time from now on!)    But wait, that is what is going to be happening THIS month.  Back up!

October started with lots of creative play. I love this stuff!  Elisabeth contructed a covered wagon and roped a horse to pull it.

Betsy's interest in things western continued throughout the month.  A friend left us a couple of felt cowboy hats.  Within a few minutes Betsy had rifled through her drawers and come up looking like a real-live cowgirl, minus boots.  Boots.  Boots!  Cowgirls have to have boots!  What ever will we do?!

On a whim I stopped at the Salvation Army to find a pair of kids' boots.  No cowboy boots, but look what they did have, in unopened boxes:

This was such a fun find, because while some people are always in the right place at the right time, I am almost never in the right place at the right time. I'm in church at the right time, of course, which is the right place to be at church time.  But I rarely get in on a deal.  This time I did, and I am thanking the Lord.  For a song, we are now the happy owners of a Lego train station, cavalry soldiers, bandits, horses, garbage truck, and even a bicyclist -- that one's for Daddy, you know -- and lots of extras!  There you have it.  That's what the little girls have been busy with the entire month.

In the few moments when no one was Lego-ing, we had a couple of birthdays...

Emily was so excited to get If You Give a Cat a Cupcake and its accompanying kitty, that she made all of listen to her read the book out loud before she would open the rest of her gifts!  Daddy and Em had their Dad and Daughter birthday date at the famous In-N-Out Burger.  Good choice, Em. She's been in a big hurry to be six ever since she turned five.

The other October birthday was Alison's 15th.  I can't believe we didn't get one birthday photo.  Where was my head??  Where was everyone else's head??  It's so wonderful to have a teenage daughter.  It such a blessing to see the Lord working in her life and making her into a responsible and very pleasant adult person.  Here she is working like crazy on a hat for a friend's little girl's birthday.

We enjoyed a nice visit from Grammy and Grampy, complete with art and art lessons.  Amy and my mother seem to be kindred spirits of sorts. They share a common interest in artsy stuff; add to that the same genes for height and slenderness and energy.  I now have more of my mom's paintings and pastels hanging in my living room.  They are very special to me.

Elisabeth learned to crochet!  Here is her first complete project, a hot pad:

Emily helped make supper. It was one of those days.  One of those days when the man of the house needed to be fed with something delicious and filling, to know he was loved and appreciated in his castle. We got a huge auto repair bill that day.  Medical bills were piling up. But the man of the house came home to an experimental meal. I meant well, really I did. The website said this one was a keeper. It wasn't in this house . Disaster struck!  And there was enough of this horrid dish to feed an army and a half!  It was so bad that  it became a sermon illustration!  But a prudent wife doesn't throw bad food in the trash -- she figures out a way to make it edible.  Next day it was salvaged and  gobbled up.

The western theme continues:

We had special meetings at church with special friends from Kansas and here in Arizona,
we witnessed a gun fight in our local gold-mining ghost town, Oatman,

climbed Sitgreaves Pass (in the car),

climbed a mountain at sunrise, on foot (using the word "we" very loosely, I admit),

played music, participated in speech co-op, and enjoyed our first cold weather, complete with hot cocoa, layers of clothing, extra blankets, and long underwear.  But not the furnace. Not yet.  (Don't laugh.  It's cold here, too.)

And finally, the month was finished off with a surprise package in the mail!

Isn't God good?  Yes, he is!

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness,
and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Psalm 107:8
