True Confessions: I saw the Da Vinci Code

Posted in Everything Else
I woke up this morning wondering what, if anything, I would share about last night.  I went to a prescreening of "The Da Vinci Code" with my friend Ruth after she won free tickets.

Let me back up and explain....I haven't read the book.  I haven't wanted to read the book.  And, I love books.  But I just never had any interest in this book - before or after the controversy started.  We even had a Sunday School on the book/movie and the heresy contained - but Eric and I couldn't go, and we thought no biggie - we don't care to read/see the book anyway.  But we were surrounded with it!  The school where Eric teaches was providing booklets to educate the parents about the heresy.  The church where we used to attend is showing some sort of video in June to which we were invited.  And, of course, I mentioned that our own church had taken time out of it's series on theology to explain the heresy.

But, then Ruth called and she had won tickets and would I like to go...I admit I agreed more out of a desire to have a girls night out than a desire to see the movie.  But we went and it was good!  I wish I had read the book because books are ALWAYS better than movies and this was a good story.

And, as far as the heresy - well, I can't wait to open the theology and history books that we have (and believe me we have TONS) and read the truth.  I feel the same way about this movie as I did about "National Treasure" - it was highly entertaining and I can't wait to read the REAL history.

Would I recommend anyone else go?  Well, that's your decision.  As far as the heresy...I think it will open a door for some great discussions.  However, there is a couple of scenes involving a monk that were VERY graphic.  My friend and I were both looking away for those scenes.  I think they could have done without them!

I'm glad I didn't pay for the movie - but it was an entertaining evening with a friend.   And I look forward to some great conversations with my DH and others after they view the movie.

May. 19, 2006 - Good For You!

Good for you for going and keeping an open mind. I read the book, and was disappointed by its historical inaccuracies (I'm a history major), but I didn't want to condemn it until I had read it. Besides, the movie is a good opporotunity to expose people to the truth, and educate them about the difference between fiction and historical fact of all kinds!- HouseMouse

dh and I were just talking about the book this morning. We both read it last year and enjoyed it. It's a great mystery, combines religion, history and conspiracy theories. The theology is junk, but we were able to read it as a work of fiction - which it is. I can understand why it's such a hot button, though.

May. 20, 2006 - I did not read either...

My dh read the book and begged for me to read it. After hearing his summary of the plot I decided I wanted to read other things. I did read all of the Left Behind Series and enjoyed them.

I heard on the radio that the movie bombed at Cannes Film Festival and the movie falls very short of the book. I don't plan on seeing the movie until my dh rents it and even then I don't know if I'll want to waste my time.

The controversy is completely ridiculous but shows how gullible a people we can be. Someone wrote a book, my whole faith has been shaken! Come ON! How strong was your faith if a fictional book can shake it? And there are those out there just looking for a good faith-based controversy, they live for it! I do pray that stronger Christians emerge from this or at least Christians willing to research for themselves instead of believing what they are told. (Sorry, maybe I should do my own post about this.) Read you later! Jessica

May. 25, 2006 - Read the book...

HI! I read the book and really enjoyed it. I read it like a "National Treasure" type thing. I LOVE mysteries! As far as all the hoopla...how are you going to know if you don't see or read it? It's like the political documentaries...Farenhiet 9/11 and Farenhype 9/11....it is really good to see both and then decide! Anything that gets people exploring their faith and/or asking questions is good. I find, being a Catholic, a lot of people have HUGE misconceptions about my faith. When they ask questions...I learn more. It's a beautiful thing. Plus, I get to help enlighten others. Some people will take this movie for the "truth", but they were probably lost already. It's like the people who believe the space program is a sham and that there is a mother ship floating above us (and Bush blew up the levees). Some people are LOOKING for their own version of the truth....and no searching is going to help them. BTW, I will probably wait to rent the movie...I hate spending the extra money.

About Me

Day by Day....we strive to learn together, love each other and have some fun. Day By Day.... we strive to raise our boys to be knights and warriors for the Lord. Some days it's a struggle...

Cast of Charaters

Me - I like to read and knit. I've been a Christian for many years and loving learning about God and seeing the Lord work in our lives! I also post on my other blog, "Journaling Back To Joy"
DH - Is a theologically trained teacher of 4th graders at a Christian school. He loves astronomy, LOTR and playing with the kids! He is the funniest man I know.
J1 - 12 - our oldest. He came to live with us when he was 16 mos old and completely turned our lives inside out! While he is struggling with self-control right now - he is the one who can brighten the room just by smiling! He loves creating things from our recycling and anything that allows him to move (trampoline, skateboards, inline skates, etc)
J2 - 11 - our middle son. He is the one who I am currently homeschooling. He loves to create things from Legos and he loves movies. He would watch movies all day if I let him :( He has just had a major breakthrough in reading - for which we are praising the Lord!
J3 - 6 - my joy. He has a very tender heart for me and really works hard to make me happy. He loves to cuddle and is just learning about Legos. He wants to be with his big brothers so much, but the age difference is a big hurdle right now.
Joshie - 5/29/02 - 2/22/03 - Our surprise! Our only pregnancy that the Lord allowed - and we were blessed to have him for those short mos. We are all still grieving his loss - you'll hear alot about that from time to time. We look forward to getting to know him someday.
