Sep. 23, 2009 The Winner's Circle (Part 2)
Then she held the reins a little tighter and leaned forward as Flicka soared over the first jump.
“Yes!” Alaina whispered as Flicka’s hooves hit the ground. A wide smile spread across her face as she jumped the second jump. There was nothing to be afraid of , Flicka knows what she’s doing. Alaina thought while going over the third and fourth jump.
“Thank you God, I cleared them all!” Alaina whispered looking upward. As she rode out of the ring she heard the announcer say, “And that was Alaina Berkley and Flicka Nova with a time of 59.9 seconds!”
“Yes!” Alaina whispered to herself excitedly. She looked over at her family who were running over to her happily.
“Nice job, Laina!” Dessalina said. “You guys did great!”
“Yeah, Flicka didn’t even look like he even noticed that the jumps were like two feet higher than he’s used to!” Solana threw in.
Alaina dismounted off of Flicka and started to pet her. Flicka threw up her head in excitement and neighed.
“Great job, beautiful girl!” Alaina whispered to Flicka in admiration.
“You guys are naturals!” Dian added.
“Sure are, great job baby girl!” Ken replied while giving Alaina a hug.
“Couldn’t have did it without my wonderful horse and my even more wonderful coaches -slash- father and mother!” Alaina commented.
“And you finished in 59.9 seconds, no one is going to beat that time!” Faithie’s friend, Emily, added.
“Whoa, hold your horses, there are three more competitors to go!” Alaina reminded with a smile. “Someone can still beat me!”
* * * * * * * * * *
Alaina was right, someone did beat her by 1.5 seconds later on. But Alaina was not mad or sad about it, just thankful she placed. So she went over to congratulate the winner after getting her second place ribbon.
“So how about I treat you guys to some ice cream to celebrate our first and second place winners!” Ken offered.
“Sure!” Everyone answered in unison.
“ But first I have to call Lanye and see how the guys’ shows went?” Alaina asked her dad.
“Go ahead.” Ken said pulling out his cell phone. Alaina dialed her big sister, Lanye. While it rang Alaina thought about how blessed she was to have a big family consisting of eight members: Mom, Dad, Lanye, Charles ( Lanye’s husband ), herself, Brad ( her thirteen year old brother ), Faithie, and Darrell ( Lanye and Charles’ son ).
“Hello?” Lanye said breaking into Alaina’s thoughts.
“Hey Lanye, how’d it go?” Alaina asked anxiously.
“It went great. Brad got second place in the Teen barrel racing competition, Darrell got third in the Kid’s barrel racing, and Charles got first in the Adult Bull riding, you should have seen him, Alaina, he was flying every which way trying to hold on!” laughed Lanye. “How’d it go for you guys?”
“It went great too, Faithie got first in her race and I placed second in my new jumping division with a time of 59.9 seconds.” answered Alaina.
“That’s good, Laina, Praise God!” replied Lanye.
“Hey Lanye, I’m sorry but I have to go, Dad’s taking us out for ice cream and then I’m staying over at Lina’s, so I won’t see you until the morning, but I think Faithie will be home.” said Alaina.
“Alright see ya, God Bless and good job, tell Faithie I said that too!” replied Lanye.
“Will do, God bless you too! See ya tomorrow!” Alaina responded. Alaina hung up the phone and went over to the car where everyone was standing.
“Ready?” Alaina asked everyone which was followed by a series of yeps, sures, and uh huhs.
* * * * * * * * * *
As they ate their ice cream, Alaina thought about how even though they didn’t all place first, she knew that God was proud of their attitude and sportsmanship and that in His eyes they are all in His Winner's Circle.

Aug. 3, 2009 The Winner's Circle (Part 1)
The beautiful, brown Thoroughbred galloped around the track at full blast trying to pick up speed so she could pass the others.
" Faithie and Spartan are doing great!" Fifteen year old Alaina Berkley yelled to her mother, Dian, trying to speak above the noise of the clapping and cheering.
"Thank God!" Dian replied happily.
I hope she prayed before she went out, racing can be dangerous. Thought Alaina. Well just in case. Alaina bowed her head in silent prayer. Heavenly Father, please be with Faithie and Spartan and let her try her hardest even if the outcome is not in her favor. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Suddenly she heard the crowd go wild! She looked up to see Faithie and Spartan passing the finish line first. She ran over to congratulate them when she saw Faithie, her thirteen year old sister, saying a prayer. Alaina waited until Faithie was done and cheered.
"That was amazing!" Alaina replied. "Spartan was so great and you looked like a pro riding him!" Before Faithie cound reply, Emily and Mariah caming running over. Emily, thirteen, and Mariah, fourteen, were Faithie's two best friends. Their mom loved that all her kids had good Christian friends that were mostly homeschooled like her family.
"Hurry Laina, you're gonna be late!" One of her best friends, Solana, known as Lana, said breaking her out of her reverie.
"Yeah, you only have twenty minutes to get Flicka ready and get dressed!" said her other best friend, Dessalina.
"Here, you go get dressed and I'll get Flicka ready for you." Faithie offered. "Then we'll meet at the barn for a prayer before you go out."
"Wait! What about you? Remember? Your first place ribbon in the Winner's Circle?!" Solana replied.
"Oh, right, I kind of forgot about that!" Faithie exclaimed.
" Who forgets about their first place ribbon?" Solana teased.
"I guess I just wasn't....."
"Guys! Alaina's competition, remember? No time for chit chat!" Dessalina reprimanded.
"Sorry." Faithie and Solana apologized.
"That stinks! I wanted to see her get her ribbon!" Alaina said, clearly disapointed.
"How about this, Laina you go and watch Faithie get her ribbon and then hurry and get dressed, while I get Flicka ready, alright?" Dessalina demanded more than offered.
"Okay. Thanks a lot, Lina, you're the best! I'll meet you guys in the barn for our prayer in about 10 minutes!" Alaina said and hurried away.
"Okay!" they all replied.
"Wait, you're the best? She said I was the best last week!" Solana complained teasingly. Dessalina laughed. Alaina stopped in her tracks and turned around.
"You're both the best! Happy, Lana?" Alaina teased.
"Ecstatic! Now go! You're gonna be late! You too Faithie!" Solana said sarcasticly yet joking all the same. Alaina smiled as her and Faithie ran away. As she ran into the stands she thought about how thankful she was for her friends. Thank God for my friends! Triple L can never be separated. We're friends for life! Triple L was the nickname for her group of friends because of their nicknames, Laina, Lina, and Lana. They were known as Triple L in their small town because they had formed a Christian band and they sing at local weddings and events.
* * * * * * * * * *
After seeing Faithie get her ribbon and getting dressed, she ran to the barn where everyone was waiting for her. The eight of them bowed their heads while Alaina's dad, Ken Berkley, led them in prayer. After they raised their heads they all recited their traditional verse before Alaina went out.
"If you believe, you will recieve whatever you ask for in prayer, Matthew 21:21" Then they walked down to the ring.
"Break a leg out there, Laina!" Dessalina said excitedly.
"You didn't mean literally, right?" Alaina teased. Dessalina and Solana laughed.
As she mounted onto Flicka, her seven year old mare, the horse nuzzled her leg in welcome.
"Hey pretty girl, are you ready?" she asked her beautiful, brown Thoroughbred while giving it a pat on its neck. Flicka neighed her answer.
"Okay girlie, let's do this!" As she rode into the ring she prayed a silent prayer. Lord Jesus, please keep me and Flicka safe, this is our first jumping competition in the Advanced Teen Jumpers Division. The jumps are way higher. Please let Flicka clear them. In Jesus' precious name, Amen. Just then she heard the announcer.
"Next in the ring, Alaina Berkley riding Flicka Nova in the Advanced Teen Jumpers Division." After a round of applause, Alaina started sprinting forward. As they neared the first jump, which was five feet tall, Alaina's heart felt like it had dropped. Why am I so afraid? I jump all the time! Just relax! Alaina thought. Then she held the reins a little tighter and leaned forward...............
