Mar. 24, 2007 - long work days

I should be in bed. Working 12-hr shifts today and tomorrow, almost an hour drive each way.

One care home resident today told our med aide, "you're my servant, you have to bow down to me." She is terribly self-centered. If we try to remind her that she is one of 35 people we take care of, she doesn't want to hear it, and has stated so. She probably has had an "uppity" attitude all her life. I need extra grace in dealing with people like that, lovingly but assertively. Yes we're supposed to put the residents first, but not put one first at the expense of the other residents.

Out of the last 60 hours, only 6 of those were sleeping hours. Also, we had a resident like that at the nursing home where I used to work. It didn't help that we were always short handed. Also if you tried to anticipate her wishes and take care of them before she asked to save time, she actually got madder. I once made the comment that I was just trying to be helpful. She responded with, "No you are just trying to be right."

Oh, that would be difficult to deal with someone like that! I hope your days are easy and that you get plenty of rest! Take care, dear friend, and I'm praying for you! ~ Julie
