By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; and by knowledge
the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. ~Proverbs 24:3-4
• Feb. 19, 2009 - It is coming! Are you ready?
What??? Pi Day!! Officially celebrated on March 14 at 1:59pm.
The planning has started at our house! Are you ready yet?
What?? You have no idea what to do?
Check out these sites and blog about what you did to celebrate! Have fun!
And check back here on 3/15 to see how our day went!
Our church has a big Chili Cook-Off and Watch the Super Bowl event. Last year, Mark entered it with a chili based on mine - just more spices. This year he started from scratch and I did not enter at all. Does this picture tell you how he did?
There were 3 pots that looked this way when I took the picture. Yup, you guessed correctly. They were the top 3. Our dear friend Ella won 1st place and Mark tied for 2nd place with our dear friend Amanda. Confession time --- I voted for Ella. Yeah, he "hit" me for that and probably rightly so. I just liked her's a bit better than his. BUT I made up for it - I had him cook me another batch on Monday because as you can see, we did not get to bring any home from the contest!
It was cold here again and some parts of the state got snow, but not us. We just got cold!!!
On Thursday, we hung out with friends at the museum. That was fun, but it was about 32 out - but very sunny!!! Mei and friend braving the cold to play on the playground.
Mark and friend building with Kaplan blocks. This was a long bridge they made. Pretty cool!
Yes, stats is easier when your kitty helps... Paul has been accepted from 2 local colleges, waiting for the big one to decide. Mom and Dad are going silly trying to get taxes and financial aid forms done by Feb 15. Arggghhh!!
A spur of the moment science lesson this week --- Yup, you are seeing double here. The sun was shining through our coffee table which has beveled edges so it caused the rainbow to repeat. We had just studied light from the sun, so we reviewed the names of the colors in the visible spectrum.
I survived the state's audit of my homeschool. It lasted all of 7 minutes and was not painful at all, although I was very nervous and kept messing up my words. I said I was teaching my sister rather than my daughter -- things like that!!!
I keep waiting for life to slow down, but somehow it remains busy -- why is that??
• Jan. 21, 2009 - Another snow day for some people...
Public school closed today. Paul gets to sleep in tomorrow too - a 2 hour delay.
Homeschool was in full session today. We had to make up the stuff we skipped yesterday!
Mark & Mei built this little guy late yesterday when it warmed up and the snow started to pack. Yes, we have posers! My friend Julie gave Mei this wonderful Snow Man Kit - just add snow!!!!
Earlier in the day we tried to find a place to sled. This road usually works, but not enough snow/ice today.
We love to play games, especially at lunch - just about every day! When Mei was in K, we played lots of Uno for color and number recognition. When Mark came home, we added Skip-Bo and more recently, a few hands of Phase 10. We enjoy the reasoning and strategy involved. We also practice helping others over the competiveness of winning. Our cards are a little sticky though!
Today, we played Blokus at lunch - for spatial awareness, strategy and fun. Mei won!
We also like to play file folder games for phonics. Matching games - we just played one where we match facts on sharks with shark body parts.
Then just for fun, we play Monopoly, Life, and Chess. We let Mei be banker so she can practice her adding and subtracting.
BTW - My dear friend has a child who is legally blind. She likes to play Blokus by touching the tiles and card games like Phase 10 with Braille codes on them. I am truly amazed at her ability to follow the game in her head. But then again, she composes, plays, and sings her own songs - all from memory.
Post about your favorite field trip. Pictures optional.
We have had some fun ones and some interesting ones. My favorite is the one we took a few weeks ago to the Asian Market. You can read the blog post to find out what we did.
Why was it my favorite? Because it was just us. The kids loved it. We ate yummy Chinese food and we took home several bags of frozen Chinese dumplings - a huge hit at our house. I really enjoy being with my children and we had a really fun time together that day!
Another part that made it special I did not blog about. After we were done, we went to visit an elderly friend that lives nearby. Miss Billie lost her husband about 2 years ago and her daughters moved her away from us, but closer to them. She is like a grandma or older mom to me. We had not been to see her for awhile since it is normally a 30 minute trip one way. We stayed for about a hour. Mei loves to visit her for 2 main reasons - 1) Miss Billie has a working gum ball machine that you feed pennies into & 2) Miss Billie has a wonderful tea set she lets Mei play with. Miss Billie enjoys Mei cooking pretend food for her and me to eat. This time, Mei even wrote out menus for us to order from. Although Miss Billie is in her 80's, she still has a little girl inside her that likes to pretend! We had a wonderful visit.
