By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; and by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. ~Proverbs 24:3-4

• Sep. 1, 2006 - Our first full week

Well we made it through the first week!  I felt like I spent more time preparing than actual teaching, which I decided was a good thing.  It felt great to be able to move from one item to the next without having to hunt for things or look things up.  A lot of the prep I did this week was for the whole course so the prep should be less soon, I hope.

Animal Worlds:

I could not read the text in the Animal Encylopedia and keep my daughter's attention.  I had to skim it for the important parts.  We did talk a lot about each picture.  She likes the book; we looked at several sections that were not assigned.  We made the hippos.  It took me a practice hippo (orange one) before I could figure out how to make him look right.  It was Mei's idea to add the tree, water, rainbow, and flowers.

Math:

We worked on ordinal numbers, adding, counting by 10's, counting to 100, telling time (hour only), and days of the weeks.  She is making great progress and loves to do math!

WP Pre-K/K LA:

We practiced writing the pre-letter shapes.  She is now writing her name and staying within the lines.  She wrote her name and my name on our hippo pictures.

I came up with a schedule for this week.  I'll have to test it next week when AW and LA are at their normal load; this was a light week.  The biggest change for me in starting to home school is that I don't have as much personal time.  This could be a challenge for me.

I received a gift from God this week.  My favorite age is from one to two years old because they learn so much that year.  Well, Mei was almost 2 when we brought her home from China.  I was a little bummed at her age because I had missed my favorite age.  But this week I was amazed as I watched her doing math.  I could just see it all becoming clear in her mind.  Yes, I missed her first smile, her first steps, and her first words, but God has granted me the chance to see her learn other things.  Thank You Lord for allowing me to share this time with my daughter.

• Aug. 25, 2006 - Our First Day!

We started today!  We took it easy; we will start with the full schedule on Monday.  We did an actual math lesson today; last week we whizzed through the lessons until I found out what she knew.  It went well except that it took forever for her to decide on what sticker to put on the calendar for today.  After I excercised, we made her animal notebook covers from stickers.  She did most of the lettering herself from a sheet where I had written the title.  Then we went to lunch at Chik-Fil-A' - our favorite spot.  She fell asleep on the way to pick up Mark from school, so it must have been a fun and tiring day for her.  She still naps occassionally.

Here are the pictures from our first day!
