Aug. 4, 2006 - To Juice, or not to Juice?
Okay, I am new at this blog thing. I have been random blogging and don't see very many Dad's out there. Wives, encourage your husbands to start a blog. I know their busy, we all are. But men need other men to yak with also.
Anyway, that leads me to today's entry. One of the things I like about working in a factory (i like working in a factory???) is the discussions and mini-debates my friends and I have at the break-room table. Most of them start from an article in the local newspaper. Here is the latest.
Professional athletes using steroids. There were three of us involved in this discussion. Two of us (one being me) agreed that steroid use should remain illegal for all sports and athletes. The third fella however felt that they should be made legal. If an athlete wants to use them that is his choice. He is old enough to understand the side effects and abuse his body this way if he wants to. We asked him if 'roid' users would go in the record books or hall of fame because we felt that an athlete who achieves a record by his own merit and hard work deserves proper recognition but a 'roid' user does not. He had help breaking that record. His answer was yes, they should go in the record books with a note stating that performance enhancers were made legal in that sport at such and such a date in time. He also feels the same way about Nascar racing. No resrtictor plates. You should be able to make your car go as fast as you possibly can. I told him that I felt that he was just wanting to see athletes get hurt to up the entertainment value of his favorite sports.
I would like to know what you think on this topic. I know...there's nothing in here about homeschooling. You probably won't ever find much about HS here. Don't get me wrong. I love our homeschool. It is just that I choose to write about other things. Who knows, maybe some of you HS moms are big sports fans on the side.
Have a great day.

Whew! When I saw the title of this entry, I thought this was going to be about whether our children should drink Capri Sun juice (or something similiar) or not. Because I do use some of these convenience foods...well, we won't get into that.
I agree with you on the steroid use thing. If professional sports supports it, the kids who look up to these athletes will want to use them. Plus, allowing them doesn't just affect the one athlete, it affects the rest. If this particular athlete is always winning, the competitors would become inclined to do what they needed to win...thus one person's actions can really harm others.
Besides, if one can't make it on your own in a sport with what God gave them, then perhaps it's time to find discover what their God given talents are...instead of trying to be a fake.
Glad to see another hs'ing dad on HSB. I've been trying for months to get DH to blog...

I'm surprised to hear anyone promoting steriod use!? It sure does give a false impression of what the person/athlete can actually do.
Interesting situation we had around our house regarding performance enhancing drugs~ (I should have blogged about this at the time, now that I think about it!)
Anyhow, our family got really into watching the Tour de France. PM (that's my abbreviation for Preacher Man, my husband) was really rooting for Floyd Landis, as the rising American cyclist. We all joined in as a family to root this guy on, especially after hearing his story of leaving the Amish way of life to pursue this dream of cycling.
Well, on that day he made the big come back, we thought "What a great lesson!" Look how hard he worked, and the things Floyd said..."I was upset for about an hour, and then realized this isn't over and I'm not giving up. It might be hard, but I'm going to work hard at it."
Then he made that great comeback the next day.
PM and I talked about what hard work can do, and how we have to keep working hard at things sometimes.
Our kids heard all that. Then, several days later he tested positive for the testosterone use on that day.
I was pretty ticked. Not because of Floyd Landis, but because of his example to my kids....and our previous conversation about hard work.
So, all of that rambling to say.....throw the steroids out! Throw the guys that use them out of the sport too! It's just bad stuff.
On a different note~ it's nice to see a dad blogging. I have run across a few dads, but not too many. I've enjoyed what I have read on your blog so far, and your wife is truly a blessing when I read her blog!

You are right, there aren't many, but there are a few of us out there. Welcome!!!
I agree, but that is a symptom of our culture. Find the easy way, don't have to work too hard, and I deserve it seem to rule the day.

I agree with you in that steroids or any other enhancing drug should be illegal. If athletes should be allowed to use steroids or enhance their cars to as much as possible, why not allow corked bats or messing with the baseball so the hitter can't hit it. If it's good for the hitter, then the pitchers should be allowed to do whatever is possible to get an advantage as well. Soon enough we should have a machine to do the pitching and program it to pitch at the exact place we want it to pitch as we are trying anything possilbe to get an advantage.
It all just gets worse and worse. The commpetiition and comparison of who or which team is better can not be fairly made when some players used steroids while others did it through hard work and sweat.
