Oct. 11, 2007 - The Side Art of Blogging ~ Commenting

In my previouse post titled Blogging is an Art I told you I would write another post about the side art of blogging. As for the last post, I could go on forever, but right now lets talk about the side art, which is as I said, commenting.

The art of Blogging is not only learning to write good posts, but also learning to write great comments, and if you are a really accomplished blogger you will know how to use the HTML to make awesome templates and neat stuff like that, but for now we are talking about the comments.

One of the most importent things is responding to comments. I can not brag of being good at it, but here we go.

It is just proper etiquette to respond when someone says something to you.

The same with comments. Someone is saying something to you. You should let them know your listening.

An easy way to remember to respond to a comment is to go to your last post, and answer all the comments there. This is the method I have been using, however, it dosen't seem to work, but maybe it will for you.

Another way is if you get the e-mails notifing you that you have a comment, save them to remind you to respond. This is the method my sister Eyebright uses. It seems to work.

Now that you know to respond, it's time to learn how to write a comment.

One like the following will not do.

yo that was so like cool.

you shold check out my blog it is awsome lol lol

First of all, you should use no slang like yo. I personally think when people use the word yo it is rude, and disrespectful. Act civilized when writing a comment, that is what will draw people to your blog.

A good comment would contain more about what had been posted about, and more about the person that you are commenting to. Remember that the comment is not about you, and your blog, but about them, and their post.

Here are a few things I look for in a good comment.

Spelling is just like it would be in a post. Try to make the comment so that it is readable.

Don't feal bad about leaving a long comment. Just so it's not several web pages long, I enjoy long comments, and I think other people do, too. This dosen't mean you have to leave long comments all the time, short and sweet is nice too, but if you have something to say, don't feel bad about saying it.

If you are a Christian, act like one. The way you comment is a big way for other bloggers to decide if you are someone they would like to have on their friends list.

If the post you are commenting on is a big "thinker" post, let the writer know what you think, even if you don't agree with them, just put it in a nice way.

Last, but not least, remember that you could be making someone's day, who was wondering why she still has no comments on the post she thought was great!

A great post to read about commenting, and blogging is on totustuus's blog, please stop and read it.

Please think about this the next time you leave a comment.

Thank you all for reading, and please, leave a comment!

I love getting thoughtful comments!

Alizona taught me this trick for commenting: by going to the web address www.homeschoolblogger.com/sweetpotato/friends, (yours would be bluejane/friends) I can access all the newest posts my friends have made on one page. I always just go along and comment on each new post...or try too. I get behind at times. Anyway, that works for me, but it might not if a person's friend's lists was real, real long.

I really liked the topic you chose to blog on. I totally agree. Usually when I want someone to visit my blog I decide to read a few of their post first so that when I post my comment it's not all about me. I don't have many people who come to visit my blog because most of my friends aren't into blogging. They like the myspace type of thing or they just get on to e-mail and play games. So I do try to visit a lot of other bloggers to try to meet people to keep in touch with. I did visit a couple of people off of your friends list. I was wondering if I could post your post on my blog and put your webpage link with it because I was really interested in that particular post. I will be waiting for a response before I post it.

Great thoughts on the overall subject! You've made your point very clear for any blogger, and if they don't get the message they shouldn't be blogging. So maybe that's a little harsh but I think those people that blog sloppily find that even if they have readers when they start on such a dull note as "leve me a commnt", their readers will soon loose interest and they too will loose interest in their own blog.

I use the e-mail notification method to reply to comments. Not only am I able to reply to just about everyone that drops me short message, I get more e-mail that way. ;-D I find it exciting waiting to see what "1 our of 1 message" is going to be. ;-)

Anyway, great post. Keep up the good work!

I suppose it's not really blogging if you can't comment, too.

You had some good ideas there!

I try to answer comments right away. Sometimes I'm in a hurry and then I just leave a really short one. If I do write a short one I try to remember to go back and write a longer one later. I'll try and work on this.

I suppose I was going on a mini rant. ;-) I guess I was thinking along the lines of if someone comments lousy, they probably blog lousy as well. I know that's not always the case though.

God bless!

P.S. I liked getting an e-mail notification saying you left me a comment. ;-)
