Feb. 23, 2009 - Respect, As Kids We Need to Start Showing Some
Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.
Psalm 119: 117
---------------
Respect: To show consideration, or thoughtfulness in relation to somebody, or something.
---------------
Respect is something that has really been on my mind lately. Not only do I need to show some more, but I’ve noticed some things while out and about that has shown me the lack of respect in the world.
I’ve pretty much divided people into three groups that all need to be shown some respect. Even if it’s just the little things, those are the kind of things that catch my eye.
-----------------
Respect for Parents
Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
Ephesians 6:2
It is towards these people I have seen the most amount of disrespect. You are not only making things harder on yourself, but your making things hard for your parents when you show them no respect. It can be shown in many ways.
When told to do something, or told not to do something, don’t argue. By not accepting their choice, you are showing them they have none of your respect. They have made that choice for a reason, not just because they felt like it.
Body language is one of my biggest problems. A lot of the times when asked to do something I roll my eyes, stomp off, or act like it’s taking a huge amount of effort to accomplish the small task. You guessed it, major disrespect.
Not only can you show respect to your parents when your around them, you can also show them respect when you are at a friend’s house, at school, (for those who go) or any other time you’re not with them.
I know several people who seem to their parents to accept their authority, but when their parents aren’t around they can be a completely different person. Telling your friends that your Mom is stupid and your Dads a pain proves your disrespect for them. It shows your lack of honor.
-----------------
Respect for Elders
Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.
1 Timothy 15:17
It drives me crazy when I hear a 12 year old call his 40 year old acquaintance just plain John. To me, not calling your elders by their proper title is rude, and shows disrespect, unless asked, or told otherwise.
By saying Mr. Smith your are accepting his authority as an adult. This also goes for aunts and uncles. By saying Uncle John you are showing respect.
When told by adults to do something, unless you now it’s wrong and your parents have told you otherwise, do it. If Grandma says to wash your hands before dinner, you are showing your respect for her by doing it without comment, or complaint.
Another small way to show your respect is to move from your seat if an adult comes in the room and there are not other places for them to sit.
-----------------
Respect for Others
Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
1 Peter 2:17
Showing people around you that you respect them as a person, makes them feel a whole lot better about you. It also gives them a respect for you.
Here are some small things that are great ways to show respect to everyone.
Boys
1.Take your hats off when you enter a building.
2. Hold doors open for others.
Girls
1. Dress modestly.
2. Don’t throw yourself at boys.
Everyone
1. Say please, thank you, excuse me, no thank you, etc. etc.
2. Don’t interrupt when someone else is speaking.
3. Clean up your messes.
4. Keep your hands to yourself. Do not touch what is not yours.
By showing people respect, they will learn to respect you, as a daughter/son, as a child, and as a friend.
Respect does not end at your behavior around people though. It goes right into your heart and what you’re thinking. God knows if underneath you really can’t stand the girl who lives up the street. By doing and saying the right things, you have shown your outward respect, but don’t forget to visit your heart, and take a look at what’s inside there. It may be time for a major revamp.
God can help; all you have to do is ask.

Very nice post too! It was a good reminder to me. I really need to work on the one of respecting my parents. I love my mom and dad and I need to honor them as the Lord commands.

Amen! I get so frustrated with disrespectful people. I babysit for this family, and their two boys are horribly disrespectful. No one in the church likes these boys because of their horrid attitude.
Exactly, I think that if you are going to wear make up, people shouldn't be able to tell you have it on. :)
Blessings,

WOW! That was totally right! I dont think that you could put it more plainer!! As a christian homeschooler I can understand how bad we can all be at respect! Even respect to your siblings who can get on your nerve if you live with them ALL the time!!
