Aug. 21, 2009 - David Copperfield ~ Review

David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

David Copperfield (Barnes & Noble Classics)
Well known as Dickens own favorite, David Copperfield reaches a tiring 64 chapters.
Telling David Copperfield's life story, and a tragic one at that. David's Father dies before he is born, and when David is still young his Mother remarries to not the kindest of men. Eventually his Mother is worn down, and dies leaving David to be sent away.
The young boy however is not happy with his lot in life, and after he, once again looses people he loves, he starts out on a journey to find his Aunt. The Aunt who was present at his birth, but was disappointed by his gender and left, never to be seen since.
Upon seeing him the old woman's heart softens and she takes the small boy in, raising him properly.
David's sorrows do not end there however, he is still yet to bare several more deaths. Sadness is not all that prevails in his life though!

"It was such an early day that it came soon, even to me, who was in a fever of expectation, and half afraid that an earthquake or a fiery mountain, or some other great convulsion of nature, might interpose to stop the expedition." ~ David Copperfield

I myself did not enjoy this story. Every time I picked up to read I set it down again in a depressed mood. I think it was rather long and drawn out, and while there was no point where it was really actually boring, it was not the most exciting of books and it was easy for my mind to wander. I also thought it was rather predictable, only a few times was a surprised by an unexpected turn of events.

However I was pleased with the cast of characters found in this story. The infamous Uriah Heep, the ever so loved Little Em'ly, and Traddles, David's friend from his school days. I'd have to say my favorite was Miss Mowcher!

~~~~~~~~~~
"'If either of you saw my ankles,' she said, when she was safely elevated, 'say so, and I'll go home and destroy myself.'
'I did not,' said Steerforth.
'I did not,' said I.
'Well then,' cried Miss Mowcher, 'I'll consent to live. Now, ducky, ducky, ducky, come to Mrs. Bond and be killed!'" ~ David Copperfield
I have been told however that this is not Charles Dickens most gripping story and to try Great Expectations, or Bleak House. I do plan to, but only after a rather lengthy break.
Do you enjoy Charles Dickens?
Yes, a lengthy break would be a good idea. I read Oliver Twist, it took awhile. I started reading David Copperfield but quickly decided it wasnt good for my soul to be always 'down in the dumps' Maybe you will be able to find a good one though....maybe :D
Haha, yeah, depressing books really aren't my thing, either. ;)
I've listened to the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre version of A Christmas Carol, but that's about as far as my experience with his books goes. Although I think I might be reading some of his books for school either this year or next.
