I received an email from a friend today, that contained a link to this CNN article. Upon reading the article, I had thought about the fact that as we did some shopping yesterday, I noticed that most stores weren't decorated for any holiday, but had gone with the non descript snow flakes, snowmen, etc, themes. There were no banners saying Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, etc. Aside from my other feelings about Christmas, I was reminded of how I used to love going into stores decorated to the nines. A nostalgic feeling, I suppose.
When I read this article, I realized that there is so much more going on here. Firstly, the Rabbi wanted a Menorah displayed in the airport. Instead of bringing it to the attention of the airport and allowing them to make a decision about the issue, he pushed and was ready (as all Americans are now a days) to counter with a lawsuit. See, now when someone doesn't do what you say, you hire an attorney. No one has the right to not do as you say and uphold your beliefs. If they don't conform, they are threatened with a legal actions, which equates to money.
Secondly, why couldn't the Rabbi, using God's principals, express his view and allow the airport time to make a decision. Would he have accepted an answer such as, "Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We hadn't even thought of it. We are unable to add a Menorah this year, but will add it to our agenda to make a budgetary allowance for next year." Clearly, the fact that they didn't respond immediately with placing a Menorah on display which had him running for his attorney, is an indication that he might not have viewed this as acceptable.
However, the final blow is that when the airport was pressured so hard so quickly, they took the path of least resistance...they took down the Christmas trees. The article states that the trees were taken down at the least travelled time, so as not to be noticed. Yet I wonder, if someone had complained about this, would the trees go back up? We now have one more place that is "respectfully" eliminating Christmas, because of offending others.
I wonder if the Rabbi is aware that Christmas is a Federal holiday to honor the birth of Christ? Hannukah is a religious holiday, not a federal holiday. Masses of Hebrews were not here establishing our country. They were not fighting on the front lines for freedom, here. Yet, now that they have come to live here, we must conform to them. I wonder if his views would be the same if a group of Christians went to live in Israel and tried forcing the country to respect and honor Christianity.
These are my thoughts.
Dec. 11, 2006 - I agree but disagree..
When I read this I thought the Rabbi should have given the Airport more time ..running such a large air port is like running any large business you can turn on a dime and change things over night..
Your right we have become a nation of "lawsuit" and its a shame..
Its sad really.. and I'm a very open minded person but this did take me back a bit
But on the other hand.. This country was settled for folks "like" Jewish folks and anyone else that could not worship in their own way.. and have that freedom ..
I can assure you that there have been plenty of Jewish folk who have spilled their blood to keep this right alive..
The men and women who settled in this country for the most part where Christian folks.. but this country was never meant to be a "Christian Nation"
These good men and women knew what it was like when you mixed religion and goverment.. you end up w/ dead people.. Christians against Christians.. Christians against Jews.. you get the picture..
Even Thomas Jefferson wasn't a "Christian" in the sense.. He didn't agree w/ how the Bible was written,so much so that he re wrote it..Called, you guess it The Jefferson Bible.. don't believe me Google it :)
That's why the gov't was set up the way it was.. to keep state and church apart.. To protect folks rights to believe in what they will..
And to honest I REALLY don't want the Gov't in my church or religion ... The Gov't has taken over so much now days .. next thing you know they will be telling us who to worship and when..where and ? You get the picture..
My faith is between me and God..not me God and the Goverment..
And if you read you history when the Purtians got here? They made laws against celebrating Christimas!! Yes, in the start of this country Christmas was against the law!!.. Again you can "Google" it and see for yourself..
I'm leaving my e-mail addy because I'm signed in under Anonymous.. I don't have a blog here on this web site..
I have enjoy your blog since running across it a few weeks ago..
I hope we can agree to disagree.. and I honor your right to speak you mind..
Peace and Godbless

Did you hear about the apartment complex in Florida that made the residents take down their Christmas decorations because they "damaged the buildings". After the news investigated and did a story the owners changed their minds and let the residents put them back up as long as they didn't drive nails into the buildings. Hey thanks for the heads up about Happy Feet. We haven't seen it yet. Alot of those types of movies are a disguise for agendas, PETA or whoever! I don't really do agendas, so I will prescreen and decide if it is a movie for us.
Dec. 22, 2006 - Ya know -
I've noticed that in the south - EVERYBODY says Merry Christmas - at least where we are! That is something to be thankful for.
