That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” mused Juliet in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It’s evident that Juliet was not Hebrew. For the people of ancient Israel felt that the meaning behind a person’s name was vitally important. Parents carefully chose a name based on the personality, characteristics, or character that they saw in their child, or what they hoped would be true of their son or daughter.
When Jesus first called Simon to be His disciple, the fisherman was known for his rash and reckless ways—a shifting-sand kind of person. Later, Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, which means rock. It took a while, however, for Peter to live up to his new name. We read in a subsequent account (Matthew 26) that Peter failed Jesus by denying Him three times. Prior to that failure was another sad episode in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the garden, Jesus’ soul was “crushed with grief to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38). Three times He got up to seek out His disciples. Each time He found them sleeping. “He said to Peter, ‘Couldn’t you watch with Me even one hour?’ ” (v.40). At the close of the gospel of John, we find Peter returning to his old trade of fishing, perhaps due to disappointment with himself (John 21). But the story doesn’t end there. Jesus came to reinstate Peter. In essence, Jesus helped Peter understand that God had not given up on him and that God still wanted to use him. If you, like Peter, have received Jesus as your Savior, you now are identified with the name of Christ. You are a Christian. This title lifts up who you are and calls you to become what you are not yet. Be encouraged. God isn’t done with you yet. —Poh Fang Chia, Our Daily Journey Serenity PrayerPosted on: Friday, October 2, 2009 with (1) Comments | Post a Comment!

So TruePosted on: Tuesday, August 4, 2009 with (0) Comments | Post a Comment! A modern parable, this insightful video illustration examines the life of a man searching through the false promises of other religions and finding his salvation in Christ. Have you ever found yourself stuck in a situation that you couldn't get out of? And not only that, but you didn't know how to get out of. When you need help, where do you turn? How do you get out? The culture believes that there are many paths in life we can take, but this video illustration demonstrates that none of them will ultimately help you out of your situation. This reminds me of the famous story about CS Lewis where he proclaimed the most distinguish ing fact of Christianity. Here is a direct quote from Philip Yancey, What's So Amazing About Grace? (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan Publishing House, 1997), p 45. During a British conference on comparative religions, experts from around the world debated what, if any, belief was unique to the Christian faith. They began eliminating possibilities. Incarnation? Other religions had different versions of gods' appearing in human form. Resurrection? Again, other religions had accounts of return from death. The debate went on for some time until CS Lewis wandered into the room. "What's the rumpus about?" he asked, and heard in reply that his colleagues were discussing Christianity's unique contribution among world religions. Lewis responded, "Oh, that's easy. It's grace." Grace makes Christianity unique from all other religions because it marks the stark difference in believing in a God that will come down into a hole and pull you out of your mess, verses a God that requires you to earn its approval. When we search for God, the Bible promises that we will find Him. The difference between Christianity and other religions can be explained by the words "Do" and "Done." Do All other world religions have to do with good works or good deeds. Reincarnation and Karma are major themes in world religions and they always point back to what you do with your life. Done Christianity points to what Jesus Christ has already done on the cross at Calvary. His sacrifice on the cross is what brings a Christian salvation. Jesus Christ is the only way to God who comes down to meet us in our own messy lives, to build relationship with us and to save us from this life. We are free because of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It's not our own righteousness that leads to salvation, but the free gift of grace. BlueFish TV Richardson, TX Has anyone seen this before? I was the only one who was thinking EARLY! So Mum grabbed us a quick dinner of carrots, chips & cheese sticks- And we ate on the way~ It turned out alright! I was giving out extra crackers because we were All a little tired~ But we had a Great time! And afterward I got downstairs just in time to have some Nachos & a cold drink! Be careful what you say Careless words can hurt people. Not only can they influence a person's self-worth, they can actually shape that person's destiny. if you doubt that, consider these two stories:
(1) One day in a small country church an alter boy accidentally dropped the communion wine. The officiating priest slapped him and shouted,"Leave & don't come back!" That boy became General Tito, the brutal communist dictator who ruled the people of Yugoslavia for years. (2) Ina big city cathedral another alter boy dropped the communion wine. His bishop turned to him and whispered reassuringly," It's okay, some day you'll be a great priest." That boy became Archbishop Fulton Sheen, Whose sermons touched the hearts of millions on national television. Your words either build people up or tear them down. Solomon said,"Reckless words piece like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."
Here's a truth we don't like to acknowledge; what comes out of our lips reveals what' in our heart, and all our "I didn't mean it"s don't change that or undo the damage.
Eugene Peterson writes: "Every day I put love on the line. There's nothing I am less good at. I am far better in competition than love; far better at responding to my instincts to get ahead, than figuring out how to love one another. I'm schooled and trained in getting my own way. And yet I decide to every day to set aside what I do best, and attempt to do what I do very clumsily- open myself to frustrations and failures of loving, daring to believe that failing in love is better than succeeding in pride."

Dear Chi Alpha Prayer Team,Posted on: Tuesday, June 9, 2009 with (0) Comments | Post a Comment! I would ask you to keep a couple of things in prayer this week: - First, as students finish up finals, many will be moving to new situations for the summer. For many, this shift will actually be to familiar situations back home. Summer provides great opportunities (for rest, ministry to non-Christian families, outreach to old friends, etc.), but also certain dangers (temptation to fall back into old patterns, loneliness, lack of any spiritual disciplines, not being connected to a body of believers, etc.). Here, I would ask you to pray for our students over the summer months; that God would work through them, that God would protect them, and that God would prepare them for ministry on campus again next year.
-Second, summer is also the time for our staff to evaluate ministry, to plan for the new year and to shore up support. Pray for this vital time as our staff rejuvenates and prepares for ministry next year. Pray especially for good, clear evaluations of last year and strong, inspired planning for next year.
We are thankful for your continued faithfulness to our work among students and are thankful for another good year of ministry.
God bless you for your friendship and partnership!

Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible. Psalm 119 is the longest. Psalm 118 is the center of the Bible. There are 594 ch. in the Bible before Psalm 118, and there are 594 ch. after Psalm 118- 1,188 chapters.
This number can be split 118-8, or Psalm 118:8. Now we know that the chapter divisions in the Bible are not part of the original Scripture, but isn't it interesting how this little word-exercise worked out? Or was God in the center of it all? And if He was, shouldn't the central verse Of the Bible contain its central theme? It does: "It is better to trust in the Lord then to put confidence in man." In Psalm 118 the Psalmist recalls seven reasons why God is worthy to be trusted: (a) "I called upon the Lord in my distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place" (v5). (b)"The Lord is on my side;I will not fear: what can man do to me? (v6). (c) "The Lord taketh my part with them that helped me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me" (v7). (d) "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord" (v17). (e) "The Lord hath chastened me sore: but He hath not given me over unto death" (v18). (f) " This is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" (v24) (g) "Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever" (v29 NKJV).

-The Word For You Today- (Daily Devotional)!Posted on: Tuesday, June 2, 2009 with (1) Comments | Post a Comment! Are you in a storm today? Then read these words : "The boat was in the middle of the seas;and He was on the land. Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by. And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out.... But immediately He talked with them and said to them...'It is I;do not be afraid.' Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased" (Mark 6:47-51) There are four lessons here for us: (1) It's when we feel most separated from God, that He's teaching us the most. Dave Dravecky said,"Looking back...I have learned that the wilderness is part of the landscape of faith, and every bit as essential as the mountaintop. On the mountaintop we are overwhelmed by God's presence. In the wilderness we are overwhelmed by His absence. Both places should bring us to our knees; the one in awe; the other, in dependence." (2) God doesn't show up early. Usually He comes in the worst part of the storm when you think you can't take any more- but He will always be on time. (3) God takes us through different storms, revealing more of Himself to us in each one. Otherwise there are aspects of His character, and divine strategies we'd never understand. (4) God's presence alone should be enough for us in any storm. The moment He shows up and says,"It is I," should calm our every fear.
