How to order a costume

Interested in ordering a Costume from Brielle’s Wardrobe?

Thank you for visiting my website…. Are you interested in a custom made costume? I’d love to make you one….please read the following to find out how and to also familiarize yourself with the process of making a custom ordered costume.

If you are interested in a costume price estimate and you are under the age of 15, you must have a parent send an e-mail to me with permission to correspond about a price estimate or costume order. Please note that I will be happy to talk about costumes and prices with you, but I must have your parent’s permission that it is alright if you are considering ordering a costume. Thank you for understanding.

On all costume orders I will need at least 6 to 8 weeks after receiving payment

Notes about Measurements:

Measurements are the first requirement  before you get a price estimate. Without the measurements there is no way to know whether or not that style of costume will work for you or if I have fabric available for that size. So measurements are a must for any price estimate or costume order. Please remember when measuring to make your measurements accurate. As tempting as it may seem to make your measurements a little smaller or bigger please do not do this. In order for your costume to fit properly and look nice, your measurements must be correct.

Click Here for an example of the measurement form….

 Movie Inspired Costumes:

A movie inspired costume is fun and makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another realm…. Here are a few things to remember when choosing a movie inspired costume.

1. You will not look like the actor or actress. You will look like you in a costume from the movie. You will look great, but try and pick a costume that is suitable to your figure and size.

2. The costume designer in a movie has a very larger budget, so if you want a movie inspired costume just like the original it will probably be impossible.

3. Certain elements of movie costums such as leather work and metal accessories are expensive and hard to recreate, but on some costumes I am able to find or make accessories that look similar to the original.

So I prefer to call these costumes “Movie Inspired”…because they are costumes that were inspired by the original movie costume. Many of the elements and designs will be close to the original ,but it would be next to impossible to obtain the exact same fabrics as the movie version…thus they are movie inspired costumes made with similar fabrics and accessories.

Historical Costumes:

A historical costume is a garment inspired by a certain time period or year.

With historical costumes you have two options……

Historically Accurate: This means that the costume is historically accurate. So for example the fabrics have been carefully researched, the seam placement and styles of stitching have been done in the style of the time period you choose. Buttons have been chosen with special attention to detail and trims and decorations have been made to look authentic to the period. This type is generally very costly to re-create.

Historically Inspired:  This means that the costume was inspired by historical styles. The fabrics in this style of costume will look like something from that time period, but may be a newer type of fabric. Zippers might be used for fasteners and fancy eyelets and historical laces might be eliminated. These costumes are generally less expensive and still look like a historical costume, but are not historically accurate in every detail.

Making the costume:

The process of making a custom ordered costume takes time and planning.

If you are ordering a movie inspired costume, the original costume will be carefully observed.  Sketches and photos will be done to make sure that the version you order is  similar to the original.

Fabrics and trims must be selected and any other notions that the costume might require will also need to be purchased. After all supplies are gathered, muslins (or test garments) are made to ensure that the pattern will work for your measurements before the nice fabric is cut. This allows for making much easier adjustments before sewing.

As soon as all adjustments are done the sewing can begin. Many costumes require hand sewing trims and other decorations to the costume. Other designs require hand embroidery, beadwork or appliqués. All of the handwork is included in the costume price.

For some costume styles the fabrics will also need to be dyed a different color to obtain the desired results. If you are looking for a costume that needs to look worn and aged, fabric dye is how that look is achieved.

Once the sewing is completed final measurements are re-checked, hems are inspected and any hand sewing is reinforced.

The costume is pressed for the last time and carefully packaged to insure a safe delivery.

Please note that if you are ordering a ball gown or fancy dress, I do offer custom made garment bags to ensure that your costume stays nice while hanging in your closet.

 Washing Custom Costumes:

Your new costume comes with instructions for washing and ironing.

Many costumes are hand wash only or cold wash and hang to dry.
