The Stepsisters Costumes
Joy’s and Portia’s costumes were very fun to create. Each sister had her own style and design to the costume.

On Joy’s I used lots of oranges, yellows, coppers and rust colored fabrics. Some of them were silk remnants, while other fabrics were cottons and linen blends. Many of the laces and trims on her bodice were orange or white accented with gold. Around the edge of her bodice was petal like shapes of metallic fabric that were decorated with gold coin like embellishments at the ends of the petals.

With Portia’s costume I wanted to use colors that didn’t really match at all, but still looked like she thought the colors went together… So her color scheme was white, bright green, gold and royal purple…and lots of bows.

The hats and the bustle were very fun to make because of all the little extra things that went onto them to give the girls a very stepsister worthy look. I had not worked with the large feathers before on a costume item and it was fun to see how the hats came together.

For the morning after the ball, each stepsister had a morning gown that match their signature colors and of course were accented with lots of lace and frivolous embellishments.

Oh, yes each stepsister also wore bloomers that matched their costumes… so Joy’s are yellow and orange and Portia’s are purple, white and green.
Their jewelry consisted of earrings, lots of necklaces, rings and large beaded necklaces. They both wore snoods that match the costumes and that way their hair fit nicely under the hats.
