Home-School TV Ad Encourages Parents to Keep Kids Home from staff reports
Effort is aimed at countering mandatory preschool. As the debate continues over whether to make preschool mandatory, a home-school advocacy group is running a TV spot on the impact such a policy would have on children. Charles Lowers, executive director of Considering Homeschooling, said it's important for young children to be at home. "It really breaks that bond that God created between mother and father and child," he said, "and institutionalizes those children and causes all kinds of development problems." Lowers said preschool promotes inconsistent discipline and exposes kids to peer influences. So his group launched a campaign to raise awareness. "Institutionalized preschool cannot replace the relationship between mother and father and child," he told Family News in Focus. While many parents think the sooner they put their kids in school the better, Michael Smith, president of Home School Legal Defense Association, disagrees. "There is an attempt and a trend across the country in legislatures to lower the compulsory attendance ages," he said. "The argument is it's better for children. We think it's just the opposite." There's an effort in many states to mandate children to be in school as early as three years old. "Little children need to be with their parents at these early ages," Smith said. "They need to be protected, they need to be educated and taught and trained and all the things that parents do that no one else can do."
