How Did You...

...find out about homeschooling?

We found out when we met the Gregg and Sono Harris family. They used to live in Dayton, Ohio and they led me to the Lord, introduced me the that handsome man in the pic who would later become my husband and told us that they homeschool their son. Yep...the cute little kid in the pic is Josh "I Kissed Dating Good-bye" Harris when he was about 8 years old! He was my little buddy and the 1st homeschooled kid I'd ever met.

The first time I heard about homeschooling was when I had finished the fourth grade. I had met a new girl to our church, along with her family, the Smays. It was a rather large family (7 kids...later eight) that had just moved here from California. I wasn't accustomed to seeing so many kids in one family! I thought it was pretty neat to see...especially since they all got along so well for a bunch of siblings. I went to their house one day, with their eldest daughter who was my age. She showed my twin and I around the house, in particular their 'schoolroom'. I was in awe. A classroom in someone's house! I had never heard of such a thing! They had school desks, a blackboard, a map on the wall, school books, etc. It was so neat. I asked her what grade she was in and she said she was going into sixth grade because she had finished two grades that year! Yep, I was jealous to say the least. ha ha! I think I was more jealous that she got to have school with in her own home and that her mom WANTED to school her! But that all stuck with me. In high school, a lot of things were happening. I didn't care for my high school much..except for sports and going to football games with my friends. I asked to attend a local Christian school, but we couldn't afford it. So, I asked my mom if she'd want to homeschool me. Her answer was a resounding NO. Honestly, I didn't understand why a parent wouldn't want to homeschool their child if they were unhappy where they were at and bored with the school they were in. When I had my oldest daughter, I always thought about homeschooling. I homeschooled her for preschool, kindergarten and first grade and then ended up putting her into public, along with her younger sisters. I regret that to this day. However, I now have them at home and am enjoying homeschooling all of my girls.

We were going to Troy Grace Brethren Church at the time...where I attended until my junior year of high school and then switched to Community Grace Brethren until I left for college. I have pics of Julia's wedding too. I miss her...haven't seen her in AGES!
