Notions of a Texas Ranch Girl

Jul. 24, 2006

What I miss about Texas, and love about Alaska

Things I miss about Texas:

1.   Swimming in the summertime

2.   Thanksgiving in Texas

3.   Spectacular electrical thunderstorms

4.   Lying out under the stars

5.   Family get-togethers

6 .  Sunshine

7.   Cowboys, western influence, ranches and rodeos

8.  Wide-open spaces and  road-trips

9.  Wal-mart and H.E.B.

10.  Having acreage to live on

11.  Home-grown tomatoes

12.  Sisters/brothers within walking distance, cousins for my boys to play with

13.  Windmills and bluebonnets

14.  Texans

15.  Texas sunsets

Things I love about Juneau, Alaska:

1.   Green mountains, snow-capped mountains, mountains w/glaciers, and more mountains.

2.   The sea - tide-pools, sandy beaches, rocky beaches, tides, wetlands

3.   Well-maintained, easily accessible trails smack dab in wilderness

4.  Clouds that just hang out below the mountains, and all the interesting formations

5.  Wildlife - porcupines, bears, beavers, squirrels, porpoises, whales, hoary marmots, birds, ducks, swans, bald eagles

6.  Snow in winter

7.  Activities - biking, hiking, fishing, boating, kayaking, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, sledding, berry-picking, panning for gold, & the list goes on

8.  Cool summers

9.  Wildflowers, gardens, ferns, green grass galore

10.  Friendly and outdoorsy, down to earth Alaskans

11.  The dresscode - jeans or carharts, xtra-tuffs (rubber boots) go anywhere

12.  Our church - the most loving, grace-centered, Bible-believing group I've ever had the privilege to know

13.  Fresh cool air; city water that tastes like it came from a stream; & smoked salmon

14.  Homeschool families galore, and the excellent benefits of homeschool correspondence schools

15.  Breath-taking views

I can so relate. We traded Kauai for Oregon. Things to miss, but oh so many new adventures. We have a wildfire in our midst, something we never delt with in Hawaii and they just missed a hit from hurricane Daniel. It sounds like you would be conent wherever you landed. Loved your post!

I think I am like you in the sense I left one distinct place for another. I love it here and it is my Home now and that is Real Good. I do know how beautiful Alaska is because by Aunt, Uncle, and cousins live in Alaska. I remember taking a road trip upto Anchor Point , Alaska when I was 12 and it was GREAT . We then took the Alaskan Ferry Home. I have such good memories from that trip. I just might do the 10 favorit things list for where I am from and where I am now. What a good idea. (0:

We left California for Texas about a year ago. A lot of things are different, although not as different as here and AK! I loved the pictures, we would love to live in Alaska some day. How did you end up there?

how blessed you are to have lived in two so spectacular places. you can see the lack of humidity in alaska just through your picture and the overabundance of it in texas. wow. my hubbie and i both love colorado. we went sking a lot when we didn't have kids. little did i know the last time we went i was pregnant with our third child. i couldn't have been but a week or so pregnant. it's still cool to think about that. i love your alaskan photos. keep them coming.
